1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Convertible (not W30 And Not A Clone) on 2040-cars

Year:1972 Mileage:999999
Location:

Atlanta, Georgia, United States

Atlanta, Georgia, United States

I DO NOT HAVE A TITLE FOR THIS CAR.  I can only provide a notarized bill of sale.  In Georgia,  the DMV doesn't recognize the need for a title on a vehicle that is older than 30 years.  I can provide a photocopy of the original title, but the actual original piece of paper is gone :-(

This is a Matador Red 1972 Oldsmobile 442 with the small-block engine.

Engine:   The engine starts and runs very well at idle.  I haven't tested the power at more than about 1/2 throttle because I would fall off of the Dewalt reciprocating-saw case as mentioned before.  The engine was worked on for the previous owner who had it converted to a later model GM HEI distributor.  Because of that, the stock air cleaner wont fit on.  The original distributor is included with the car, and already has a Pertronix electronic ignition upgrade.  There is a new fuel pump on the engine.  The A/C compressor bracket is not bolted on correctly, but it is all there and the A/C system was still holding pressure. the last time I checked it.  This is the original engine for the car.

Transmission:   The transmission is working as far as I tested it in my drives around the block.

Body:   The body certainly has some rust, but it isn't an all-over kind of rust that you would see in a car that was driven on salted roads.  I would guess that this car was driven near the beach a few times, and picked up a little salt that attacked the places where stones had chipped the paint around the wheels.  This body is rusty compared to many Southern cars, but nothing like what I am used to from Northern cars that have rust everywhere.   I can take more pictures upon request.  The body is very straight.   I am not sure if there is any body filler or not, but I haven't seen ANY evidence of collision damage.  The rear bumper in the picture looks funny because it is not fully installed.  I put it on the body and only hand-tightened the bolts in order to take the pictures.  It was getting darker and there was a security guard that was about to tell me to move along from the area.  The windshield is in great shape with no cracks or scrapes from skeleton wiper blades.  The trunk lid works along with its lock.  The interior of the trunk has some rust, but only where the trunk carpet held moisture.  The hood and hood latch works but the very front of the hood has some dents.  I am including a bin of extra trim pieces that the previous owner had collected.

Convertible Top:   The frame is all there including the glass back window option.  The last time I checked, it moves back and forth with the electric switch and motor.  Obviously, the canvas part has completely rotted away.

Brakes:  The brakes feel amazingly good and stop the car.  There are some noises that would indicate to me that at least one of the front wheel bearings is not happy, but the car stops and has good pedal feel.

Interior:   The dashboard in this car does not have a crack in it!  The center console is not in terrific shape, but I have seen much worse also,   The top of the center console compartment is with the car, but is not mounted.  I did see that the speedometer was working.   The steering wheel is missing some pieces as shown in the pictures.  There are trim pieces on the dash that have come unattached.  This car will certainly need new floor pans before it can be driven safely.  The stock radio is not there.

Anyone is welcome to come inspect the car at my house in Atlanta, Georgia.   I will try to provide answers to any questions with extra pictures if necessary,  but please don't waste my time if you are not a serious bidder.

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.
