1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible I purchased this very rare convertible several years ago out of Cleveland Ohio, altough I noticed the last inspection expired in August of 1998 in Massachusetts from the decal on the lower right portion of the windshield. However, The original owner as documented on the new vehicle warranty was a doctor from Tucson Arizona that purchased the car new on February 10, 1972. To further verify this car I have the Protecto Plate, and the Broadcast sheet with a data plate picture to prove the numbers are correct to match the body. According to the previous owner, this Olds does have the original numbers matching Big Block Rocket 455 engine, and I double checked to make sure. The last seven digits of the vehicle identification number are M159320 as stamped on the block. This is absolutely the numbers matching engine. I believe the turbo 400 transmission, and the 4-barrel quadrajet carburetor to be the originals as well. I checked the casting numbers, and they are 396021 F, so to the best of my knowledge this is the only block used for the Oldsmobile Rocket 455 engine in 1972. There was an engine fire at some point, so the entire engine, and the wiring under the hood will need to be gone through. The rare original W/Z exhaust manifolds still look in good condition. Only 1,025 Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible's were made with an automatic transmission in 1972 making this 442 a very rare and highly sought after model. The U in the vin number proves that this car came from the factory with a Rocket 455. I have heard that less than 7% of these cars were U-code cars making this one even more rare and valuable. I had a heart attack this past December, so although this would be a great car to restore, I feel that I have to be realistic and thin out my collection. This 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible is a very unique car to have. Whether this model is a real 442 or a converted Cutlass Supreme it is still considered to be like a real 442 if it is converted properly. I'll give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S, and 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealership with the 442 option. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model for the last time in 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972. The OldsFaqs website makes the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme, since the 442 was an ordered option. Whether the car was factory ordered as a 442, or dealer installed, or a private owner installed all the 442 options, they are all considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 1972 442 convertibles have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door, and all 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door. This model comes with original factory 442 grilles. I saw no signs of this car ever being involved in any major accidents. This Olds has the awesome 442 sport wheel. There is also a power trunk release inside the glove box. It's very hard to find an original paint code 75 Matador Red Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible with its original Rocket 455 engine. I have not seen another U-code 1972 Matador red convertible in all of my nearly 40 years of collecting Cutlass and 442 models. This particular model was ordered with a dual gate shifter, but is not hooked up. The console with the dual gate shifter are both included with this sale. Everyone who knows these cars, knows that this color, and interior combination are the most popular, and most desirable. The convertible top will need to be replaced. The entire body will need to be restored, but all of the chrome is in pretty decent drivers quality condition. A lot of the chrome can be brought back to very nice condition with some polishing. The blue manufacturer decal is still present on the inside of the door jamb on the drivers door. The front bucket seats were reupholstered. There is brand new set of four carpeted floor mats, but the carpet will need to be replaced. This Olds sits on a set of four P225/70R15 inch B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A raised white lettered tires mounted on Super Stock II wheels painted to match the body color with all four center caps, and all four beauty trim rings. There is a 10 bolt rear-end, but I am unsure of the gear ratio. The undercarriage was undercoated from the factory, so it held up in decent condition and looks all original to me. I did not see any patchwork. The drivers floor could probably use a patch or a replacement pan to make it nice. There is a spot on the side of the passenger rear floor that looks like it could use a little patch. I haven't touched anything on the body or the undercarriage. The original trunk floor will need to be repaired as seen by the picture. I do believe this car is well worth the time and effort deeming its rarity. This convertible was ordered from the factory with the rare air conditioning option. None of the a/c is hooked up, but at least that option is available to whoever performs the restoration. The majority of people didn't order A/C back in the day, since they had the option to put the top down. It is always nice to at least have that option if the new owner would like. There are some little things missing on the car, but everything for these cars is available in nice reproduction aftermarket replacement parts. Basically, what you see is what you get! Most of these parts are also available at your local swap meets, such as a ram-air hood, and a whale tail. Otherwise a W-25 hood can be purchased for around $500, and a whale tail for around $250 at a wide variety of suppliers. This is a great way to make new friends!! The original dash pad is in nice shape, and I couldn't find any cracks anywhere. An original Oldsmobile AM radio is mounted in place, but not hooked up. The options include power steering, power disc brakes, and dual exhaust. The original owner's manual, emissions control systems warranty information, the consumer information pamphlet, the 1972 Oldsmobile New Vehicle Warranty, and the Protecto Plate are all included in the glovebox. The previous owner said that the mileage is correct, but I have no confirmation. These older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find, especially in this color combination. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass/442 Convertible with a Rocket 455, and air conditioning listed at $61,620 in high condition, which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. $39,910 in average condition, which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! They have the lowest condition value at $26,520 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car. The numbers don't lie! This Convertible is a very valuable automobile! Whatever this classic convertible sells for in this no reserve auction is a win/win investment for someone who wants to restore a high dollar classic. I have an open, clean, and clear title. I believe if someone took the time to do a frame-off restoration on this rare convertible, it could easily do in the $50,000-$60,000 range if it were run at a live auction. These 70's muscle cars have incredible investment potential, and have been referred to as rolling bank accounts. Remember, When the top goes down, the price goes up! This Oldsmobile is an investment that should continue to rise as these cars have shown to consistently escalate in value with each quarter. These GM A-Body muscle cars are the finest handling cars I have ever driven. This car is for the guy or girl that always wanted one back in high school, or would make a fantastic father and son, or mother and daughter project. The end result will be very satisfying! eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant
Wed, 18 Jun 2014If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.
GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:

Thu, 13 Nov 2014The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.
