Beautiful 1982 Mercedes 240D.  The best of the W123 cars in the best year!!  Pampered since new, as evidenced by the care and upkeep of both mechanical and cosmetic elements in this car.  I have owned several W123 cars but this was the first one with a manual transmission.  Big improvement over the automatics of this vintage.  This car is actually fun to drive and the shifter glides and clicks into gear just as it did at the factory over 30 years ago. The clutch is the most accommodating and smooth clutch I have ever experienced on ANY car, bar none.  It is not the least bit tricky.

Best Attributes:

- Totally ORIGINAL, thick, glassy M-B paint.  I have never owned a car this old that has had literally NO body work or repairs.  Somebody took a tiny bit of touch up paint to it around the door handles and leading edges of hood and fuel door several years ago and it is imperceptible.
- Original, un-chipped windshield
- Palomino M-B Tex interior reminds why these cars are unmatched in quality...covers are good, no holes or tears, and the springs are perfect.
- Original German loop carpet is like new.
- Engine recently serviced, running like a top!
- Excellent Michelin tires with approx. 30,000 miles remaining
- Interstate battery fires right up, even on frosty mornings
- All original door and window seals in excellent condition.
- Optional electric sunroof in perfect order.
- Wood looks great, and is stable, not cracking or warped.

Replaced in last 16 months:
- Complete OEM exhaust system (Eberspacher Muffler)
- New brake pads, turned rotors, new caliper on left front
- New master cylinder
- Numerous trim and cosmetic parts -- many hard to find -- such as right sun visor, pedal pads, OEM M-B floor mats, first aid kit cover (old one was sun damaged), shift knob, and others too numerous to mention.

Replaced in last 2 years:
-tie rods, struts, and steering gear...car drives and steers as it should, not like a 30 year old car!
-New Pioneer receiver with CD deck
-Blaupunkt speakers under grills on dash, size appropriate Pioneer speakers in rear.

Bad Stuff:
-Cruise doesn't work -- of course -- needs actuator
-A/C is not converted to R134 yet, but still blows COLD with R-12

If you've been looking for a nice, clean, drivable example of a 240D that will turn heads, impress your M-B snob types yet not break your piggy bank, this one is the one.  I hate to sell my little car.  I drive a totally bland VW Jetta TDI daily and I really enjoy taking a break from the monotony by taking this little Mercedes around town and imagining simpler times when this car was the epitome of automotive virtue and still considered a "luxury sedan!"   I bought it from a gentleman in South Carolina in July 2012 who chose to sell it because he'd bought a mountain cabin to restore and had moved on to another project.  Well, here I am in the same dilemma.  I too have a new house project and as much as I hate to let it go, I feel like it needs a new home.

As with ALL 30+ year old cars, this car is not new and has some cosmetic and/or mechanical imperfections.  I strongly encourage questions and requests for pictures to avoid any regrets if you win this auction.  I have never had a car deal go wrong, and I expect this one will go well, too.  Just take care of yourself by being inquisitive and I will be happy to tell you what you want to know in an honest and forthright manner.

As I am an individual and not a car dealer I do not ship cars.  I will be happy to meet you at either the Montgomery, AL airport or the Panama City Beach/North FL Beaches Int'l Airport with the car if you are the lucky bidder.  I will also be happy to coordinate pickup and loading of the car with a shipper of your choice.

I would not hesitate to drive this car across the entire U.S.A., so don't be afraid to come to balmy Alabama this winter and pick up your belated but much deserved Christmas gift to yourself.

Thanks for looking!

VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes

Sun, 06 Jan 2013

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S 4Matic [w/video]

Wed, 20 Feb 2013

Maybe you saw our recent blog snippet on a bunch of US journos getting pulled over in the middle of nowhere in Catalunya, Spain for driving a bunch of new 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG models. By all accounts, they weren't speeding - which makes me softly guffaw. I was there in that group, yet I had taken the more direct route into the mountains from Barcelona so that I could... well, so that I could go faster. No one hassled me and I had the Autovia all to myself. And it was the goodniks - the team players - who got nabbed because Spain had decided to suddenly enforce the never enforced "must carry an international driver's license" clause of the highway code.
The departing E63 AMG with 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque from its M157 5.5-liter biturbo V8 hasn't exactly been poorly received. It isn't as crisp as, nor as pleasantly evil as its C63 AMG kid brother, but we generally accept that the heavier and larger car will always feel, well, heavier and larger.
As part of the 2014 E-Class mid-cycle redesign, Affalterbach decided to give its E63 AMG more power and torque for the occasion. The base car now gives off 550 hp and 531 lb-ft, while the hotter S version I tested (formerly the AMG Performance Pack) produces 577 hp and 590 lb-ft. The other big novelty is that E63 sedans will be available with both rear- and all-wheel drive, while all US-spec E63 wagons will be 4Matic equipped.

First official shot of Mercedes S-Class Coupe leaks out

Mon, 10 Feb 2014

With the official debut for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe expected tomorrow, it shouldn't be a surprise that some clicky fingers have already managed to uncover an official image of the car before the unveiling. Outside of this sole image, though, there's precious little detail on the new car.
First posted by Autofilou and then picked up by WorldCarFans, the production S-Class Coupe isn't far off from the concept car we saw a few months back in Frankfurt. Like the concept, the leggy production model appears related, albeit distantly, to the S-Class Sedan. The hood and front fascia are longer and lower, befitting of a two-door, while the character lines in the profile are more pronounced. Obviously, the beltline and slim, B-pillarless greenhouse are coupe-only items. We can't see any details on the back of the car, although it does appear that the long hood has a correspondingly short rear deck.
We'll have all the details on the official replacement for the CL-Class when it makes its full debut tomorrow. Until then, what do you think of this lone image? Does it appear that Mercedes has got it right? In terms of design, where would you rank this with the departing CL-Class? Have your say in Comments.
