I'm on a quest to clear some of my projects that I just don't have time for. I purchased this Mercedes Benz 280 sedan in a small town in southwest Virgina. I have family in the area and the idea was to have it as a local car there when I go for family visits. I learned from the seller that the car had belonged to the wife of one of the local furniture factories. He had inherited the car, but had no use for it. I paid a grand for it. it was 100% stock. Odometer indicate 88K miles, but Ihave no idea how accurate or inaccurate that is. Mileage should be considered as unknown.
Still had the factory carb, which is a known problem with these cars. Rather than try to rebuild a carb that would always be a weakness, I purchased and had a mechanic install a Weber conversion. It's a great conversion kit, and a solid performing carb BUT the guy who installed it admitted (after the fact) that he really isn't a"carb guy", so the carb still needs to be dialed in. It idles perfectly and it runs at open throttle great. It's the transition between the two that it struggles with. Unless you really feather it, it dies. Supposedly an easy fix for someone that knows Weber carbs well. Unfortunately the car is located in a small town, and I haven't found anyone local I trust to deal with the carb.
I also have too many project cars (3 others besides the MB) and I need to simplify. So here are the details.
Body
- One small spot of rust behind front tire in the bottom of the fender. Quarter sized.
- On the hood there are two spots where the paint has separated from the sheet metal. It doesn't seem like rust, but just an adhesion problem.
- The car has been repainted at some point, but it had to be decades ago. Paint is badly oxidized, and the car needs a repaint.
- Both front and rear windshield seals need to be replaced, originals are dry and cracked. I have brand new seals and will include them with car.
- Chrome looks good, no dents at all on car.
- Trunk has some rust from the rear window seal leaking. Not too bad. Rare to find one of these cars without some rust in the trunk.
Interior
- Ivory MB-tex interior in nice shape, no tears.
- Seats could use new padding, the horsehair padding has hardened.
- Carpets are perfect!
- Dash has one fairly small crack, someone has replaced the dash speaker grill with a cloth cover.
- Highly desirable big ivory steering wheel has a few cracks but they are minor.
- Headliner has some water damage around leaking seals, but I believe it could be saved when tucked into new seals. 98% of it looks perfect.
- original Becker AM/FM still works, although mono dash speaker needs replacing.
- Manual windows all work perfectly, if a little stiff from lack of use
Mechanical
- Engine runs great and compression tests were solid.
- Has fresh plugs, cap, wires, and tune-up, does not smoke, not funny noises.
- Fresh oil and coolant change
- Transmission takes quite a while to shift up when accelerating, but if you check on the interwebs, you'll find that is the nature of the beast. No noises, no slipping.
- Has exhaust leak at rear muffler. I have a brand new original style muffler that will go with the car.
Suspension
- New tie rod ends, but now needs alignment to straighten steering wheel.
- Needs new shocks
- brakes are fine, and freshly bled.
- rear end seems fine, has fresh lube.
- The tires on it are old, but are usable. I have a set of four Michelin Harmony tires 185/70-14s that I can include. They are off my wife's car but still have many miles.
I paid $1000, and have over $2000 in receipts. With the carb tuned, I believe this could be a daily driver. My loss, your gain. Car is loacted in my Dad's garage which is 400 miles form me. I'll try to answer all questions, but snapping a specific pic will be problematic!

Brabus to storm Geneva with 800-hp version of Mercedes SL65 AMG
Wed, 27 Feb 2013At no point during our recent drive of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG did we ever think, "You know, this thing sure is slow." After all, Merc's range-topping SL comes fitted with a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 capable of sending 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. But just in case you're still all "meh" about what the SL65 throws down, Brabus will gladly come to your rescue with this, the 800 Roadster.
As its name suggests, the 800 Roadster ups the V12's power figures to 800 horsepower and - wait for it - 1,047 pound-feet of torque. Don't get too excited, though - that torque number has been electronically limited to a measly 811 lb-ft since, you know, the transmission would probably explode if you tried to put the full force through it. Nevertheless, these represent increases of 79 hp and 73 lb-ft over the standard SL65, and that means the 800 Roadster can shoot to 62 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds - two-tenths of a second quicker than the Merc its based on. More impressively, hitting 124 mph takes just under 10 seconds, and the droptop will finally top out at an electronically limited - limited! - 217 mph. Holy smokes.
To manage all of that speed, Brabus has engineered a special carbon fiber aero kit that reduces lift, and a unique control module for the SL65's active body control suspension lowers the ride height by one full inch. The 800 Roadster rides on new 20-inch wheels, and a unique limited-slip rear differential was added, featuring a 40 percent locking rate that further enhances performance when you're attempting to control the beast at its limits. Interior upgrades include new leather and alcantara surfaces throughout the cabin, including a leather-clad trunk.
Mercedes teams with Pebble for smartwatch tech
Tue, 24 Dec 2013Most automakers have realized by now that a good infotainment system is a must-have feature for many buyers, and have, as a result, invested increasing amounts of time and money developing these technologies. But some automakers are going above and beyond in-car entertainment and navigation technology by focusing on wearable technology as well.
Nissan has emerged as one such company, developing its own alternative to Google Glass and performance-oriented smartwatch. But Mercedes-Benz is also putting itself at the forefront of wearable tech - not by developing competing products to those designed by dedicated tech companies, but by working with them. The German automaker, as we recently reported, is developing its own app for Google Glass, and is now doing the same with smartwatches as well.
Set to be unveiled at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Mercedes has collaborated with Pebble Technologies to develop the Digital DriveStyle app. The system will display tell its wearer where the car is, whether the doors are locked and if it needs fuel. Inside the car it'll alert the driver to potential hazards coming up on the road, while making functions like re-routing the nav system, controlling the audio system or activating Siri that much easier.
Mercedes leads in US luxury car thefts
Wed, 31 Jul 2013Mercedes-Benz makes some fine automobiles. The Silver Arrow'd cars are so good, apparently, that thieves can't help but try to steal them. The German brand is at the top of the charts for luxury car thefts in the US, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, with New York City leading the way. (And those New Yorkers complain about Detroit being bad!)
The C-Class was the most stolen model, with 485 ganked between 2009 and 2012 in NYC alone, while the E-Class and S-Class (which also boasted the worst recovery rate, at 59 percent) both finished in the top ten. Following the C-Class was the BMW 3 Series and Infiniti G. Not surprisingly, each of these were the most common models in their respective lineups. Los Angeles and Miami are also prime hotspots for luxury car thefts, according to the Detroit News report.
While getting your car stolen is pretty awful, there was one inspiring statistic compiled by the NICB - the average recovery rate across the board was 84 percent, with the Cadillac CTS getting recovered 91 percent of the time.
