Take a POV hot lap in the Porsche 918 Spyder

That title about says it all. This is a hot lap of the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, TX, with Porsche Works Driver Patrick Long at the wheel of a Porsche 918 Spyder. The camera is basically showing us everything that Long sees, making this not just one of the coolest 918 videos we've seen, but also one of the neatest laps of CoTA.
As Long peers through the bends, so will you. You'll see him fight the wheel, and find out just how difficult it is to hustle this hybrid hypercar around a world-class track at speed. It's pretty darn entertaining. There are also a few scattered shots of the 918's exterior just to break up the interior awesomeness, although we aren't exactly complaining about those. As an automaker's identity evolves over years, its signature becomes defined by any number of factors - heritage (Mercedes-Benz), image (Lamborghini), or market share (Toyota). In the case of Porsche, it was an engineering quirk that forged the German company's most enduring character trait.
Porsche would not have survived - let alone, thrived - in today's saturated landscape had it not been for the 911, and that slope-tailed sports car wouldn't have sprung to life without its predecessor, the 356. While phenomenal success of those rear-engine icons built the company, forays into the mid-engine configuration have played a significant part in establishing the brand's identity.

Porsche prioritizes 200,000-unit sales target over exclusivity [w/poll]

Would a Porsche still be a Porsche if it weren't as exclusive? That's the question which industry pundits are asking - and customers may soon as well - as the German automaker emerges from the fringe in pursuit of larger volumes.
A dozen years ago Porsche was barely selling over 50,000 units per annum. In a sales surge that has gathered pace as fast as a 911 Turbo, however, it was already hovering around the 100,000-unit mark a few years later. Last year it sold over 160,000, and has targeted 200,000 units by 2018. But it may not even take that long.
Automotive News reports that Porsche has advanced its targets to reach for 200,000 units by the end of this year or the next. The bump in sales would be driven particularly by the introduction of the new Macan, of which it aims to sell 50,000 units annually, starting next year. The Cayenne currently stands far and away as its most successful model. The 911 and Panamera have swapped second place a few times over the past five years, followed by the Boxster and Cayman.
