1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am: The Pontiac Firebird is an outstanding vehicle built by the Pontiac division of General Motors between 1967 and 2002. The Firebird was introduced the same year as the automaker's platform-sharing model, the Chevrolet Camaro. This coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, which shared its platform with another pony car, the Ford Mustang.
The second generation debut for the 1970 model year was delayed until February 26, 1970, because of tooling and engineering problems; thus, its popular designation as a 1970 1/2 model, while leftover 1969s were listed in early Pontiac literature without a model-year identification. In 1979 the Firebird was re-designed with new graphics and a front nose with quad rectangular headlamps that stood in separate bezels with a new grille below them. The rear end also got a make-over and featured blackout panels that disguised the taillights on Formula and Trans Am models.
The iconic stylings that Pontiac created are still just as popular today as they were when originally designed over 47 years ago.
This exceptional Firebird Trans Am maintains impeccable cosmetics and is amazingly original with only 35k miles and its unrestored factory Starlight Black paint. The Camel Tan interior is as equally immaculate and retains a "showroom new" appearance with the original factory display pieces. Documentation includes a copy of the original title, owners manual, and warranty information. Also included is the original window sticker that verifies that this Trans Am shows exactly as it did when it rolled off the assembley line 35 years ago. Additional options and highlights include; 403 V8 (6.6L) Engine, 4bbl Carb, Automatic w/ Console Shifter, WS6 Special Performance Package, Power Steering, 4 Wheel Power Disc Brakes, Factory A/C, Center Console Storage, Rubber Floor Mats, Owners Manual, Rear Defrost, Rear Spoiler, Soft-Ray Tinted Glass, Tire Tools, Space-Saver Spare, 15" Honeycomb Factory Wheels, and New BF Goodrich Radial Tires! If strong future collectability and "pleasure to drive" are on your pre-purchase checklist, this unrestored, highly original, low mileage, well maintained, and documented Firebird is the collector's piece you are looking for. Lutz dishes dirt on GM in latest Autoline Detroit
Mon, 20 Jun 2011Bob Lutz sits down for Autoline Detroit - Click above to watch video after the jump
Autoline Detroit recently played host to Bob Lutz, and, as is always the case, the former General Motors vice chairman dished out some great commentary. Lutz was promoting his new book Car Guys vs. Bean Counters: The Battle for the Soul of American Business, and talk quickly turned to his role as it related to product development and high-level decision making at GM. While on the topic of brand management, Lutz revealed a few rather interesting tidbits about his former employer:
All Chevrolet vehicles were required to have five-spoke aluminum wheels and a chrome band up front, as part of the Bowtie brand's overall image.
Airbag recall adds 85k Pontiac Vibes to tally
Fri, 13 Jun 2014The repairs needed for the faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata continue to expand. Toyota initially announced a recall of 766,300 vehicles equipped with the bad part on June 11 as a followup to a campaign from 2013. Soon after, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a preliminary evaluation into five automakers who also used the component in their models. Now, NHTSA has released the official announcement of the latest Toyota recall listing 844,277 affected cars, including the newly added 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe.
While NHTSA's document didn't include a model-by-model breakdown, General Motors spokesperson Alan Adler estimated to Autoblog that roughly 85,000 Vibes in the US would be covered under the latest recall. Like the rest of the affected models, the airbag inflator could rupture in a crash causing the bag not to work correctly, possibly spraying metal fragments at the occupant.
Toyota spokesperson Cindy Knight told Autoblog that the reason for the disparity between the earlier press release and NHTSA document was that Toyota was continuing to comb through VINs to create a list of affected vehicles. The original number was an estimate of that process at the time. Scroll down to the recall report from NHTSA.
Sci-fi movie Jinn features car designer, Firebird-bodied Camaro
Tue, 08 Apr 2014If you're an automotive engineer being tormented by an immortal being made of fire, then wouldn't you think it best to have a custom coupe called the FireBreather for your getaway car? That's the FireBreather in the image above, adorned by the red wings that once fronted the Pontiac Firebird, running away from a black cloud of evil in a trailer for the movie Jinn.
The Jinn is eternal evil, always waiting for the chance to make things float across rooms before going on homicidal urban rampages. The FireBreather is a Gen-V Chevrolet Camaro - from the V6 to the ZL1 - that's been through Classic Design Concepts' extensive list of exterior and interior modifications, including entirely new front and rear fascias and side skirts, sway bars and springs, Pirelli P Zeroes and an available Edelbrock supercharger.
The movie - FireBreathing chase scenes and all - was shot in Monroe, Michigan. You can watch the trailer below, but since the FireBreather only get a couple of seconds on screen, you can find out more about it on Street Legal TV and its official site.
