1970 Mercedes Benz 280SL, Driving project car, convertible with hard top. It has an auto trans and IS NOT equipped with AC.
The good: Engine runs well, starts right up, with no weird engine noises such as valve clatter, worn rod or main bearings, no oil smoke from exhaust. Engine idles well and cool, does not run hot or overheats. The transmission shifts well with no slipping. The engine, radiator, transmission, power steering do not leak oil. The differential is quiet with no pinion or bearing whine when driving. The differential is moist on the bottom, it doesn't leak oil onto the floor but has some moistness that has accumulated. The brakes do not leak and the car has a good firm pedal with good braking power. Exhaust has been replaced with a stainless steel exhaust system. All the gauges work. The chrome trim is in decent shape as well. It is a to owner car and comes with the original dealer invoice and some other documentation as well. There is no rot on the lower edges of the doors, or at the front and rear shock towers.
The so so: The body and interior are fair, there are no signs the car was ever in an accident. The car has dings and touch ups mainly to the right door and right rear quarter panel (see photos). The paint has flaked off at various spots on the body and a couple of these have some surface rust ( I photographed each one). The trunk floor has some surface rust, there are no holes going through the trunk floor. The interior is fair as well, it's not horrid however it's not going to win any shows either.
The bad: This car needs floors, the floor sections on both sides are pretty much gone (see photos). The inner rocker panel on the driver side toward the rear wheel well looks pretty bad. It is hard to tell exactly where the rockers are good, where they are bad, however just assume that both right and left rockers should be replaced as do the entire floor sections. This is not a job to do in your back yard unless you have experience and tools to tackle this. I would also like to add that the estimate on labor I received to repair the floors and rockers was 50 hours plus the cost of the panels. The sheet metal is available from various MB suppliers like K&K manufacturing and  even the MB dealer.
The car is available to see in the evening. Message me with any questions.

Mercedes A45 AMG in downhill battle with slipstream skateboarder

Mon, 30 Sep 2013

We're told it takes "performance, control and expression" to pilot a longboard skateboard down a mountain road, and that those happen to be the same values embodied in the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG. That's how the two came to be combined in a black-and-white short film called Silver Slipstream.
There's no talking, no engine note and no color, just some music, a 'boarder and a car on a long cruise down the Franschhoek Pass in the Western Cape of South Africa." Despite that, it's actually a pretty entertaining video of the latest Mercedes-Benz hot hatch married with extreme sports. You can watch how it all goes down in the video below.

Carlsson turns Mercedes-Benz SLK into 610-HP hill-climb clawer

Mon, 28 Jan 2013

Carlsson's race-tuned versions of the Mercedes-Benz SLK have been taking checkered flags for years, and we won't be surprised if its SLK 340 hill climber fares any different. Developed by multiple German and Swiss hill climb champion Reto Meisel, the carbon-bodied SLK 340 with lightweight brakes and a closed underbody weighs 1,716 pounds. Propelling that tiny bit of weight is a 3.4-liter V8 from Judd with 610 horsepower, and it rolls on 18-inch wheels shod in Avon tires.
It will debut at the Geneva Motor Show before beginning its racing campaigns in the summer. This one won't just tear up roads in Europe, though - Meisel says he plans on bringing it to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The press release below has more details.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 Bluetec gets 33 mpg, priced from $38,950*

Tue, 30 Apr 2013

It's been more than a year since we first saw the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 Bluetec unveiled at the 2012 New York Auto Show, but it looks like the compact diesel crossover is finally starting to roll into dealerships. Those wanting to buy a diesel GLK will only have to pony up an extra $1,500 over a base, gas-powered GLK350, as the GLK250's starting price is listed at $38,590 (*not including $905 destination charge).
The turbocharged 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel produces 200 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, and Mercedes-Benz has also provided some fuel economy numbers for this model, with claimed EPA estimates of 24 miles per gallon city and 33 mpg highway. There is no listing for the GLK250 on the EPA's website yet, but the figures represent significant increase over the GLK350's lackluster 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway figures, which are for the rear-wheel drive model. The GLK250 comes standard with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system - a $2,000 option on GLK350 - meaning that if you want an all-wheel-drive version of the 2013 GLK, it's actually cheaper to opt for the diesel model. Head over to the Mercedes-Benz site for the full 2013 GLK-Class configurator.
