Next Mercedes S-Class stretching into this 600 Pullman limo

Fri, 15 Mar 2013

To the concern of nobody in particular, Mercedes-Benz will not be re-upping its Maybach line of ultra-luxury limousines. No, instead the German automaker will be stretching its already roomy S-Class, to make this upcoming 600 Pullman version of the decked-out beast.
The car in our new gallery of spy shots is sporting beefy B-pillars and a massive set of rear doors that should allow perfectly graceful ingress and egress from what is likely to be a palatial rear space. (In one photo we can even see a long-wheelbase S-Class in line with the new Pullman, handily exhibiting the size of the new variant.) The exterior modifications are otherwise obscured, though we can guess at revised front and rear fascia and lighting elements, based on both end being heavily taped for these test runs.
It's a good bet that the Pullman will make use of M-B's twin-turbocharged V12 engine, though sources indicate that a hybrid version might eventually be in the offing, as well.

Man makes record-setting drive across the US in 28 hours, 50 minutes

Fri, 01 Nov 2013

Records, as the say, are made to be broken. Whether that's cramming the most hot dogs down your gullet, running a faster mile, or yes, driving across the United States, odds are that there's someone out there wants to eat more, run faster or drive harder. Speaking of that last example, the record for driving from a set location on the east coast, in particular the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, CA, has been one that has fascinated gearheads since a guy named Cannonball Baker made the trek from New York to LA in 53 hours, 30 minutes, in 1933.
The competition saw its glory days when Car and Driver's Brock Yates came up with the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (more affectionately known as the Cannonball Run), although the record was most recently set by Alex Roy and his 32-hour, seven-minute trek behind the wheel of a BMW M5 in 2006. Now, there's a new champion, who made the trip from east to west in a scarcely imaginable 28 hours and 50 minutes, behind the wheel of a 2004 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG. That's works out to an average speed of 98 miles per hour over the course of 2,813.7 miles.
His name is Ed Bolian, and Jalopnik has a writeup of the epic voyage that details everything from the history of the Cannonball Run to Bolian's preparation and trouble finding co-drivers, to the trip itself. It is well worth a read.

Mercedes mulling Renault-based entry-level X-Class?

Sun, 17 Mar 2013

Somewhere in between the Smart brand and the all-new A-Class (pictured above), Daimler is said to be readying a smaller entry-level product for the Mercedes-Benz brand to compete with models like the Audi A1. According to AutoBild, Mercedes-Benz will get a new hatchback based on a platform from its recent partnership with Renault-Nissan, and it could be called the X-Class.
Expected to debut by 2018, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class could be offered in sedan, hatchback and crossover variants, and it would likely have a starting price below the $20,000-euro mark. Power would come from either a 1.0-liter inline three-cylinder engine or a 1.5-liter inline-four, and the car would likely be built in a low-cost nation in order to make the financials work. Wearing the Mercedes-Benz name, the X-Class would have to exhibit more distinguishable luxury and styling to set itself apart from the models that helped provide its underpinnings.

DESCRIPTION
As the collector car market goes up and down, some special vehicles prove that a down economy just doesn’t apply to them the same as others. The Mercedes Benz 280SL roadster, or Pagoda, is definitely one of those vehicles. It has been on a soaring price increase over the last 5 years that is truly remarkable! And for good reason! When one looks at infamous Mercedes autos of the past, such as the SSK, 500K, 300SL Gullwing and roadster, you can easily find beautiful cars from each decade that has become a multi 6-figure investment. This is why many investors who have missed their opportunity have turned their attention to the 1970’s generation of Mercedes SL’s! These stunning cars offer superb design, increased driver refinements, and better performance to their owners making them not just excellent investment choices to hang on to, but wonderful cars to drive on today’s roads!

The St. Louis Car Museum is very excited to offer this 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SL Pagoda roadster finished in its original code correct Signal Red (568 H) over Parchment MB Tex interior and new black soft top! This car is simply gorgeous! Having only 4 estimated owners from new, it was preserved the way you only dream all cars could be! It began life in Northern California and made its way to Southern California by 1973. It was purchased by its second owner in May of that year and stayed in their care for the next 28 years! Moreover, this particular car was serviced by only Independent Mercedes Benz service centers the entire time! This includes all C, D, & E services that are fully documented in receipts that will be included. This vehicle has never been involved in an accident, and was professionally restored in 2001. The exterior paint, complete interior upholstery, carpet, dash & console wood were refinished, exterior chrome was re-plated, exterior emblems & mirror replaced for new, and all weather stripping window felts replaced. From the correct front fender guide marks to the near perfect pan in the trunk, it all shows as a testament to the impeccable care this vehicle has received over the years! Options include USA version VDO gauges, 4-speed floor shifted automatic transmission, Frigiking air conditioning, Becker Europa II AM/FM Stereo radio, matching hardtop with garnish moldings, outside rear view mirror, and power steering!

This car will come with service history back to 1973 with records showing yearly fluid flushes, chassis lubrication, new king pins, brakes, tires, fuel filters, air filters, repacked wheel bearings, spark plugs and points, accessory belts, and more! The head was rebuilt with reconditioned valves, all new exhaust & intake valve guides with seals at 93,706 miles. Compression across all cylinder measures 150-155 psi. Newer BF Goodrich 1” whitewall tires have approximately 1,000 miles on them, and a brand new correct, complete Mercedes Benz exhaust system was installed in 2009. Chances to purchase cars surviving in this condition are growing extremely difficult! This car may not be perfect, but we feel it is very close! It will also come with a folding hardtop rack, hardtop storage cover, original Mercedes Benz tools in cloth bag, original rubber trunk mat, and owner’s manual & books! Act quickly; the world market is definitely waiting for these opportunities as well! Please call with any questions!
