1976 Porsche 911S Targa 93,000 original miles!
This absolutely beautiful 40-year old 911S was sold to the original Northern California owner on December of 1975.
He had the car for about 10 years before selling it to a neighbor who would go on to use it as a weekend cruiser
for the next 30 years. This Porsche has spent its entire 40 year life in the California foothills. It has always
been garaged in between use, is totally rust free and has been driven only 93,000 miles since new! A rare find
indeed! Our home recently sold on Labor Day (September 7th) and we are moving to our beach house back east on Cape
Cod for the next year or two. I can’t take it with me because we have no garage there, and I don’t want to
store it here in California because of all the associated “non-use” issues that go along with not starting a
car for such a long period of time. Please note that I am not a mechanic, body shop owner, or car dealer, nor am I a
self-professed Porsche guru. I am simply a gentleman that has been fortunate enough to have owned several Porsches
over the past 40 years. In my humble opinion, this is a really nice one and given its present condition should
bring the new owner a lot of joy and compliments from envious onlookers for many years to come.
Mechanical Condition:
Excellent! Runs and drives like new! Driven only 93,000 miles in the past 40 years and feels like it should. The
engine is super strong, the 5-speed transmission shifts perfectly (even when cold), the brakes are awesome, and all
the lights, wipers, gauges, etc. work perfectly – even the horn and clock work! In addition, it has been updated
with the pop-off valve and the expensive Carrera tensioners. The compression is 130-135 in all 6 cylinders. Just
changed all the fluids (engine/transmission) and had the car smogged last week. It passed with flying colors, even
with all the factory smog equipment present and accounted for!
Exterior Condition:
This 911S looks absolutely beautiful from just 5 feet away! The very rare “Desert Beige” color is stunning
especially with the chrome package (roll bar, window trim, wing window skurrounds, headlight bezels, and door
handles). However, upon closer scrutiny, one will find that the 20-year old paint job is starting to show its age
(i.e., some touched up nicks, chips, door dings, etc….) In other words, it looks really nice like it does in the
pictures, unless you’re within a couple of feet of it. It has excellent door and hood gaps, and comes with the
original Fuchs alloy wheels and like new tires.
Interior Condition:
Excellent throughout! The only real flaw is a 6” crack in the otherwise excellent dashboard. Targa top is in
great shape as well. Front and rear seats, carpet, door panels, etc., are all in outstanding condition. This 911S
is AC and PW delete (the lightweight model as some people like to call it).
Also included in the sale of my 1976 911S are the original owner’s manual, 70’s ski rack, jack, tool kit
(partial), bra and spare tire.
This Porsche has been lovingly maintained and to the best of my knowledge needs nothing more to be used as a
reliable every day car, or just a really fun weekend driver. If I were keeping it I can’t think of anything I
would do to make it any better.

Jack Olsen built one Porsche to do it all

Wed, 23 Jan 2013

Jack Olsen has built himself a lair called the 12-Gauge Garage, and inside that garage he built a lairy Porsche 911 nicknamed Black Beauty II. Although it looks like one of Stuttgart's models from the sixties or seventies, it is actually four decades of 911 gubbins from 1965 to 2000 thrown under one shell: the lightweight body is from 1972, the transaxle from 1977, the brakes from a 1986 Turbo, the engine from 1995, for example. It weighs 2,400 pounds and it's got 272 horsepower to get it going, but it's still a pure Porsche, Olsen saying, "If you stop thinking about what you're doing, it will remind you in very abrupt ways."
Olsen said the real point has been to have one car that does it all, so he does everything in his 911 from neighborhood runs to 7-11 to track racing - he loads the aero bits in the car and bolts them on trackside. And he says he'll never stop tweaking the suspension.
You can watch and hear the rest in Olsen's words in the video below.

VW makes $23K on every Porsche sold, more than Bentley or Lamborghini

Fri, 14 Mar 2014

It's a good time to be in the luxury car business. In Volkswagen Group's financial report for the 2013 fiscal year, it is revealed that that Porsche enjoyed an operating margin of 18 percent. That means the Stuttgart brand made on average about $23,200 per car sold, according to BusinessWeek. Bentley wasn't far behind, and Audi (which was combined with Lamborghini) posted a 10.1 percent margin. This compares to only around 2.9 percent for the Volkswagen brand.
"Luxury brands are on fire," said Dave Sullivan, an industry analyst at AutoPacific. He said that the average profit margin is between six and eight percent. Brands like Porsche and Bentley have the benefit of competing in rarefied markets. Buyers looking at one their vehicles have fewer models to shop against and don't care as much about price. They can also charge more for options, which further boosts income, according to BusinessWeek.
In a way, we should be more impressed by the continued success from Audi. Its models generally have direct competitors in every segment from the other premium automakers. Plus, their buyers aren't the captains of industry who are shopping for a Bentley. Still, the Four Rings is leading rivals in sales so far this year.

Porsche considering X6-style Cayenne coupe

Mon, 05 May 2014

It was practically unthinkable when Porsche introduced the Cayenne in 2002. An SUV... from Porsche? Purists balked, but customers flocked, and the Cayenne propelled the its holding company into such profitability that it practically took over the entire Volkswagen Group. It's now been twelve years since the original Cayenne arrived as the first production Porsche with more than two doors, and Zuffenhausen has since followed up with the Panamera, the Macan and the second-generation Cayenne. But it isn't about to stop there.
The latest intel coming in from overseas suggests that Porsche is in the advanced stages of designing a slant-back, five-door Cayenne coupe to take on the likes of the BMW X6 and upcoming Mercedes-Benz MLC. Though the business case (however solid BMW may have already demonstrated it to be) is still being considered, if approved it would join the upcoming third-generation Cayenne on the production line in Leipzig as early as 2018 - a year after the new Cayenne itself is expected to arrive.
The Cayenne coupe would share much with the more conventional MkIII Cayenne (and for that matter the next Audi Q7 and VW Touareg as well as the Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Falcon) but differentiate itself with a more stylish (if less practical) roofline and an altogether sportier attitude. Autocar reports that the design calls for tauter sheetmetal and sportier cabin inspired by the 918 Spyder. Pricing would be positioned a good 15-20 percent higher than the regular Cayenne, and the "coupe" version would likely be offered with most, if not all of the engines available in the conventional version - including gasoline, diesel, turbo and possibly even hybrid options ranging all the way up to the 550-horsepower Turbo S.
