I have owned this car since 1999. I have started and nearly completed its conversion. There is very little left to do to have a very nice track car. Since beginning this project, I have had two children and decided to relocate, hence losing interest in completing it. There is way more money in performance upgrades and accessories than my reserve price, the engine alone would probably cost double to replace. The most substantial modifications include, A new porsche 3.6 crate engine, Porsche DME, modified wiring harness, stage 5 clutch, H&R adjustable suspension, Brembo big red Brakes, TekArt and GT3 carbon Kevlar body panels to include hood trunk and doors, and a full Cage in interior. Porsche revisits the 911's dirty side with rally history film
Fri, 03 Jan 2014It might not be a coincidence that there are rumors of Porsche revealing a safari version of the 911 at April's Beijing Motor Show, just as the Dakar Rally is about to begin. Adding fuel to the dusty desert fire is a just-released official video of Jeff Zwart driving the Porsche 953 that Jacky Ickx drove to victory in the 1984 edition of the race.
In the video, the seven-time Pikes Peak International Hill Climb winner talks about how he grew up with the 911; it wasn't only the car he learned to drive in, it was his choice of racecar no matter whether the course was tarmac or the dirty stuff.
You can decide for yourself if these recent events are mere coincidence while you enjoy the 953's exhaust note in the video below. eBay Find of the Day: 1981 Porsche 928 convertible by Carelli
Wed, 30 Apr 2014The Porsche 928 was perhaps the consummate European GT of its day. With a powerful front-mounted V8 engine that grew in displacement as the model years went on, it was capable of eating up the miles at triple-digit speeds in great comfort for occupants. It was also an unusual beauty, with its sharp front and curved rear featuring innovative integrated bumpers.
Currently for auction on eBay Motors is one of the rarest 928s you're likely to find, in a handsome combination of Guards Red paint and tan leather interior, though we wouldn't mind a less-showy finish to the factory wheels. According to the seller, this car is one of eight 928 convertibles by Carelli Design, a firm that's still in business.
The auction claims that these cars were made in 1981 as a feasibility study between Carelli and Porsche for a possible production 928 convertible. The seller says he worked at the dealership where the car is said to have been originally sold $103,000. To remove the roof and hide the convertible top, there were significant changes made to the body and interior, including redesigned doors and a completely new trunk. As you can see in the gallery, when down, the top is completely hidden in a very factory-like fashion. When up, it looks slightly awkward, though (and we'd really like to see a rear three-quarter view to check out the blind spots).
