Classic 1956 VW bug! This car was "restored" when I bought it 5 years ago, but not to a level I liked so had some work done... New wiring harness done correct with color coding to original. Heat shields placed in engine compartment, new tires including spare, got a jack and hub caps. The engine has been updated along with transmission so No grinding that first gear. I think it has 1600 engine but not sure (was done prior to me buying it)... also upgraded to 12 volt system. Has brand new battery. I think radio is older 6 volt so that does not work. Body and pan numbers are a match!!! Anyone interested needs to know this is a 57 year old car... I am not an expert nor a mechanic so buyer assumes all liability after purchase as I did. But I drove it from San Diego to Northern California...then put some $ into it...but has a few minor issues. Wing window locks need work, and spring on engine cover missing. This car was bought because I was born in '56 and when my mother passed I bought it.... Now sitting never really out of garage, but occasionally I will run to keep new battery charged and parts lubed. I will entertain offers but will not "give" it away. Runs great...again I drove it home!!!! Ran great up Grapevine (I-5 north of LA)! Needs good home. This will only appreciate. They are getting few and far between. I have done no homework on shipping so that will need to be paid by buyer, or local pick up. We are east of Stockton. North of Yosemite. Great road trip!!!!

VW makes $23K on every Porsche sold, more than Bentley or Lamborghini

Fri, 14 Mar 2014

It's a good time to be in the luxury car business. In Volkswagen Group's financial report for the 2013 fiscal year, it is revealed that that Porsche enjoyed an operating margin of 18 percent. That means the Stuttgart brand made on average about $23,200 per car sold, according to BusinessWeek. Bentley wasn't far behind, and Audi (which was combined with Lamborghini) posted a 10.1 percent margin. This compares to only around 2.9 percent for the Volkswagen brand.
"Luxury brands are on fire," said Dave Sullivan, an industry analyst at AutoPacific. He said that the average profit margin is between six and eight percent. Brands like Porsche and Bentley have the benefit of competing in rarefied markets. Buyers looking at one their vehicles have fewer models to shop against and don't care as much about price. They can also charge more for options, which further boosts income, according to BusinessWeek.
In a way, we should be more impressed by the continued success from Audi. Its models generally have direct competitors in every segment from the other premium automakers. Plus, their buyers aren't the captains of industry who are shopping for a Bentley. Still, the Four Rings is leading rivals in sales so far this year.

This Or That: 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro vs. 1987 Land Rover Defender [w/poll]

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

As I scoured auction sites and classified ads for the perfect vehicle to take into battle with Autoblog Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, I knew I needed to find something unique. You see, I'm currently 0-2 at winning a round of This or That, in which two of our editors agree on a category, choose a side, and argue it out over a (mostly) friendly chain of emails.
The first time we did this, my chosen Fiat 500 Abarth took about a third of the popular vote in our reader poll. The second time, my lovely 1980 Oldsmobile 442 did just a little bit better against a 1989 BMW 635 CSi. Despite holding the opinion that my automotive choices, though perhaps a little bit more... obscure than my fellow editors, are still better, an outright win would go a long way toward boosting my vehicular self worth a few notches upward.
With all of that out of the way, even if three isn't my lucky number after all, I go into battle against Brandon knowing full well that I've made the perfect choice: A 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro. My rough-and-tumble van/'ute has a formidable opponent in the form of a 1987 Land Rover Defender, which, truth be told, is exactly what I was expecting from Turkus, a self-proclaimed Rover aficionado.
