Up for auction today is this 1984 Mercedes 380SL (it is badged as a 560SL) that is mildly modified and has such additions as Euro Headlights, Nardi Steering Wheel, AMG style side skirts and front spoiler, rear spoiler and Kaizer 17" Chrome Rims. Tires are a matched set of Falkens and are in very good shape. It has a new top however it has a couple cuts (pictured) from some local idiots. Overall it is in good shape and has a low 83K miles showing on the odometer. Interior is good, leather seats are in great shape, rear seats are good, the carpets could use a nice scrub. The woodgrain laminate has seen better days but this is a common problem that is easily fixed. Exterior is good, there are a couple rust bubbles (pictured) but overall the car is exterior is solid and straight. Paint is good, needs a wax. The rear bumper has minor damage (pictured). Now for the bad: My mechanic says he cannot thread one of the spark plugs as there is nothing to grip it with, it turns out the previous owner must have tightened too much or tried to put the wrong size plug in and now it is stripped and the head broken in that area. So at the minimum it will need a head on the right side, possibly more as once he told me that I no longer had any interest. So, this is a very nice little project for someone that wants a an older SL to drive around in. No reserve, it is for sale locally  so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Please email me with any questions, local pickup or I can dleiver for a fee if within a reasonable distance. Otherwise shipping is up to the buyer.

Next Mercedes-Benz GLK to get AMG variant? Not likely...

Fri, 15 Mar 2013

If you think Mercedes-Benz will slap an AMG badge on anything with wheels, think again. Word has it the German manufacturer will not offer buyers a performance version of the GLK, with Tobias Moers, director of AMG vehicle development, saying that he doesn't see a market for the car. That's not to say the picture won't change in the near future, however. According to CarAdvice.com, AMG is keeping a close eye on the arrival of the Porsche Macan.
"Maybe there will be a change in the market when the Porsche [Macan] comes up," Moers said, "but right now, no."
The real hitch in the giddy-up seems to be cost. Moers says developing the machine into something worthy of an AMG would represent "a huge investment." We can't exactly argue with that. Fortunately, AMG buyers have plenty of Mercedes-Benz models to choose from.

Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept gets mobbed in China

Sat, 20 Apr 2013

If the reception it received at the Shanghai Motor Show is any judge of marketplace acceptance, Mercedes-Benz has a hit on its hands in the form of the GLA Concept. And we can understand why - we're quickly becoming fans of Mercedes' recent styling language, as defined by new models like the CLA and this GLA Concept.
The big news on the exterior front are the headlamp clusters, which have frickin' laser beams attached to their foreheads embedded inside that are capable of projecting videos and images on a screen. Plus, a pair of video cameras are mounted on the roof that can be used to capture driving excitement or removed and taken with you. How cool is that? We just hope they have a substantial locking mechanism to prevent would-be thievery...
If the exterior is mostly ready for production, with a few of the more outlandish elements moved to the trash bin - like, for instance, laser-beam headlamps and removable action cams - the interior is a true custom job that screams concept loud and clear. There are all kinds of jewel-like finishes inside, along with transparent surfaces showing what looks like metal latticework underneath and some awfully thick looking leather with massive exterior stitching done by hand similar to what you'd find on a baseball glove.

Aston or Bust? Maybach's fate to be decided next month

2011 Maybach 62 - Click above for high-res image gallery
What will become of Maybach? That question has been rattling around the halls of Daimler headquarters in Stuttgart for some time now. But all questions will be answered, and answered soon: according to reports, the German automaker is currently evaluating prototypes and propositions for its top-end marque, and will make its decision next month.
So, what are the options? On the one hand, Daimler could kill the Maybach brand altogether. It was a notion ill conceived and even more poorly executed, taking an old platform and building a new flagship atop it. In that way, it was sort of like the Chrysler Crossfire, only far more costly to both the buyer and manufacturer. On the other hand, Daimler could opt for the long-time-coming proposition of contracting the production (and possibly much of the development) of a new generation of Maybachs to Aston Martin.
