Looking for one of the very best Mercedes Diesel cars ever?  Read on!  I am selling my very special 1991 Mercedes S-class, W126 short wheel base 350SD.  Let's start with the most important thing- the engine.  If you are familiar with this model Mercedes, you know the original 3.5 litre engine had a bad reputation for bending connecting rods and causing headaches for their owners.  To eliminate that problem, I built a 3.0 litre, OM603 engine from a 1987 model year M-B.  This engine was completely taken down and the best of everything was used to build this engine.  It has a brand new #22 cylinder head, rebuilt turbocharger, Bosch certified rebuilt fuel injection pump, all new Beru glow plugs, in short, everything!  This engine runs beautifully, starts instantly down to 10F with no block heater. I have 20k miles on the rebuild.  I have all the receipts, and photo documentation on the rebuild.  This Mercedes always gets a solid 30mpg combined driving, and incredible number for such an impressive car.

All new OEM hoses, fuel lines, Behr radiator, engine and trans mounts.  New Lemfoerder flex discs, new drive shaft carrier bearings, new trans cooler lines, parking brake cables, sway bar links, all new tires, the list goes on.  The transmission was rebuilt 50k miles back and shifts flawlessly.  I completely serviced the transmission 20k miles ago, at the same time I did the engine.  This car does not leak oil, and is the mechanically the very best there is.

Now for the car.  The 1991 350SD was the lowest production (rarest) of the W126 series Mercedes Benz (only 618 built), and what I think is one of the best automobiles ever built.  1991 was the last year for the 126, and it is considered to be the last of the big Benz cars that can be easily and well maintained without going broke.  Note that this is an SD, not an SDL.  Most of the 126 diesels were the long wheel base cars, which look and feel ponderous compared to the SD short wheel base version.  This car is in excellent condition, and has no rust!  It is as solid as the day it was built.  It is finished in the original Arctic White, and has had some touch up in a couple spots to keep it looking its best.  I also installed a set of original Bosch European headlights, far better in appearance and lighting than the original U.S. units.  Euro taillights installed too.

The car does need its air conditioning repaired, new rear shocks and the bolster on the driver's seat back needs to be repaired.  I found a used blue leather seat cover from a passenger side seat will fit, and not have the bolster wear.  Of course, new leather seat upholstery is available too.  The sunroof works in both modes, the cruise control works, the vacuum locks work fine (oh yeah, I installed a brand new Pierburg vacuum pump during the rebuild).

The navy blue interior is really very nice, the carpeting in excellent condition and there is a new set of OEM Mercedes blue floor mats that I have never put in the car.  The blue dashboard is in perfect condition, with no cracks anywhere.  The wood is in nice condition, and I have refreshed all the console switches.  If you have looked at these cars before, you know the switches come loose from the console wood and "sink" away.  I have repaired this and everything is nice and tight, looks and feels as it should. This car is equipped with dual airbags, and also has a Kenwood stereo with a CD player and remote.  The stereo has an Alpine amplifier, all 8 new cabin mounted Boston Acoustics speakers and a Boston trunk mounted sub-woofer.  Needless to say, the stereo is awesome!

Please contact me with your questions, this is a special car.  I built it to keep, but my plans have changed.  This car was nearly $70,000 when new, and equal to if not better than anything Rolls or Bentley had to offer, and got 30 mpg too!

Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG shows up to fight the hottest hatches [w/videos]

Wed, 13 Feb 2013

Fun coincidence. On the same day that Audi announces the unveiling of its new S3 Sportback at the Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz steals the spotlight by confirming that the all-new A45 AMG will also receive its official debut early next month. Starting life as the entry-level A-Class hatchback, the A45 AMG gets the full AMG treatment, which includes numerous performance, handling and styling upgrades.
Under the hood sits an AMG-tuned 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 breathing through a sport exhaust system helping the five-door produce 360 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired to a seven-speed AMG dual-clutch transmission and power is sent to the ground using 4Matic all-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz says that the A45 AMG will be able to accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in under 4.5 seconds and it will have a top speed of 155 mph; in the land of hot hatches, it doesn't get much hotter than that. For added performance and handling, AMG has retuned the A-Class' suspension and steering systems and equipped The A45 with a three-stage stability control system that is specific to this car.
Surprisingly, the exterior styling of the A-Class was already sporty enough that the new model doesn't receive too many changes to become the A45 AMG. The biggest alterations include black accents to the chin spoiler, rocker panels and mirror caps, black wheels with red-painted brake calipers and rectangular dual exhaust outlets. Inside, it doesn't take a trained eye to spot the differences. The flat-bottomed sport steering wheel and the numerous red accents throughout the cabin (including the seatbelts!) really help to make this AMG interior stand out; front passengers will also get sport bucket seats that appear to be more than supportive enough for even the most spirited driving conditions.

Watch this perfectly nice Mercedes get crushed by a front-end loader

Mon, 25 Mar 2013

In a world where the YouTube hoax continues to thrive, it's hard to know what to think of this little vid, but here are the facts as we know them: a coupe that looks like a first-generation Mercedes-Benz CLK gets crushed by a giant front-end loader. There you have it.
Our questions arise in the aftermath - we know industrial resource machinery is heavy, but the Benz gets squashed so flat we wonder if someone's trying to play a joke on us. We hear that the white coupe may have been the heavy-equipment operator's foreman's car, but who knows? The on-camera interview seems awfully conveniently placed, yes? See for yourself in the video below and then leave us your thoughts in Comments.

Mercedes takes VW Westfalia Camper idea upscale with new Marco Polo

Wed, 09 Jul 2014

Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz revealed the new V-Class. Slotting in below the popular Sprinter, the new V-Class replaced both the Viano and Vito upon its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. But Mercedes isn't quite done with it just yet. At the upcoming Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, Germany, Mercedes will reveal the Marco Polo - a versatile, stylish and decidedly contemporary take on the classic camper van.
Named after the famous Italian explorer, the Marco Polo was converted by Westfalia, an outfit which you might more closely associate with classic VW camper vans but which Daimler absorbed over a decade ago. Offering, according to the press release below, "a maximum of opportunities to be independent, free and spontaneous," the Marco Polo sleeps four thanks to the rear bench that electrically folds flat into a bed and the second berth under the pop-top. The flexible interior is decked out like you'd expect a modern Mercedes to be, with ambient LED lighting as well as wood, metal and piano black trim.
It's got an onboard kitchenette with two gas burners, a sink and fridge with a 10 gallons of fresh water and an even bigger waste tank. All that gear is shlepped around by a choice of four-cylinder turbodiesel engines ranging in output from 136 to 190 horsepower. The relatively compact form boasts a turning circle similar to a full-size sedan and a height designed to fit into most garages and car washes. All of which just might make us reconsider the appeal of traveling by camper van.
