The original muscle car! 1950 Oldsmobile 88 Deluxe. When was the last time you saw one like this??? I know very little of the history of this car, but I'll do my best to describe what we have here. I was told this car sports it's original paint. The paint in flaking on the roof of the car and has some other scratches and dings. You could just clear coat it and go for that popular "patina" look, or have it redone. I decided to leave that up to the next owner. The interior was obviously redone, though I don't know exactly when. The previous owner bought the car in 1995 and it looked like this in 1995. I have not found any rust on the frame, in the floors, trunk, anywhere. 57,600 original miles on the clock. Sports sun visor, dual spot lights, dual exhaust. Converted to 12v system. Converted to Hurst ProMatic 2 floor shifter. CD player in the glove box with speakers under the dash (this doesn't appear to work, possibly a fuse or wiring issue, I have not messed with it). Firestone wide white walls in excellent condition. No power steering, no power brakes, no AC, just straight line horsepower. Very easy to lay down the rubber with this car....it is fast and it is loud (but not obnoxious). Car gets thumbs up and honks any time I take it out.

Few items of note: I know this is not the original engine setup. Obviously the oil bath has been removed, and it has a QuadraJet 4bbl carb. I have been trying to ID the engine (Olds guys maybe you can help me with this) and I know it is a 50's era engine, but I don't think it is a '50 engine, as the oil filler tube is straight and on all '50 303ci engines I've seen it leans to the left. Also valve covers are different than a stock 303ci. That's about all I can tell you on the engine. No leaks, no drips. Gas gauge not functioning. Clock not functioning. Wipers don't work. This could all be fuse related or wiring related, I have not investigated these issues as they are minor to me and I've had too much fun driving the car to worry about the clock or the wipers.Chrome is in amazing shape, especially considering the year of the car. Pictures speak for themselves on that. All glass is good, no cracks or chips.

The VIN on the title comes back as a 1951 Olds. This is a 1950 as the '51 had a different dash (but looks the same on the exterior). Not a big deal to me, if it is to you please consider this before bidding. I've had no trouble titling or insuring the car.

If you want a car you can get in, drive to a car show, and draw a crowd, you're looking at it. I encourage you to contact me with any questions and I'll do my best to respond. I can provide additional photos upon request.

Meant to say engine is a 50's era Oldsmobile engine, just not sure what year.

I want to thank everyone for the additional information provided on the car. As I said I don't know a ton about it, so any knowledgeable help is always appreciated.

As to the engine, a lot of folks are suggesting its either an Olds 350 or Olds 455. I can say it does have "OLDSMOBILE" stamped across the front top of the manifold. Personally I don't think it's a 455 just because I have other GM cars with a 455 (including a '70 which was the first year 455) and the engine looks quite different than that engine. I'm not sure how big of a deal this is to anyone (it really doesn't matter to me, I just know it goes fast!) but it definitely doesn't have the original 303ci engine in it so I just want to make that clear.

I'll also quote one of our very helpful ebayers as to the year of the car:

"The factory called this a 1951 88A and is quite rare.  Basically it was built with leftover 1950 parts; GM was famous for doing this kind of thing over the years.  The major clue from the pictures is that they used the 1951 lettering around the hood globe.  Otherwise it does indeed look exactly like a 1950 model."

I agree with this statement after doing some additional research. I have also noticed that the 1950 Oldsmobile hood ornament rocket has 6 grooves in the "wings" whereas the '51 does not contain those grooves. The ornament on this car does not contain those 6 grooves.

As always, feel free to contact me and I'll answer questions as I can, and if anyone wants additional photos I'm happy to email them to you.

Thanks!

eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.
