Very nice two-owner 1998 Mercedes-Benz E320 4matic station wagon with 89,651 miles. Black with tan leather interior; both paint and interior are in very good condition. AC, AM-FM cassette, PS, PB, roof rack, ABS, cruise control, alloy wheels, third row seat (so total seating capacity is seven), 66 cubic feet of room in the back with the rear seats down. The car rides well, handles well, runs well, and gets 20 mpg in town and 25 to 26 mpg highway. New front and rear brakes and tires at 61,000 miles.

This model is very highly rated by Consumer Reports; here is a quote from the CR Website:"The E-Class sedan and wagon have been among the best cars CR has tested. We particularly liked the all-around versatility of the pre-2003 E320 4Matic (AWD) wagon."

The good: two-owner, well-equiped as most Mercedes are, everything in good to very good condition, lots of room, very nice ride, just a very well designed and built car.

The bad: two minor accidents; one in 2000 that damaged the front and the second in 2011 that damaged the rear.  I can't speak to the details of the first accident, but the original owner kept the car for another nine years, so whatever happened must not have bothered him very much.  The second accident occurred while braking for an exit off a four-lane, limited access highway.  My car was struck from behind, and the damage was about $2,500 to repair.

Also, the AC compressor has a slow leak, but I just have the AC recharged periodically.  The right-side catalytic convertor is making some noise, but so far to seems to be functioning fine.  The last mechanical issue is the front drive shaft vibrates when turning to the left; again, the car runs fine and this does not seem to be a problem. I am not aware of any other issues with the car.

Edmunds ranks the best used cars for 2013

Sun, 15 Sep 2013

When people ask us what car we would recommend for them, it's usually not easy to answer. To make a useful recommendation we must consider which of the numerous vehicle segments fits their needs best, and then choose one of the many vehicles offered in each segment. For some people, new cars don't meet their expectations of value, because they lose so much of it the moment they are purchased and driven off the dealer lot. For them, there's always the used-car market, where great deals can be found, but cars' histories of reliability and maintenance records - and perhaps that Certified Pre-Owned warranty - become ever-important factors playing into purchase choice.
To help out, Edmunds has done us the favor of assembling a list of the best used vehicles money can buy, covering model years 2006-2011, according to what it considers the most important criteria when shopping for used autos: reliability, safety, value and availability. That means unreliable, unsafe, super-expensive or limited-edition models don't appear on the list, but instead cars from each segment that are more likely to satisfy the general population.
There are some real goodies on the list, including but not limited to vehicles such as the capable Honda Fit, the cultish Honda Accord coupe (which can be had with a 240-horsepower V6 and a six-speed manual transmission some years), and the powerful Chevrolet Corvette. While Edmunds' choice of the Volvo C70 for best used convertible baffled us at first (not that it's a bad car), it redeemed itself by stating that the Mazda MX-5 still is an unofficial top choice if you don't require more than two seats.

AMG-powered Aston Martins still years away

Mon, 16 Sep 2013

After flirting for several years, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin have finally tied the knot. Just don't expect to see any offspring to result from the union for at least three or four years.
This according to Auto Express, which spoke with Daimler chief Dr. Dieter Zetsche at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. AE reports that a new range of AMG-developed turbocharged V8s, transmissions and electrical components will make their way into the successors to the current V8 Vantage and DB9, but that these models are still a few years off.
Purists might balk at the thought of a Mercedes-powered Aston holding true to the brand's heritage. But while David Brown (for whom the DB range is named) may have steered clear of shoehorning in Detroit muscle into his cars, the entirety of the company's current range is powered by engines borrowing technology from Ford, and that arrangement seems to have worked well for Aston until now. And if you're still skeptical, look no further than Pagani and its AMG-sourced engines and you should have all the proof you need that the new relationship between Daimler and Aston could be a success.

Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept gets mobbed in China

Sat, 20 Apr 2013

If the reception it received at the Shanghai Motor Show is any judge of marketplace acceptance, Mercedes-Benz has a hit on its hands in the form of the GLA Concept. And we can understand why - we're quickly becoming fans of Mercedes' recent styling language, as defined by new models like the CLA and this GLA Concept.
The big news on the exterior front are the headlamp clusters, which have frickin' laser beams attached to their foreheads embedded inside that are capable of projecting videos and images on a screen. Plus, a pair of video cameras are mounted on the roof that can be used to capture driving excitement or removed and taken with you. How cool is that? We just hope they have a substantial locking mechanism to prevent would-be thievery...
If the exterior is mostly ready for production, with a few of the more outlandish elements moved to the trash bin - like, for instance, laser-beam headlamps and removable action cams - the interior is a true custom job that screams concept loud and clear. There are all kinds of jewel-like finishes inside, along with transparent surfaces showing what looks like metal latticework underneath and some awfully thick looking leather with massive exterior stitching done by hand similar to what you'd find on a baseball glove.
