1969 Convertible Beetle Baja Bug on 2040-cars
Atascadero, California, United States
This bug is a head-turner. I have had it for about
two years and never used it off road except for the dirt road I live on. I used
it mostly for my commute to surf in Morro Bay so I modified the exhaust system to make it
quieter, put on new original-sized tires
in the front to get the odometer and speedo working more accurately.
This car is best in convertible weather since there is no heater and always breezy. I‘m ready for a car with an automatic and cruise control. Maybe a sunroof. Car runs great, but it’s still a ’69 Bug. 1600cc motor with .009 distributor. Tuned to run on premium fuel for better mileage and performance. About 27mpg, Servicing has been done by Jim’s Automotive in Morro Bay and they do great work very reasonably. Stops well with new brakes but emergency brake handle is not locking. Good CD player and radio. Odometer just turned over and reads about a thousand miles. Car has a snap on bimini top that keeps out the sun and some of the breeze. I also have the original convertible top frame and rear window that came with the car. Lots of time and money making her look like she does, but of course, she’s still not perfect. Have extra parts and idiot's guide to VW. No rear seat but rear area all carpeted. Buyer must arrange for pickup or shipping. I can possibly drive to you for a reasonable fee depending on location. |

2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet
Thu, 07 Mar 2013The Golf VI's Last Hurrah Is Pure Niche
This was in the heart of the ultra-chic Côte d'Azur during winter. The car to be tested was the not-for-North America 2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet. Prevailing weather conditions here this time of year are bizarrely pleasant, as though a dome of Swarovski crystal has been placed over the entire region to protect it from any real winter spoiling things. And the zippy Golf R Cabriolet is a sports car designed precisely for this area's preciously narrow winding streets, as well as for the lofty budgets of its property owners.
So then why was it snowing like we were in northern Michigan? The weather front hit from the north like a swift kick to the Jordaches. The roof was open on this Candy White Golf R Cabrio and I, as is my wont, was determined through thick or thin to keep it retracted. It had been raining and sometimes sleeting like the End of Days, but I kept the lid cracked because the 261-horsepower cabrio - the most powerful convertible ever built by Volkswagen - was snipping along nicely as the bad weather blew over my head and wetted only the rear headrests.
2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid
Tue, 12 Feb 2013More Fun Than A Prius, Less Sensible Than A TDI
Let's have some fun, and do some math. We're talking pretty rudimentary stuff, multiplication and division, to figure out if the upcoming Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid can make a baseline case for itself against two very strong competitors in this segment. The competitors in question, at least for now, are two more Jettas: the diesel-drinking TDI and the fit-for-the-masses SE with VW's long-serving 2.5-liter engine.
To keep the equations clean and simple (hey, we're writers), we'll calculate based on the most flattering EPA miles per gallon stat from highway driving for all cars, assume a healthy 20,000 miles driven per year, and factor in today's average cost for the respective fuels these three require: diesel (TDI), regular (SE) and premium (Hybrid). We'll also start with the base prices for all models.
UAW tactics called into question at VW's TN plant
Thu, 26 Sep 2013The United Auto Workers is in hot water with some of the very workers it is trying to unionize at Volkswagen's Chattanooga assembly plant. According to The Tennessean, eight Volkswagen factory workers have filed complaints against the UAW with the National Labor Relations Board, claiming the union "misled or coerced" them into formally asking for union representation.
The UAW has instituted a major push at the Chattanooga plant to represent the 2,500 hourly laborers that build the VW Passat by using what's called a card-check process. The tactic is opposed by the National Right to Work Legal Defense foundation, the group representing the workers. The card-check process demands that a company recognize a union that obtains the signatures of more than half its workforce, according to The Tennessean. This tactic is in contrast to the more traditional route, which sees employees vote on union representation.
The workers filing the complaint claim that the UAW told them the cards merely called for a secret ballot, rather than an outright demand for union representation. Workers also allege that the UAW has made it overly difficult to reclaim their signed cards, some of which were signed so long ago that they have been rendered invalid. Although the cards can force a company's hand, federal law still allows the company to ask for a secret ballot before yielding to unionized workers.
