In the late 80's I would skip Fridays and hang out at Mecham Racing who made the famous Macho T/A's and I remember this car being built. As verified by Dennis Mecham, this is one of only a couple of Daytona 500 Pace Cars that had the MSE Motorsports Edition conversion. This car is numbered 1983-95. This car was brought in by Thibideau Pontiac in Tucson, AZ for the Mecham Conversion, which subsequently, according to Dennis Mecham, ruined their professional relationship. My friend, Heath Elmer (of Heath Elmer Restorations) and I have probably owned 20 Mecham cars over the years and this was the last one that I wanted to own. Our stable has included 1986 Macho T/A, 1986 Magnum IROC, 1985 Magnum IROC, multiple MSE's, Macho Z, Talon T/A's, Turbo Macho's, and numerous Macho T/A's. Heath and I followed this car until it was sideswiped about 10 years ago and totaled. I bought this car then and started to restore it. I have never driven this car exept in and out of the driveway. The car only needs weatherstripping to be completed. I got it this far, start it weekly, then never completed the weatherstripping and started on a Road Runner Project. I have just lost interest in it. I have the original Daytona 500 Aero wheels and caps that were only found on the Daytona Pace Cars, and the Daytona 500 Floor Mats. The Mecham Gauges are made from the correct red light Daytona Pace Car Only Gauges. It has the correct color keyed Daytona Fender Plaque denoting a 5 speed car of which only 520 were released by Pontiac. Mecham only made one or two Daytona MSE's to Dennis' memory. I reserve the right to end the auction early as it is up for sale or trade locally. |

GM recalling another 2.7 million vehicles in five separate campaigns
Thu, 15 May 2014The recalls keep rolling in from General Motors, evidently keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of the ignition-switch debacle and clean house. This time they're all coming at once, with five separate recalls announced together covering approximately 2.7 million vehicles.
The largest of the five actions involves over 2.4 million units of the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura in order to fix brake light wiring harness, which have been found to be susceptible to corrosion. The recall is separate from the 56k Aura sedans which GM recently recalled over faulty shift cables, not to mention the previous massive recall of 1.3 million vehicles - some of them the same models - but appears to have resulted from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation that started with the G6 almost a year ago.
The second-largest campaign involves the 2014 Chevy Malibu, specifically those fitted with GM's 2.5-liter engine and stop/start system, approximately 140,000 examples of which has been found to have problematic brakes. The issue does not appear to be connected to the recall of 8k Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans (also involving brake woes) which we reported upon last week. Four crashes have been reported in such models, but GM admits it's not yet clear if the problem was a contributing factor in the accidents.
Check out the official 2013 Trans Am Hurst Edition commercial

The Poncho is dead. Long live the Poncho. Like certain other reoccurring personal maladies, the aftermarket community simply can't let the Trans Am go without another flare up. The guys at Trans Am Depot have worked up a quick commercial for their newest creation: The 2013 Trans Am Hurst Edition, and it watches pretty much like you'd expect it to. The footage is comprised of just about every TA male fantasy you can conceive of, from Daisy Dukes and white tank tops to tramp stamps, bikinis and ice cream cones. There simply aren't words for what you'll see below.
Of course, we like our T-Tops as much as the next guy. If you like what you see in the videos, you can pick up your very own TA by heading over to the Trans Am Depot site. The guys even have Chevrolet Camaro-based versions of the Pontiac GTO if the '77 TA treatment is too much for your tastes. Enjoy, but don't say we didn't warn you.
Lutz says GM was working on 5th-gen Pontiac GTO
Thu, 08 Aug 2013Bob Lutz was one of the forces behind bringing the Holden Monaro to the United States, as the ill-fated Pontiac GTO in 2004. And while that car received critical acclaim, it was a sales disappointment. Now, Road & Track is reporting that our suspicions were correct - Pontiac was working on a two-door, G8-based coupe before it was shuttered.
In that R&T article, which is no longer available online, Lutz explained that the new GTO would solve many of the issues found in the original. Car Advice speculates that the new model would have look like a rebadged version of the Holden Coupe 60 Concept from 2008, a conclusion we also came to.
That car would have been a big departure from the 2004 to 2006 GTO. It has an extremely long hood and short rear deck, with an almost fastback roofline and a wide greenhouse with a tall beltline. The wheel arches were very pronounced, and the chin and rocker panel splitters gave it a race-ready look. Would it have been enough to make the GTO work in the US? We think it might of, but it looks like we'll never know.
