UPDATE - NOT PICTURED BUT INCLUDED ARE A BRAND NEW POP TOP TENT IN YELLOW, ELECTRONIC IGNITION CONVERSION (INSTALLED), ALL NEW SEALS FOR THE POP TOP, SPARE TIRE MOUNT FOR THE FRONT OF THE BUS AND SPARE TIRE COVER IN BLACK.

Very nice 1971 VW Westfalia Campmobile for sale.  Very solid bus underneath, no rust in the engine bay, battery compartment, footwells, or any other of the usual places.

The interior sports the original burnt orange cushions.  The bench cushions are in great shape and the rear cushion is about average with some marks on the underside from sitting in a barn for years, but still in very usable condition.  The original picnic stool is also included.

The original cot is installed, but there is currently no pop-tent installed.  The photos do not show the rubber seals on the pop top, but they are now installed.  The seal on the front bay window is new.

The white paint is satisfactory for a daily driver, but you will want to respray her and replace all the seals while you are doing it if you want to do a full on restoration.

The engine and clutch are recently rebuilt.  New parts also include rear half shafts (axles), new disc brake rotors, pads and calipers up front, new brake drums and pads in back.  Also new KYB gas shocks all around, new Hankook tires (the best for buses), steering damper, tie rods, and lots of little plastic parts.

So what doesn't work?  Right now I'm sorting out the electrical things that have issues, but there aren't a lot of them.  The hazard lights work, but the directional signals don't work properly.  The fuel gauge does not work at all.  (the tank was removed and recoated when the engine was rebuilt so it may be the sender unit)  One of the rear lights glows brightly as if the brakes were on all the time, but the other is fine.   The front seats are a little shabby but I have some cool Hawaiian covers for them if you want them.

1971 was the first year for front disc brakes and the last year for the upright 1600cc engine.  This puppy runs great, is a real hoot to drive and all the camper stuff is there except the fabric for the pop top.

Please email any questions.  Thanks for looking and have a great day.

Anti-UAW VW workers move to form own union

Sat, 30 Aug 2014

The struggle over unionization at the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga, TN, continues to get more complicated. There's now a second union fighting to organize at the plant; although this one is staunchly against the actions of the United Auto Workers. At the same time, the UAW is still signing up voluntary members to its recently created Local 42 at the facility and is reportedly near having a majority of the hourly employees on its side.
The new, anti-UAW union campaign is being spearheaded by employee Mike Burton, according to Reuters, and he calls his group the American Council of Employees. He claims to already have 108 signatures in support of his organization. Burton believes that the UAW is harmful to businesses, and his goal is to force another vote to determine a preferred union among workers.
The UAW was initially defeated (712 to 626) when it attempted a union vote at the Tennessee plant in February. However, UAW secretary-treasurer Gary Casteel told Reuters that Local 42 has already signed up over 700 members. If it can reach a majority of the roughly 1,500 employees, the group hopes VW might consider recognizing it as the factory's union.

VW investigating Golf water leak discovered by car magazine

Sat, 07 Sep 2013

Volkswagen is in a spat with German magazine Auto Bild over claims that its new, seventh-generation Golf may already need a recall. The German weekly reports that new Golfs can leak water into front-passenger footwells due to a faulty drainage tube in their air conditioning systems.
And while the fix itself doesn't sound too terrible, because Volkswagen bases so many cars off the same platform as the Golf, Auto Bild is claiming that 300,000 models could be affected, including the Audi A3 and Seat Leon. That's a very bold claim. For its part, VW is vehemently denying that number, according to Reuters, saying it's aware of the problem and claiming only 46 Golfs need fixing. In addition, it denies that any Audi or Seat models are affected by the issue.
Either way, regardless of how pervasive this leak issue is, North American buyers should rest easy knowing that the problems ought to get fixed by the time the Mk VII Golf finaly reaches our dealerships.

VW promises 7-seat CUV for America in 2016

Mon, 13 Jan 2014

On the eve of the Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen chief executive Martin Winterkorn has confirmed the imminent arrival of a new crossover. The model, previewed at the same show last year by the CrossBlue concept pictured here, will be unique to the North American market when it arrives here in 2016. The new three-row, seven-seat crossover is part of an ambitious expansion plan on the part of Volkswagen and Audi in North America, where the two brands aim to sell a million vehicles by 2018.
That's a mighty big increase over the 600,000 vehicles which the Volkswagen Group sold here last year, but it's moving in the right direction: That number is already a 100-percent increase of what it sold here just five years ago. At that rate, VW should have little trouble meeting its goals, particularly with the arrival of the new crossover and the introduction of Golf production at its assembly plant in Puebla, Mexico.
