99.5 Jetta TDI I have had since fall of 2011. Decided to lease a new car.
Here is some positive things:
Runs and starts good,(40 to 50mpg) even at 10 below zero. Although usually put heat light under Pan when very cold.
No rust starting. Has a tough rubber under coat.
Interior leather looks good. no worn through or cracked spots. floormat worn at gas pedal.
Engine was Replaced with 2001, with 65K less miles. Engine now has 180,000mi.
At that time, new VR6 heavy duty clutch replacement.  now has about 65K on it. Ready for larger injectors and ECU tune.60mpg?
New headlights.
Also radiator replaced.
Since I got car:
New turbocharger at 195K. Borge-Warner, has a little higher compression than original Garret.
Replaced A/C compressor
Front wheel bearings, Struts, Ball joints
new Windshield
new Radio, cd player
Brakes and Rotors on all four.
5K miles on Hankook Optimo tire
Mounted special crankcase filter between valve cover breather and intake. Keeps oil from mixing with carbon, plugging intake manifold.

Things that may need attention:
Major dents cracks and dings are pictured. paint is fair condition
Inside cloth on cover of moon roof came off. ceiling cloth beginning to release at rear window.
Rear view mirrors discolored or broken but good enough to use.
Black air dam under front bumper was taken off.
Crack in bottom of left front bumper ,also some dings. rear bumper deeds paint.
Dent behind left rear door (backed into my mailbox) and some dings other places.
CEL is on, maybe glow plugs.
ABS light on because it is disconnected
Sometimes while coasting to stop, when clutch is in, engine seems to shudder or miss fire a little, but evens out again when stopped?
Rear defrost out.
The usual right side hinge of glovebox broken, still closes OK.

Volkswagen drops "GTi" lawsuit against Suzuki

Tue, 02 Oct 2012

Way back in 2004, Volkswagen took umbrage with Suzuki being granted permission to use the nameplate "SWIFT GTi" for a performance variant of its small-car offering (2012 equivalent seen here). Now, eight years and surely some very steep legal bills later, VW has finally dropped its claim against Suzuki.
The General Court of the European Union stated, back in March of this year, that Suzuki's GTi registration could not be confused with VW's "Golf GTI." Volkswagen had appealed that ruling, though has now reportedly called off the dogs. In fact, Germany's Die Welt reports that the appeal has been dead for several weeks now.
This news comes amongst continued arbitration acrimony between the two automakers, all revolving around VW's forced divestiture of nearly 20-percent stake it purchased in Suzuki some two years ago.

BMW, Ferrari, VW cars use tungsten mined by terrorists

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

Bloomberg Markets is reporting that BMW, Volkswagen and Ferrari have been using tungsten ore sourced from Columbia's FARC rebel terrorists. The extensive story focuses on Columbia's illegal mining trade and calls into question the provenance of the rare ore that is used not only in crankshaft parts production, but is also found in the world's computing and telecommunications industry for use in screens.
The ore is mined by the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People's Army), and exported to Pennsylvania, where it is refined. The refined ore is then sent over to Austria, where a company called Plansee turns it into a finished product. Now, it's important to note that we aren't talking about the world's supply of tungsten here. In 2012, Plansee's American refinery purchased 93.2 metric tons of tungsten, valued at $1.8 million. That's peanuts, with the entire Colombian tungsten mining industry producing just one percent of the world's supplies.
That doesn't make indirectly supporting FARC any more acceptable, though. BMW, VW and Ferrari are all committed to not accepting mineral supplies from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is also in the grips of a guerrilla insurrection funded, in part, by illegal mining. The same commitment would figure to extend to Colombian mining, but as BMW points out, it's difficult for a multi-national manufacturer to know where every item in its supply chain comes from. A company spokesperson says as much, telling Bloomberg, "These few grams out of the billions of tons of raw materials passing through the BMW supply chain are of no practical relevance."

Last VW bus ever made arrives at final destination

Fri, 31 Jan 2014

A Brazilian politician tried to save it, unsuccessfully, so the final Last Edition Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi was produced on December 20, 2013 and now resides in a vintage museum at Volkswagen's Commercial Vehicles HQ in Hanover, Germany.
The Volkswagen Microbus was built for 56 years, starting in September 1957. Brazil was the last country still assembling it, but new safety regulations in the country requiring airbags and ABS on all cars spelled the end. When that politician introduced a bill that would pardon only the 'Bus from a death sentence, it couldn't garner the required number of votes for passage. The South American country takes the Kombi production title, though, with 1.5 million of the 3.5 million total made in the home of Copacabana beach and the girl from Ipanema.
The VW Bus is dead. Now perhaps we can turn our attentions to the still-not-totally-settled matter of the Bulli...
