This is a 100% rust free California van in mint condition. It was purchased new on October 19, 1971 from South Bay VW in Redondo Beach. The van lived in Southern California all its life until recently when it was shipped to Florida. Included in the sale is the original books, records, and registration from 1971. You will not find a more solid, rust free van.
The exterior was painted white approximately 4 years ago. The paint is still beautiful and retains its original gloss and shine. The door jambs, floors, and engine bay still show the original paint (off white) and are rust free. Note the pictures. The chrome is excellent.
The interior is the exceptional part of this panel. Custom wood paneling and floors highlight the interior. The wood is of excellent quality and done by a professional cabinet maker. It has a custom Kenwood stereo (with detachable faceplate, and no extra holes in the dash), Westfalia folding bed with storage underneath, custom ice chest, and a cool storage bin. When at local shows with the side door open, the van is always at hit! The dash is perfect, as is the front seats, door panels and headliner, and the sliding door works like new.
Mechanically the bus is excellent. A factory replacement engine was fitted 2500 miles ago, the gearbox is smooth in all gears, and all lights work as new. I would not hesitate to drive it across the country, a great cruiser at 65-70 MPH. It has been professionally lowered, not slammed, rides on Momo 17" wheels with new tires, and has front disc brakes. In addition the following are new: battery, all door gaskets (German), and locks with matching keys,
This is a 'no stories' van that has a major cool factor. Although it has been recently registered in Florida the California plates (good thru Sept. 2013) come with the bus.
Call Tom at 904 412-4997 with any questions, I would be happy to answer all I can. I can be reached by email tombungay@comcast.net. Thanks for looking.

Volkswagen E-Co-Motion Concept brings electric mobility to the commercial set
Wed, 06 Mar 2013Volkswagen sees a future where the bulk of the world's freight is moved into city centers by train, then offloaded onto a fleet of smaller, light-duty commercial vehicles for final delivery. Those vehicles could wind up looking something like the company's E-Co-Motion Concept that debuted at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The EV features a modular underfloor drive unit comprised of a battery, motor and gearbox that can be paired with any number of cab and body configurations to suit a buyer's needs, from a refrigerated box to a standard flat bed.
The E-Co-Motion Concept features a rear-mounted electric motor with 113 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. A standard 20 kWh battery pack provides a driving range of up to 62 miles, while 30 kWh and 40 kWh packs could deliver 93 and 124 miles of travel, respectively. Check out the press release below for more information.
Happy 60th to the VW Karmann Ghia
Tue, 20 Aug 2013Volkswagen's product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that's probably because a) you're old and b) the Beetle was the company's only product until the mid-50s.
Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a "Beetle in a sports coat." A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.
It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Golf Cabriolet, XL1 and Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and with that original Karmann Ghia prototype as part of its factory collection.
EU formally questions French government assistance of Peugeot's finance arm
Fri, 28 Dec 2012Recently, the finance arm of PSA/Peugeot-Citroën was in such debt trouble that it was pricing itself out of the car loan market. The rates it was paying to service its debt, which was rated one step above junk, were so high that it was forced to charge car-buying customers higher rates than they could find elsewhere. This was adding to Peugeot's already impressive woes by sending revenue out the door to competitors.
Two months ago a deal was worked out with the French government whereby the state would provide 7 billion euro ($9 billion USD) in bonds to guarantee the finance arm's loans. The French government could nominate someone to join the Peugeot board, Peugeot would guarantee more French jobs, and on top of that deal, other banks would provide non-guaranteed loans. The government would take no equity stake in the car company.
Although not yet finalized, the arrangement is meant to create some breathing room for Peugeot Finance to lower its interest rates for customers, and a government-nominated board member, Louis Gallois, was recently named to Peugeot's supervisory board. The arrangement was also openly questioned by at least three competitors: Ford, Renault - which is 15-percent owned by the French government after it received state aid - and the German state of Lower Saxony, itself a 15-percent shareholder in Volkswagen.
