AT AUCTION HERE IS MY 1972 CONVERTIBLE OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME. THIS CAR WAS FOUND IN A BARN WHERE IT HAD BEEN SITTING SINCE THE 80'S, CLEAN, CLEAR TITLE, LAST TITLED IN 1977! I REALLY LIKE THESE CARS AND BOUGHT THIS ONE WITH THE INTENTIONS OF RESTORING IT BUT HAVE TOO MANY OTHER PROJECTS AND OTHER THINGS GOING ON SO I'VE DECIDED TO SELL THIS CAR AND PUT THE MONEY INTO MY 1972 CONVERTIBLE CHEVELLE. THIS CAR DOES RUN AND DRIVE WELL, I JUST SPENT A BUNCH OF MONEY HAVING THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT, REPLACING THE WHEEL BEARINGS, NEW MASTER CYLINDER, NEW WHEEL CYLINDERS, NEW CALIPERS, NEW BRAKE SHOES, NEW BRAKE PADS, NEW ROTORS, DROPPED THE GAS TANK AND CLEANED IT OUT, BLEW OUT THE FUEL LINES, HAD THE CARBURETOR REBUILT, NEW SPARK PLUGS, AND SWAPPED OUT THE POINTS DISTRIBUTOR FOR AN ELECTRONIC IGNITION WITH NEW PICK UP MODULE AND COIL. EVERYTHING ON THE CAR WAS WORKING WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE A/C WHICH IS COMPLETE, JUST NO BELT, COMPRESSOR MAY BE BAD, MAYBE NOT, I NEVER CHECKED IT, BUT THE A/C SYSTEM IS COMPLETE! I ALSO HAVE THE ORIGINAL DISTRIBUTOR AND AIR FILTER REMOVED FROM THE CAR THAT GOES ALONG WITH IT. CAR WAS BOUGHT LOADED WITH OPTIONS WHICH INCLUDE: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, POWER TOP, POWER WINDOWS, AIR CONDITIONING, BUCKET SEATS, CONSOLE, FLOOR SHIFTER, POWER DISC BRAKES, AND POWER STEERING. ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THE CAR IS THE COLOR COMBINATION, ORANGE WITH WHITE TOP AND INTERIOR, THE COLORS REALLY STAND OUT AND DEMAND ATTENTION! ORIGINAL 350 OLDS ROCKET ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION BOTH PERFORM WELL, AND OPERATE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS, NO NOISES, RATTLES OR ANYTHING. AS CAN BE SEEN IN THE PHOTOS THE CAR NEEDS SOME RUST REPAIR ON THE REAR QUARTER PANELS ON BOTH SIDES, THERE IS A LITTLE RUST IN THE TRUNK PAN, IT HAS BEEN PAINTED WITH POR15 AND LOOKS PRETTY GOOD, I CONSIDERED BEDLINING IT, IT COULD BE LEFT ALONE, OR DO AS YOU WISH, I AM PICKY BUT I WOULD NOT REPLACE THE PAN. THE FLOOR PANS LOOK ALMOST GALVANIZED FROM UNDERNEATH AND ARE VERY SOLID. I DID NOTICE WHILE UNDER THE CAR THAT THE EXHAUST HAS BEEN PATCHED AT SOMETIME, WHICH DIDN'T BOTHER ME AS I PLANNED ON INSTALLING DUAL EXHAUST ANYWAY. THE FRAME IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE WITH NOTHING MORE THAN THE USUAL SURFACE RUST THAT YOU WOULD EXPECT. THE SEATS NEED RECOVERED, NEEDS NEW CARPET, AND A NEW CANVAS FOR THE TOP, DOOR PANELS ARE PRETTY NICE BUT CARPET AT BOTTOM NEEDS REPLACED, DASH IS NICE, NEEDS A NEW GLOVE BOX LINER, ALL GAUGES WORK AS THEY SHOULD, EVEN THE BUZZER FOR THE KEY SWITCH WORKS! I HAVE THE ORIGINAL OLDSMOBILE SPORT WHEELS THAT CAME ON THE CAR BUT THE TIRES ARE DRY ROTTED BAD SO I PUT SOME OLD ALUMINUM WHEELS AND TIRES ON SO THAT THE CAR COULD BE MOVED AROUND, THEY ARE TOO BIG FOR THE CAR SO THE FRONT ONES RUB WHEN TURNING DEEP. THE BUMPERS ON THE CAR HAVE SURFACE RUST AND COULD STAND TO BE RECHROMED OR REPLACED. WHEN I BACKED THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE TODAY THE POWER WINDOWS STOPPED WORKING, BOTH DRIVERS SIDE ARE DOWN AND BOTH PASSENGER SIDE ARE UP, PROBABLY A BLOWN FUSE, I WOULDN'T THINK ANYTHING WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ALL FOUR AT ONCE. I'LL TRY TO CHECK THEM OUT BEFORE THE AUCTION IS OVER. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE ASK PRIOR TO BIDDING. THIS WOULD BE A GOOD CAR FOR SOMEONE INTERESTED IN A DRIVER. WE HAVE DRIVEN THIS CAR AND IT DOES VERY WELL ON THE HIGHWAY. READY TO BE DRIVEN, ENJOYED, AND RESTORED TO WHATEVER LEVEL YOU DESIRE. THANKS FOR LOOKING.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Mon, 30 Jun 2014

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
