1970 Plymouth Road Runner - 39,088 Original Miles

Visit our website for 45+ photos of the car! http://www.vsr1.com/index.php?page=70-road-runner

  • 39,088 Original miles
  • 383 cubic inch engine
  • Automatic Transmission
  • 440 6 Pack Air Grabber hood with 6 Pack carburetors
  • White vinyl interior with bench seat
  • Original AM 8 Track stereo (presently not installed)
  • Optional  "In Violet" metallic paint
  • Authentic 15" Crager S/S wheels

We recently removed this Road Runner from dry indoor storage where it has been for the better part of the last 10 years. The owners growing family and work commitments have left him no time to enjoy the car.

With a bit of work, including, refreshing the carburetors, resealing the intake manifold, and changing all of the fluids, this gem came to life. Equipped with long tube headers, it has its original 383 engine, which a previous owner added an intake setup from a 440 6 Pack, all topped with the very rare Air Grabber hood. The exhaust system has been replaced with a cleanly built dual exhaust from the headers back, with an H pipe and finished off with the correct original tailpipes.

Judging by the tone of the idle, we venture that the camshaft was swapped to something a bit more aggressive as it has a nice lumpy idle. The bottom of the car is very dry and doesn't leave any oil spots.

Below are the details of the fender tag, to aid in deciphering what is stamped on the tag in the photo:

·        Row 1: 01132 159038
Row 2: 088 052 668
Row 3: 26
Row 4: FC7
Row 5: FC7 H2XW EW1 B07 C19027
Row 6: E63 D32 RM21 N0A 160628

These are the additional options packages that are on the car:

  • N96 Fresh Air Hood (Air Grabber)
  • S81 Premium Steering Wheel
  • V21 Performance Hood Treatment (black stripes)
  • R22 AM Radio with 8 track (10 watts)
  • 3 x 2 bbl intake & carburetors (with Air Grabber base plate)

The exterior of this car was redone by the previous owner, we estimate 12+ years ago. It still shines brightly with a lot of gloss, but does have some blistering of the paint on the upper portions of the rear quarter panels. This appears to be a separation of the paint from beneath, and is definitely not a situation of rust. The undercarriage and floors are solid, clean and dry, never repaired and are not in need of any patching or repair work.

The interior of the car sports the original white vinyl seat upholstery, without any tears or split seams. The dash has one small crack above the glove box, door panels are original and clean with good armrests!

As pictured, the paint inside the trunk and rear quarter is the original speckle finish. There are two small dents, one at the right side door joint below the handle and one at the left front corner. Both of these are pictured for reference.
The stripe on the side is the magic artistry of someone with an airbrush paint gun, accented with the correct Road Runner decal.  The car is equipped with the proper “Beep Beep” horn!

Mileage as indicated is original and according to the previous owner, the car spent the majority of it’s life in a garage.

As this car was removed from storage during winter here in New England we have not had the opportunity to drive the car other than in our driveway. It shifts solidly from 1st to second, however reverse is a bit sluggish to engage, and an adjustment of the shift band should resolve this.

Opportunities for original low mileage solid Road Runners don’t come along often! This car has some rare original Plymouth parts that were added that deviate from the original, but enhance the package!  Good luck in bidding, we’ll answer all questions, just call us.

Please inquire directly at 603-228-2888 or via info@vsr1.com for any additional questions or if you have specific details you’d like clarified. We will assist in shipping the car, but all shipping fee’s will be the responsibility of the new owner, FOB, from Bow, NH (03304). The car is currently stored inside, and can be viewed in person by any interested party with advance notice.

'Blood Muscle' auction to sell impressive collection of ill-begotten classic cars

Wed, 30 Jul 2014

The old saying goes that if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. But being a criminal can involve more than just taking a trip to the big house; it can also mean losing possessions purchased from any ill-gotten gains. Still, one man's loss is another's gain, and if you're in Lodi, NJ, on September 12, you stand the chance to buy some of the ultimate muscle cars from the US Marshals in what is being gruesomely nicknamed the Blood Muscle auction.
The grisly moniker was earned because all of the vehicles belonged to the president of a blood testing company who is facing prison time for alleged bribery, according to Hemmings. After all, they are muscle cars bought with actual blood money. The seven-vehicle collection includes some of the ultimate muscle cars ever made, and the original buyer clearly had an eye for rarity.
This cornucopia of V8 power includes a teal 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429, a 1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang, an orange 1970 Plymouth Superbird, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS convertible and perhaps most prized of all - a trio of 1969 Yenko Chevys with a Chevelle, Nova and Camaro all represented. From the included photos, all of them look to be in fantastic condition.

US Marshal's classic muscle car auction officially in the books

Thu, 25 Sep 2014

The US Marshal's so-called Blood Muscle Auction was completed earlier this month, with the prestigious nine-car field (two cars were added following Autoblog's initial story, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 and a rare, mid-restoration 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda) finding new and hopefully law-abiding owners.
While we'd normally recap the stars of the show, in this particular auction, every car's sale was newsworthy. The full list of sale prices doesn't seem to be published, but according to The New York Times, the auction brought in a total of $2.5 million, or an average of about $277,000 per car.
The king of the contest seems to be a 1970 Plymouth Superbird (above, right), complete with a 426-cubic-inch Hemi V8, which brought home $575,000. The trio of Yenko Chevys, meanwhile, all easily cleared the six-figure mark, with the Yenko Camaro (above, far right) clearing $315,000, the Chevelle crossing the block for $237,500 and the supremely rare - one of just 37 - Yenko Nova (shown above, left) selling for an even $400,000.

SRT belatedly claims Plymouth Prowler as one of its own

Wed, 19 Dec 2012

Before Chrysler had Street and Racing Technology, it had Performance Vehicle Operations. What the two entities have in common, before SRT became its own brand, of course, is that each was created to take Chrysler and Dodge (and Plymouth, before it was unceremoniously killed off) vehicles to the next level of style and performance.
We'll leave the question of whether or not the old Plymouth (and later Chrysler) Prowler was ultimately a stylish, performance-oriented car to you, but the boys and girls currently leading the SRT charge at the Pentastar headquarters are keen to accept the retro-rod into the fold.
According to the automaker, all of SRT's current high-performance models owe a debt of gratitude to the old Prowler, due mostly to that car's use of lightweight bits and pieces and innovative construction techniques. If nothing else, the fact that the Prowler's frame is "the largest machined automotive part in history" is pretty cool. Read all the details here.
