For your consideration is this 1978 Pontiac Trans Am.  The vehicle was purchased in 2003, where over a span of four years nearly every component of the vehicle was removed, refurbished or replaced, and re-installed.  Since the completion of the restoration, the vehicle has been driven approximately 6000 miles.

Please take the time to read the following material with respect to the vehicle.  I have described the vehicle as accurately as possible and have listed all the work performed on the vehicle during the course of my ownership.  The vehicle is highly dependable, and used as a primary daily driver for the past two years to include one trip halfway across the U.S.  I have extremely enjoyed this vehicle, but am downsizing my collection.

Not shown in the above photos is the all new rear interior (both arm rests, sail panels, seat backs, seat back trim, t-top latch covers, and A-pillar corner trim pieces) just installed.

The vehicle was repainted by the previous owner prior to my purchase.  The paint is in "Good-Excellent" overall condition with some minor chips and paint peeling on the lower right rocker panel.

 

All new Trans Am logo and phoenix decals were installed in 2003 using measurements from the GM assembly line manual.

 

Body:

 

The vehicle body is very solid.  The floor pans have some very small surface rust patches (normal for all t-top cars), but no thin or rusted through sections.  The exterior shows no signs of rust.  Some minor dings and paint peeling on the passenger-side rocker molding are present (see pictures).

 

Interior: 

 

The vehicle was originally equipped with the Custom Interior option, which was partially converted to the Standard Interior.  Nearly the entire interior has been refurbished.  The steering column, and seat frames are all that remain of the original interior that have not been restored.  All other parts have been replaced with brand new parts or restored/refurbished.

 

The seats where re-upholstered prior to my possession of the vehicle and are in “new” condition.  The carpet has been recently replaced with an ACC Essex series, pre-molded carpet, complimented with custom Lloyd’s floor mats.

 

The dash has been recovered by Just Dashes, all gauges either replaced with "like new" used or reproduction (new) gauges, with all other components refurbished or replaced. 

 

The original radio was replaced with an aftermarket Sony stereo with AM/FM/CD/MP3/XM/Sirius capability.  The faceplate contains a 2GB memory chip to hold your favorite MP3 tunes.  Both satellite radio receiver and adapter components have been installed and ready for your satellite radio subscription activation (GPS antenna not mounted).  The stereo remote control, user manual, removal keys, face plate carry case, and USB cable are included.

 

Maintenance

 

All fluids were changed during the restoration and replaced with synthetic types, to include the differential fluid, engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid.  The engine coolant was also replaced and all bushings and ball joints greased with Mobil 1 synthetic grease.

 

All filters to include the transmission, engine oil, and engine breather have been replaced.  Additionally the engine filter has been freshly cleaned and oiled (Accel Cool Blue reusable). 

 

The spark plugs were replaced, gapped, and indexed last year, with less than 1000 miles of use.  Other than engine oil changes, the vehicle will not require any preventative maintenance for another 25,000 miles.

 

Required TLC:

 

-New/braided A/C compressor hose bend too tight, leaks, requires rubber hose or different fitting angles.  A/C system NOT charged.

-Internal engine dipstick tube missing.  Previous owner’s mechanic did not re-install the lower tube.  The dipstick accurately measures the oil quantity, but must not be left in the tube, as the crankshaft will contact the dipstick.

-Engine rear main seal has minor leak (rope seal…normal)

-Left rear aluminum brake drum has developed a stress crack.

-Hurst neutral safety/reverse light switch not connected.

The vehicle’s instrument cluster was changed during prior ownership.  Due to the inability to determine the correct mileage, the mileage is market as "unable to determine" on the title.

 

The title will be mailed via certified mail once full payment is received, confirmed, and cleared by the seller’s financial institution.

 

Shipping

 

The vehicle will not be transferred or released for shipping until full payment is received, confirmed, and cleared by the seller’s financial institution.  No exceptions.

 

The buyer is responsible for the shipping or pick-up of the vehicle and all associated charges.  The buyer must contact the seller prior to scheduling a vehicle pick-up to ensure seller availability at time of vehicle pick-up/exchange.  A contact phone number will be provided at auction close shipping coordination purposes.

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.

NHTSA investigating 550k Pontiac G6 models, 320k Honda Odysseys

According to two separate reports in The Detroit News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching investigations into 550,000 Pontiac G6 (pictured above) and 320,000 Honda Odyssey (pictured right) models. The G6 models are all from the 2005 to 2007 model years, while the Odyssey minivans are from the 2003 and 2004 model years. The two NHTSA probes are not related.
In the case of the G6, this is an upgrade to an original investigation that started in February after NHTSA received "hundreds of reports" that the brake lights on these cars may malfunction. According to The Detroit News, the lights may come on when the brake pedal is not depressed, and likewise, the brake lights may not illuminate when the pedal has been pushed. General Motors was able to provide NHTSA with a significant number of warranty claims, including 1,100 reports that could potentially relate to this problem, one of which indicates a vehicle crash.
For Honda, the NHTSA probe concerns airbags that may deploy unexpectedly. The government agency received six complaints from 2003-04 Odyssey owners saying that the front airbags suddenly went off without a crash. The Detroit News reports that three of the six owners sustained injuries from these incidents. Additionally, NHTSA has received 41 complaints from owners saying the vehicle's airbag warning light had illuminated.

'67 Chevy Corvair convertible vs. '86 Pontiac Fiero in cult classic showdown

Every few a decades, the folks running General Motors lose their minds briefly try to market a car that public doesn't see coming and often aren't ready for. In the '60s there was the rear-engine, air-cooled Chevrolet Corvair, then the mid-engine Pontiac Fiero in the '80s and the completely bizarre Chevy SSR in the 2000s. What all of these had in common was that they bucked the trend for American models of their era, for better or worse. The latest episode of Generation Gap tasked the hosts with finding two cult classic vehicles to choose between; they came come up with two of these quirky products from The General.
On the classic side, there's a 1967 Chevy Corvair Monza convertible. Being from later in the production run, it wears slightly more aerodynamic styling than the earlier, boxier examples. Hanging out back is an air-cooled, 2.7-liter flat-six pumping out a robust 95 horsepower. In the other corner is the somewhat more modern 1986 Pontiac Fiero SE with a mid-mounted, 2.5-liter "Iron Duke" four-cylinder, an engine nearly ubiquitous in GM cars of the '80s.
Judging by when they were new, the Corvair was far more successful than the Fiero with over 1.8 million sold. Of course, Ralph Nader's book Unsafe at Any Speed kind of poisoned the well, even if the poor safety reputation wasn't entirely deserved. The Fiero on the other hand only lasted for a few model years before shuffling off, but it eventually got its own performance boost with the V6 version and rather attractive GT models.
