1972 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ55 - Inline 6

I’m selling my 1972 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ55 featuring the upgraded 2F Inline 6 (20K miles on newer engine) and 4 speed transmission combo and a long list of mechanic updates making this one of the most mechanically strong FJ55s out there.  This Cruiser will climb any mountain, 4 wheel drive works awesome and has been tested in Western NC.  For example, last Winter I completed a 500 mile road trip and got 14+ MPG on the highway – although generally not a MPG figure you see boasted, for an old SUV it’s pretty impressive.  I’ll detail the complete list of mechanical updates from the restoration below, 20K invested from start to finish.

Exterior wise, what gets the most compliments on my FJ55 is the color: a metallic silver by Dupont that looks especially nice in the sun.  Also included and what really completes the look are the gutter mount Yakima roof racks (take off the truck when storing in garage) – the perfect combination and look for this body style and color in my opinion.  FYI-the original factory exterior color way was beige lower and white upper half.

On the interior is in pretty good condition, you might want to do a few cosmetic things here and there but nice overall.  Headliner and dash are original so showing some signs of wear.

Restoration process details (completed June 2010; only approximately 20K miles since the engine upgrade) included the following notable mechanical updates:

  • Engine conversion to Land Cruiser 2F 6-cylinder
  • Transmission updated to 4 speed
  • Upgraded to Holley carburetor and Holley fuel pump
  • New Fuel lines and fuel filter.
  • New Starter
  • Replaced with Sealed Battery
  • New ignition switch and newer shifter
  • Replaced center arm, drag arms, tie rod ends
  • Drive shafts, balanced and installed new u-joints
  • Proper speedometer reading adjustment with custom cable/inverter
  • Replaced steering box
  • Replaced suspension bushings, shackles and grease-able mod pins
  • Upgraded shocks and steering stabilizer
  • 4" lift, professionally performed, only the best hardware used.
  • Upgraded to deep dish performance off road rims and all matching 33" Mickey Thompson Baja Claws (~75% tread remaining)

Notable Exterior:

  • Beautiful paint silver subtle metallic element
  • All glass in excellent condition -  brand NEW front windshield w/ gasket and NEW rear glass.
  • Some weather-stripping updated with new or new reproduction.
  • Shiny chrome trim (mirrors, door handles, license plate light housing) in excellent condition
  • Most exterior screws replaced with stainless hardware.
  • Paint is in excellent condition.
  • Frame is solid, some rust repairs in common areas corrected before repainting process but overall nice job.

Notable Interior:

  • Front and rear bench seats recovered
  • Custom black door panels including rear cargo area panels.

In addition to the restoration components above, the following recent notable items were performed within the two years:

  • Newer 33" Mickey Thompson Baja Claw Tires (<15K miles on them) $1500
  • Deep dish off road black coated rims
  • New Holley Fuel Pump
  • Proper 4 wheel alignment (April 2012) $100
  • Alternator (April 2011) $135
  • Synthetic blend oil change and new filter  <500 miles ago

As mentioned the cruiser is mechanically superior to any I’ve seen and I would not hesitate to take it on a long road trip.  It shifts through all gears smoothly with ease and can cruise comfortably at 65mph on the highway.  The goal of this FJ55 Restoration was to have as trouble free daily driver.  This model doesn't have A/C, with the back window down and front vents and windows down it generates great air flow through the cabin too.

On the note of the back window, for those not familiar this is actually a powered window on the FJ55 – and a costly and hard to fix item if not working properly.  Mine works perfectly, operated from the front dash switch.  Other items worth pointing out as they are often non-functional in other FJ55’s and/or difficult to fix: ALL lights work including brakes, reverse, side markers, turn signals, hazards, headlights, hi-beams and interior dome light, horn, and window wipers work great.

This has been the most positive attention getting vehicle I’ve ever owned or been in, as with the unique body and rareness of the 55 most aren’t quite sure what it is so ask what model or year or just give a thumbs up because it looks cool – if someone does know what it is they’ll stop and chat away.

I’m located in Wilmington, NC and can work with the buyer to arrange pickup.  If you are going to have the vehicle shipped I can work with you on pick-up arrangements there but shipping cost is not included and is the buyer’s responsibility.  Full payment is due within 7 days after auction close.  No International Bidding Please.  Payment options: cash, wire transfer, or acceptable and US cleared bank cashier’s check.  Once all funds are received and verified I will provide the title to the new owner.  The North Carolina title is clean and clear and in my name.  This is an as is sale with no refunds or warranty provided.  Please have your funds in order and/or any financing approved before bidding.  I have the right to end auction early if pre-qualified buyer is located.

Thanks for looking and let me know if you have any questions or would like me to send additional pics.  I would be happy to forward my cell # to discuss as well.  Good luck and happy bidding!

Audi outlasts rivals to win 13th Le Mans title

Sun, 15 Jun 2014

As is so often the case, the 2014 Le Mans was a war of attrition, and Audi managed to prevail once again after all 24 hours had been recorded in the history books, with its Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro claiming first and second places, followed by Toyota in third. Drivers Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer inherited the lead in their No. 2 Audi after the No. 7 Toyota, driven by pole-sitter Kazuki Nakajima, was forced to retire with electrical problems in the 15th hour.
The No. 2 Audi led the race until it was forced to the pits to replace a turbocharger in the 17th hour, allowing the No. 1 Audi, driven by Lucas di Grassi, Marc Gene (who was a last-minute replacement for Loic Duval, who crashed hard during practice) and defending champion Tom Kristensen, led the race until the 21st hour, when it too had to pit with turbocharger issues. This gave the No. 20 Porsche of Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley, and Mark Webber the lead until it was forced off the track with gearbox problems, eventually finishing in 38th position.
In LMP2, the Jota Sport Zytek Z11SN-Nissan driven by Simon Dolan, Harry Tincknell and Oliver Turvey claimed victory, the first five LMP2 finishers all powered by Nissan. Down a level in GTE-Pro, No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 driven by Gianmaria Bruni, Toni Vilander and Giancarlo Fisichella finished one lap ahead of the leading Corvette Racing C7.R. And finally, the No. 95 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE driven by Kristian Poulsen, David HeinemeierHansson and Nicki Thiim won the GTE-Am race two laps ahead of a Proton Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.

180,000 new vehicles are sitting, derailed by lack of transport trains

Wed, 21 May 2014

If you're planning on buying a new car in the next month or so, you might want to pick from what's on the lot, because there could be a long wait for new vehicles from the factory. Locomotives continue to be in short supply in North America, and that's causing major delays for automakers trying to move assembled cars.
According to The Detroit News, there are about 180,000 new vehicles waiting to be transported by rail in North America at the moment. In a normal year, it would be about 69,000. The complications have been industry-wide. Toyota, General Motors, Honda and Ford all reported experiencing some delays, and Chrysler recently had hundreds of minivans sitting on the Detroit waterfront waiting to be shipped out.
The problem is twofold for automakers. First, the fracking boom in the Bakken oil field in the Plains and Canada is monopolizing many locomotives. Second, the long, harsh winter is still causing major delays in freight train travel. The bad weather forced trains to slow down and carry less weight, which caused a backup of goods to transport. The auto companies resorted to moving some vehicles by truck, which was a less efficient but necessary option.

Manga stylized Toyota Aygo takes on Godzilla

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

Japan has given the world so much to enthuse over. We're not sure the Toyota Aygo is necessarily one of them as much as, say, the Scion FR-S or Lexus LFA (especially since it's actually made in Europe), but for many Nipponophiles, the centuries-old artistic discipline of Manga certainly is. And now the two have come together in this two-and-a-half-minute animated short.
In Toyota's own take on the classic narrative, an Aygo animated by celebrated artist Sonia Leong takes on Godzilla. As in, a giant lizard rampaging through a Japanese city, not the Nissan GT-R, against which the little Toyota would certainly stand even less of a chance by any metric other than affordability, fuel economy or ability to park in tight spots.
In any case, watch this Manga-fied video above, and feel free to read through the related press release below.
