1988 Firebird Formula 350

47k miles

California Car

3rd Generation Firebird -  Formula History

The Firebird Formula 350 option was GM’s response to Ford’s Mustang LX 5.0.   The B2L RPO Option (the 5.7 liter / 350 MPFI Engine) created an instant contender.   Along with the 350 power plant taken from the Corvette, this 1988 Formula received Pontiac’s high performance WS6 suspension package, 4 wheel disc brakes, and a limited slip differential - providing superior overall performance to Ford’s FOX body.   Its simplified exterior design created an aggressive, no nonsense appearance.   With a limited production run of estimated at under 2000 cars in 1988, the Formula 350 is recognized not only as one of America’s most balanced sports cars of the 80’s but as an intriguing up and coming collector vehicle.

Vehicle Condition:

Exterior:

The exterior paint is original and in excellent overall condition. Some of the usual tiny paint chips behind rear wheels  and a few light scratches here and there - overall the paint is very strong with a high gloss finish.  Very small imperfection in driver door (see picture).   The rear aero wing was removed and repainted -  its in excellent condition with no signs of cracking.  The 16 x 8 Alloy wheels were all professionally refinished.  They are mounted on brand new 245 50 16 Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval high performance tires.   Front and rear bumpers in excellent condition. All glass is in excellent condition.  All decals are in very nice condition.  Rust free body

Interior:

The interior is in excellent overall condition.  The headliner was replaced and is like new.   New hood and hatch struts.  New Lloyd front carpet mats with red Firebird logo. Door panels, black cloth seats, carpet, dash, plastic, and console are all in excellent condition.

Engine / Mechanical:

The original stock L89 350 V8 engine starts right up, and runs strong.  Very responsive throttle.   New parts include MAF sensor, serpentine belt, fuel filter, heater core.  All gauges, lights, turn signals, horn, radio, windows, power antenna, headlight motors, are in excellent working order.   The 700R4 auto transmission’s shifts are positive and smooth in all gears.  3.27 Limited Slip Rear End.  100% Stock exhaust has a nice rumble at idle and sounds great under acceleration.

The power disc brakes are in excellent working condition.  Power steering is tight and precise.  The car is very tight with tremendous handling.

Undercarriage

The undercarriage is incredible; rust free and completely stock.   Brake and fuel lines are original and in excellent condition.

Vehicle Options:

350 performance package, radio with optional graphic equalizer, rear defrost, power windows, door locks, two-tone delete, soft ray glass, luxury trim group, body side moldings, continuous cycle wipers, rear defogger, air conditioning, power brakes, limited slip differential, tilt steering wheel, 4 way manual seat adjustment, visor vanity mirror, lamp group, power antenna, oil cooler, remote deck lid release, etc. Original MSRP: $16,091.

Documentation:

The car was garaged for the last 23 years and used for occasional weekend cruises by the previous owner who puchased the car Jan '90. Meticulously maintained.  It remained on the West Coast until this year.  Documentation includes clean title, owner’s manual, and build sheet.

This is a complete turnkey, original car. Get in and drive with confidence - perfect for car shows or long cruises.

Car is being sold as is.  I welcome prospective bidders to examine the vehicle in person; you will not be disappointed in the quality.  The car is being sold locally; I reserve the right to end the auction at any time.  Private Seller.

GM recalling another 2.7 million vehicles in five separate campaigns

Thu, 15 May 2014

The recalls keep rolling in from General Motors, evidently keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of the ignition-switch debacle and clean house. This time they're all coming at once, with five separate recalls announced together covering approximately 2.7 million vehicles.
The largest of the five actions involves over 2.4 million units of the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura in order to fix brake light wiring harness, which have been found to be susceptible to corrosion. The recall is separate from the 56k Aura sedans which GM recently recalled over faulty shift cables, not to mention the previous massive recall of 1.3 million vehicles - some of them the same models - but appears to have resulted from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation that started with the G6 almost a year ago.
The second-largest campaign involves the 2014 Chevy Malibu, specifically those fitted with GM's 2.5-liter engine and stop/start system, approximately 140,000 examples of which has been found to have problematic brakes. The issue does not appear to be connected to the recall of 8k Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans (also involving brake woes) which we reported upon last week. Four crashes have been reported in such models, but GM admits it's not yet clear if the problem was a contributing factor in the accidents.

This 1927 Oakland is a minimalist hot rod

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

There are hundreds of American automakers that sprung up during the dawn of the automotive era, only to fold into obscurity or get gobbled up by what would eventually become the Big Four (yes, we're counting AMC here). Oakland is one such company, which was the forbearer for General Motors' Pontiac division. Sold until 1931, you simply don't see Oakland-badged cars anymore. Unless, that is, you know Brian Bent.
Bent drives a 1927 Oakland that still rides on wooden wheels. Its original wooden wheels, from the sound of it. That makes this anachronist and his Oakland the perfect subject for a Petrolicious video. Like many of the cars highlighted by Petrolicious, this old Oakland has had some work done to it, featuring a Pontiac flathead engine that's been pushed forward and a clutch pack built by Bent.
Take a look below for a closer look at this rare and fascinating Oakland.

This Auto Aerobics car art ties our brains in knots like pretzels

Sat, 14 Dec 2013

We like cars, and we like art. Naturally, Chris Labrooy's Auto Aerobics series - computer-generated images of some seriously contorted 1968 Pontiac Bonnevilles floating in mid-air - instantly clicked with us. If the Pontiacs weren't floating or hollow, we could be fooled into believing the image is real. But where's the fun in that?
Check out the gallery we included of Labrooy's Bonneville art, and feel free too head over to his website for some Formula One humor.
