Stunning 1977 Mercedes Benz 450SL is available for sale.  Very, very gently used classic - under 45,000 original miles!  This beauty began its driving life in southern California belonging at one time to a foremost Hollywood movie camera provider.  Seller is the fourth owner of the car residing in Washington state where car has been pampered, babied, and garaged for the past four years.  Count on full-disclosure of all known information regarding this wonderful-to-own-and-drive car.

Sporting a bright and sunny yellow exterior, this car stands out in a crowd.  Unlike the much more common red's, black's, blue's, and grey's, this car gets heads turning!  Paint is not original but in excellent condition.  Matching hardtop in very good condition - some minor dents in perimeter aluminum at base where it meets the car.  Front chrome bumper has dime-sized dent (see picture); rear chrome bumper has scratches (see picture) - both are not glaring issues.  No body dents.  One small "bubble" on front left fender (see picture).  Convertible top is chocolate brown in EXCELLENT condition - may not be original.  It is like new, so vinyl windows are clear.  Beautiful color combination!

Interior is excellent - still smells new!  Non-smoking vehicle, beautiful and highly complementary "palomino" (tan) interior, original carpet, trim, seats, etc.  Best of all:  this car has all of the original functions and they all work:  radio, a/c, heat, clock - it's all original and they each work as they should.  This is rare, indeed!  Wipers, signals, electric windows - all in great working condition.  Seat stuffing in excellent condition and still comfortable.  Carpeting is clean, clean, CLEAN!  Passenger seat has small tear at top where seatbelt clasp dug in but it isn't noticeable and will not worsen.  Back seat in excellent condition as well.

Trunk is LIKE NEW and contains original tool box - complete.

Tires in very good shape as are stock chrome wheels.

Engine runs beautifully and strong.  Powerful response and great handling, too!  Starts up immediately and turns off without dieseling.

I am moving out of the country soon so car must find a new home!

This vehicle will be 36 years old next year.  Is it perfect?  No.  But it is beautiful, reliable, and very well cared for.  Will you enjoy owning it?  Yes - it is a piece of art yet fully functional.  It is so much fun to drive and who doesn't enjoy the attention one gets from being in a vehicle like this on the road?  PLEASE FEEL FREE TO MAKE AN OFFER!

Ecclestone wonders if F1's upcoming turbo V6s should get augmented sound [w/videos]

Mon, 08 Apr 2013

While every team on the Formula One grid is worried about making a good showing in this year's championship at the same time as they develop a brand-new car for next year's championship, Bernie Ecclestone and F1 circuit promoters have a different concern: how next year's cars will sound. The current cars use 2.4-liter, naturally-aspirated V8s that can reach 18,000 revolutions per minute and employ dual exhaust, next year's engine formula calls for 1.4-liter turbocharged V6s that are capped at 15,000 rpm and are constrained to a single exhaust outlet. Ecclestone and promoters like Ron Walker believe the new engines sound like lawnmowers and that the less thrilling audio will keep people from coming to races. If Walker's Australian Grand Prix really is shelling out almost $57 million to hold the race, every ticket counts. As a fix, according to a report in Autoweek, Ecclestone "suggests that the only way to guarantee [a good sound] may be to artificially adjust the tone of the V6s."
However, neither the manufacturers nor the governing body of F1, the FIA, think there will be a problem. Ecclestone fears that if the manufacturers "don't get it right" they'll simply leave the sport, but the only three carmakers and engine builders left next year, Renault (its 2014 "power unit" is pictured), Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari are so embedded that it would stretch belief to think they'd leave the table over an audio hiccup - if said hiccup even occurs. And frankly, these issues always precede changes to engine formulas, as they did when the formula switched from V10 to V8; fans, though, are probably less focused on the engines and more on the mandated standardization of the sport and the spec-series overtones that have come with it.
No one knows yet what next year's engines will sound like, but we've assembled a few videos below to help us all start guessing. The first is an engine check on an Eighties-era John Player Special Renault with a 1.5-liter V6 turbo, after that is Ayrton Senna qualifying in 1986 in the Lotus 98T that also had a 1.5-liter V6 turbo, then you'll find a short with a manufactured range of potential V6 engine notes, and then the sound of turbocharged V6 Indycars testing last year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Any, or none of them, could be Formula One's future.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

Fri, 22 Feb 2013

Make way for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG, the most wonderfully preposterous car I have ever driven.
There is absolutely no reason why any two-seat roadster should be fitted with a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 developing 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, but I sure am glad that Mercedes-Benz doesn't see things that way.
Drop into the leather-lined cockpit of this $213,145 provocateur, floor the accelerator pedal as I did over and over again, and 60 miles per hour falls in a traction-limited 3.9 seconds. Top speed has been electronically held to 186 mph (this apparently saves Gulfstream jet owners from embarrassment). Forget the SL550 and SL63 AMG, the valets will trip over themselves attending to the tycoon driving this thoroughbred - it's the real deal.

Brabus to storm Geneva with 800-hp version of Mercedes SL65 AMG

Wed, 27 Feb 2013

At no point during our recent drive of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG did we ever think, "You know, this thing sure is slow." After all, Merc's range-topping SL comes fitted with a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 capable of sending 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. But just in case you're still all "meh" about what the SL65 throws down, Brabus will gladly come to your rescue with this, the 800 Roadster.
As its name suggests, the 800 Roadster ups the V12's power figures to 800 horsepower and - wait for it - 1,047 pound-feet of torque. Don't get too excited, though - that torque number has been electronically limited to a measly 811 lb-ft since, you know, the transmission would probably explode if you tried to put the full force through it. Nevertheless, these represent increases of 79 hp and 73 lb-ft over the standard SL65, and that means the 800 Roadster can shoot to 62 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds - two-tenths of a second quicker than the Merc its based on. More impressively, hitting 124 mph takes just under 10 seconds, and the droptop will finally top out at an electronically limited - limited! - 217 mph. Holy smokes.
To manage all of that speed, Brabus has engineered a special carbon fiber aero kit that reduces lift, and a unique control module for the SL65's active body control suspension lowers the ride height by one full inch. The 800 Roadster rides on new 20-inch wheels, and a unique limited-slip rear differential was added, featuring a 40 percent locking rate that further enhances performance when you're attempting to control the beast at its limits. Interior upgrades include new leather and alcantara surfaces throughout the cabin, including a leather-clad trunk.
