1965 Volkswagen Single Cab - Custom Shorty

This is absolutely the finest VW Single Cab custom shorty in existence!!!

It was built by a VW-only restoration shop in Southern California.  No expense was spared during its 8-month rotisserie restoration.  Every single nut, bolt, and part is new...I mean absolutely everything.  And, the parts are not swap meet Chinese junk.  Only the highest quality parts that money could buy were used to build this shorty.

This shorty is 100% rust-free, and the paint and body are incredible.  I will let the pictures prove it.  The PPG paint was sprayed in original colors from a 1957 Chevy...tropical turquoise and India ivory.  It has less than 800 miles on the odometer.  I had this shorty built for my wife (my other shorty) to drive while we are visiting our second home on Maui.  She just doesn't enjoy driving old vehicles as much as I do.  I already have a 23-window Samba, so this single cab shorty is getting sold to a lucky new owner.

Besides owning it as your personal ride, this shorty would make an incredible investment as an advertising vehicle for any company.  We cannot drive this thing anywhere on the island without getting more attention than we sometimes even like.  Make sure to add an extra 20 minutes to every trip to the beach (or supermarket) to allow time for random picture takers and VW conversations!

Here is a non-inclusive list of high-end parts:

Front Safari windows - stainless steel (from Wolfgang International)

Rear Safari window - stainless steel (from Wolfgang International)

Complete chrome door window frames (chrome-plated at California Plating in San Diego, CA)

Polished deluxe trim on beltline, drop gates, and bumpers with black rubber inserts (from Aircooled Accessories in UK)

Front disc brakes (conversion from VW bay window bus so parts are readily available)

Gene Berg performance shifter with reverse lock-out (added feature as a theft-deterrent)

LED headlights (from Truck-Lite)

LED custom tail lights (fabricated to fit inside OEM housings)

Vintage Speed exhaust

Blaze-Cut fire suppression system

Viper alarm with custom sensors and remote notification

Ultima Red Top battery

European bumpers (powdercoated RAL9016 traffic white)

15" VW original crowsfeet rims with all hubcap clips (powdercoated RAL9016 traffic white)

Good-Year Custom Super Cushion 2-3/4" whitewalls (205/75R15)

German-quality VW stainless steel hubcaps

Custom 17" wood steering wheel

Custom 2-tone brown interior with white piping and hidden pleats

Chrome door pull handles

Chrome interior grab handle

Chrome radio block off plate (not shown in pictures)

Chrome drink holder (not shown in pictures)

All new rubber and glass throughout entire vehicle

Gerson metal (green metal) used for all rust repairs, including doglegs, pickup bed and custom drop gates

The list literally goes on and on and on....

Every single part on this vehicle is brand new, from engine lid hinges to wiring harness to complete brake system to mirrors and everything in between.  Also, the entire frame, undercarriage, wheel wells, inside and bottom of doors, etc. was coated with POR15.  I had anticipated it would spend its life on Maui, so every precaution was taken to prevent rust from ever forming on this beauty.  Wherever you live, rest assured this shorty will remain in pristine condition despite the weather (or salt on the roads).

Please feel free to email me or call me with any questions.  (808)856-1468.  The vehicle is located on Maui, but it has a clear CA title and it is registered in CA until August 2014.  No warranties of any kind.  Buyer is responsible for all shipping charges and liabilities, but I will gladly assist in helping with the shipping process.  For example, I will deliver it to the port of Kahului in Maui free of charge.  To help gauge your expenses, I know that shipping charges from Kahului, HI to Long Beach, CA via Matson Ocean Services is approximately $1,100.

This vehicle is for sale locally, and I reserve the right to end the auction at anytime.  If my reserve price is met during the auction, however, I will agree to let the auction run its course with this shorty going to the winning bidder.

Please ask any questions and have your funds secured before placing a bid.  I am an honest seller, and simply want a smooth transaction.  As a California attorney, I have ways to complicate your life, so please do not complicate mine.  Also, if you have a feedback score of less than 10, you must contact me before placing your bid.  Otherwise, I reserve the right to cancel your bid.

Lastly, if you have serious interest in this vehicle, feel free to call me to end the auction.  (808)856-1468.

Good Luck and God Bless!!!

I forgot to mention that the engine (1600cc single port), transmission, and gear reduction boxes were all completely disassembled and rebuilt using only new parts.  The entire vehicle is brand new, and can be driven anywhere...and you can only imagine the U-turn capabilities of this thing!  Also, when you consider the incredibly bright LED headlights and LED tail lights, and the front disc brakes, this shorty was made to drive anywhere at anytime, and as safely as possible.

VW to relax ambitious US sales targets?

Fri, 16 May 2014

The Volkswagen brand sold 407,704 cars last year, a 6.95-percent decline compared to 2012, and it's down a further 8.36 percent through the end of April 2014 compared to this time last year. In order to to put the sales football between its Strategy 2018 goal posts, the brand would need to add 100,000 more sales every year to achieve the lofty 800,000-unit target. Coming to grips with how unreasonable that is, VW US CEO Michael Horn has said, "For now, we have to have realistic targets."
The reasons for the brand's slow-down are imprecise, but lots of folks are throwing lots of reasons around. Last November, VW Group Chairman Ferdinand Piech told Bloomberg, "We understand Europe, we understand China and we understand Brazil, [but] we only understand the US to a certain degree so far." Analysts say the brand hasn't had midsize and compact SUV offerings, especially an overdue retail version of the CrossBlue, and the ones it does have are priced too high for their segments. It "didn't introduce enough new engines, or alternative technologies or model variants" for the Passat and Jetta. It devoted so many resources to China that the US market suffered. It was being outspent two-to-one on advertising by competitors. Its J.D. Power dependability ratings aren't high enough to overcome its past. It "has never really taken the US customer seriously." And so on.
There's still no official admission of defeat concerning the target, but reading between the lines there are some VW execs that appear to accept it won't happen short of some deus ex machina. Still,

North American production of foreign marques to jump in 2014

Sun, 23 Dec 2012

Wards Auto has released its North American Light Vehicle Production Forecast for 2014, and the report predicts foreign manufacturers will increase production on the continent some 3.9 percent by 2014. If accurate, that should see 123,000 additional cars, trucks and vans produced in North America, swelling the total number of units produced both by domestic and foreign manufacturers to 16.9 million light vehicles from a projected 15.6 million in 2013. Much of the increase can be attributed to the fact that Toyota intends to produce another car at its Blue Springs, MS plant as well as a new Lexus model at its Georgetown, KY facility in a year's time.
Likewise, Volkswagen intends to move production of a currently imported model to its plant in Puebla, Mexico. Daimler, Honda, Nissan and Mazda also plan to build additional models on North American soil for the first time. Around two-thirds of the new North American manufacturing will take place in Mexico, helping the country soak up a full 20 percent of the content's automotive production for the first time. You can head over to the Wards Auto site for the full report.

Volkswagen iBeetle gets integrated iPhone dock, little else

Fri, 19 Apr 2013

Apple fans have been itching to see the tech giant flex the full muscle of its iOS operating system in an automotive infotainment system for years, which is why we turned all sorts of excited when we caught wind of the Volkswagen iBeetle. The machine is headed to the Shanghai Motor Show for a debut, and VW promised it would be one of the "first cars in the world to have a genuine integrative interface for the iPhone that was coordinated with Apple." Listen closely, and you can hear the contented sigh of a million wallets opening.
Go ahead and close those up, kids.
In reality, the iBeetle offers little more than a dash-mounted dock and a special app that shows a few vehicle functions, which is about as far from an infotainment revolution as you're likely to find. In fact, the setup is little more than a factory rehash of aftermarket items, and hardly worth a whole model debut at an international motor show. And that's to say nothing of the fact that Apple relishes in changing the shape and form of its darling handheld at every generation. Volkswagen better be prepared to keep pace with appropriate docking mechanisms for the upcoming iPhone 5S, 6, 6S, et al.
