The engine and running gear was completely rebuilt or replaced less than 100 miles ago.

. Original 4 cylinder engine with original fuel injection was professionally rebuilt.  Runs cool, smooth, and without oil leaks.  All engine compartment rubber was replaced.  The emergency hand brake was restored to operation.
. Original 5 speed transmission was professionally rebuilt.  All 5 gears were replaced with new gears.  The transmission and its linkage was modified to accept 1974 and later side shift transmissions.  This rebuilt transmission operates easily and smoothly but makes a noticeable wine in 5th gear.  (Probably due to incorrect shims.)
.Body has no observable rust on the bottom side, or in the trunks, or in cockpit.  Some battery cage rust was removed and new metal was professionally welded in place.
.Brakes were completely replaced, including new rotors and calipers.  Improved BMW M-series calipers were installed in the front for better performance.
.The existing suspension system was replaced with new, slightly-stiffer springs and shocks.  The car now corners very nicely.
.The original equipment mag wheels were checked for true.  Four brand new tires were installed.  Wheels were professionally aligned.
. All windows are pristine.  The front windshield is brand new.
. All cockpit components are in place and operate properly.  A third party radio is for shits and should be replaced.
. Original side mirrors are in place and operate.
. All original emblems are in place.

What's left to restore car?
. Needs full repainting.
. Rear trunk lid has a hell-hole rust spot in middle.  If desired, an option is to replace all trunk lids and doors with fiberglass items which are sold on line.
. The cockpit needs a full re-upholstery and a new rug.
. The driver side door has been replaced with a door that has some superficial rust.  This door could be sanded and repainted to look as new.
. An aftermarket front air damn is missing a chunk of plastic near bottom left.
. The Targa top (fiberglass) looks good from a slight distance but has a couple small abrasions.  Could be repaired and repainted to look as new. The top rattles a bit, but this could be fixed with new rubber mounts.
. The mag wheels are missing their center caps.
. The steering damper should be replaced.  A slight vibration is noticeable at highway speeds around 70 mph.

McLaren boss' exclusive Porsche 935 Street is worth three 911 Turbos

Wed, 21 May 2014

McLarens may be exclusive, but there are still hundreds - if not thousands - of people out there who can say they own one. Mansour Ojjeh is one of them, but he doesn't just own a McLaren - he owns McLaren. As in, the company that makes the racing and exotic supercars. Or 25 percent of it, anyway. As the head of Techniques d'Avant Garde, Ojjeh is one of the British outfit's largest shareholders, previously having owned Heuer watches (before selling it to luxury giant LVMH) and engineered Porsche's most successful foray into Formula One - winning the world drivers' championship three times in a row and the constructors' title twice with Alain Prost and Niki Lauda behind the wheel of McLarens with Porsche engines developed and branded by TAG.
In short, he probably could get any McLaren he wanted at the drop of a hat, but also had strong ties to Porsche in the 80s, and this is the car he wanted. It's called the Porsche 935 Street, and it's the only one ever made. Inspired by the 935 racer that won Le Mans and over 120 other races, Ojjeh contracted Porsche Exclusive when it was still in its infancy to make him one for the road. So they took a 930 bodyshell, slotted in the 3.3-liter turbo flat-six from the 934 but cranked output up to 375 horsepower, and gave it the brakes, suspension, BBS wheels and wide-body aero from the 935 racer. They painted it a deep metallic red and trimmed the interior with cream leather and wood veneer.
When all was said and done, a total of 550 modifications were performed, detailed on a seventeen-page invoice and costing as much as three new 911 Turbos at the time. Ojjeh only put 12,000 miles on the odometer, running up and down the French Riviera, and has now put it up for sale at the upcoming Bonhams auction at Spa where it's tipped to fetch upwards of 300,000 euros - equivalent to $410k at today's rates, or, once again, the price of about three new 911 Turbos.

Hyundai, Porsche top J.D. Power APEAL study

Wed, 23 Jul 2014

Just as they did in the Initial Quality Study, Porsche and Hyundai have taken the premium and non-premium crown, respectively, for the 2014 J.D. Power APEAL study. This is the tenth consecutive year for that Porsche has been rated the best premium make in the APEAL study, which attempts to figure out how pleased owners are with their purchases. For 2014, it asked 86,000 owners of MY2014 cars to rate their vehicles in 77 different categories 90 days after their initial purchase. The resulting figures were plugged in deliver the APEAL score, which is rated on a 1,000-point scale.
The industry average sits at 794 points for 2014, although that's a one-percent decline over last year's rating. In this year's study, premium brands averaged 840 out of 1,000, while non-premium makes average 785. For their part, Porsche netted an impressive 882 points, while Hyundai earned an 804. Interestingly, only four non-premium brands (Hyundai, Ram, Volkswagen and Mini) finished above the industry average for 2014.
It's also interesting to see the clear delineation between premium and non-premium brands, with an eight-point gap between the non-premium champ, Hyundai, and the lowest-rated premium brand, Volvo.

Porsche calls in The Committee for Boxster and Cayman GTS

Thu, 20 Mar 2014

Porsche is set to offer up the very first GTS variants of its more affordable Boxster convertibles and Cayman coupes. This is very good news for enthusiasts. Aside from our original post announcing the hotted up models, though, Porsche hasn't given us much to go on.
And you know what? This video isn't much of help either. It's called The Committee, and we're guessing it's meant to highlight the lengths that Porsche went to in designing what are essentially sportier trim levels for its two most affordable entries. Still, it's a stylized and entertaining video with a few entertaining driving scenes scattered throughout, and it gives just a small glimpse of Porsche's view of the vaunted GTS badge.
Take a look below for the full video.
