Up for sale, please find this ULTRA-RARE, ORIGINAL, rust-free, low-mileage 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220SEb.  This is one of the ONLY 220SE's in the US, equipped with Factory Fuel Injection. Full documentation and manuals since point of purchase, and service records from Mercedes Benz of Hollywood, California, and Auto Stiegler Mercedes Benz. Sale includes THOUSANDS of dollars worth of maintenance manuals, factory brochures, and advertising materials.

Personally imported by it's original owner, this car lived it's entire life in Southern California. All sales documents are there, and in German.  Numerous brochures and original shop manuals accompany the car at point of sale. It is truly rust-free.  Lovingly maintained and cared for by the same owner until 6 months ago, when old age (91!) forced the sale of the car. In storage since, and started twice weekly. The red vinyl interior is exceptional, with but a few very minor blemishes.  Drivers carpeting needs replacement. The chrome and glass are very good overall,  needing only minor attention. One repaint. The "Import" headlamps were installed at the factory in Germany. All motor and drivetrain are factory original equipment, with the top end of the motor rebuilt at 100k miles.

The car runs, drives, steers, and stops as it should, and cruises very comfortably at freeway speeds.  This car can be enjoyed as-is, or very easily brought to show and go level without bank-breaking investment.  It gets a lot of attention from knowledgable folks, and people of good taste.

Other than it's point of purchase in Germany, this car has lived ALL of it's Rust-Free Life (See Underside Photos!!) in Southern California.  It bears a Clean California Title, and it's original California Black Plates, which come with the car.

The first Fintails wore familiar 220, 220S, and 220SE badging. (The E stood for Einspritzung--fuel injection--while S signified the top-level models.) Powered by a carryover 2.2-liter in-line six (105 hp to 134 hp), they used much of the same chassis technology as their forebears, the Ponton-series 220s. Numerous revisions, however, including relocating the front dampers farther outboard and swiping the 300SL's transverse coil spring for the swing-axle rear, gave the Fintails groundbreaking handling abilities on par with some of the world's better sports cars.

The Fintails' importance to Mercedes-Benz cannot be overstated. They were the first in a long line of supremely capable Mercedes sedans--a tradition that continues today--and they're even more notable for their emphasis on safety at a time when occupant welfare generally wasn't a high priority. The Fintails were the first Mercedes-Benzes to have been extensively crash-tested, and they also incorporated front and rear crumple zones. The steering wheel and dash top were padded, the windshield was designed to pop out if struck from the inside, the rearview mirror was breakaway, and all switches were made from flexible materials. Even the widely panned vertical speedometer was believed to be safer; contemporary safety experts felt that the design heightened a driver's feeling of danger as the needle rose toward the top.Scoffed at as a ploy to appeal to Americans (which it was), the befinned sheetmetal now seems retro-nerdy cool. Fintails are fun to drive, the sixes love to play at the top end of the tach--so look for a manual--and the entire car was built to last. And they're affordable. In top-notch condition, the priciest examples (early 220SEs) command $20,000 to $25,000.
This car is for sale locally, and we reserve the right to end this auction at any time.  We welcome your inspection in Los Angeles.

Thanks for Looking!    Pete

Mercedes calls CLA 'best launch in 20 years' as it warns dealers of tight supplies

Fri, 13 Dec 2013

It's still in the early going, but it's looking more and more like the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA is a verifiable home run for the German brand. According to a new report from Bloomberg, the new small car isn't just widening the sales gap between Mercedes and BMW, it's attracting a new, younger breed of customers into the brand's showrooms. But that early success is straining supplies of the turbocharged four-door.
Dealers have been warned that the first half of 2014 will see limited supplies for CLA, with a letter to dealers indicating that "tight inventories and low days supply" will exist from February through June, despite the car's Kecskemét, Hungary plant running at full tilt.
"This is our best launch in 20 years," said Steve Cannon, the US boss for Mercedes. "The CLA has been a phenomenal success right out of the gate." The numbers certainly support that. We reported in early October that Mercedes moved 2,300 CLAs in its first week on sale, and now Bloomberg is saying CLA sales were almost singlehandedly responsible for Benz's November sales gains. Mercedes' annual sales are up 14 percent through the November, and it's enjoying a healthy 7,600-car lead over BMW.

Paul di Resta returns to DTM with Mercedes

Tue, 21 Jan 2014

Some drivers manage to make the transition from one form of motor racing into another, and some run into trouble. Take Paul di Resta, for example. The promising young Scottish driver dominated Formula 3 racing in Europe in 2006, then moved over to Germany's hugely competitive DTM touring car series where he finished second in 2008, third in 2009 and first in 2010. But things didn't go as smoothly for Paul - cousin to retired Indy champion Dario Franchitti - when he moved in to Formula One with the Force India team.
In three years on the grid, he failed to score a single podium finish. Little surprise, then, that Force India opted not to renew his contract for this season. Left without a ride, di Resta is now going back to DTM with longtime supporter Mercedes-Benz, testing the new C-Class touring car today in Portugal. It's good news for Mercedes, which is celebrating 120 years in motor racing this season and, with 2005 champion Gary Paffett also on board, can now count two former champions on its DTM roster.
We wouldn't count Paul out of F1 for good, though. When he won the DTM title four years ago, he was also moonlighting as Force India's test driver, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him pull similar double-duty with the Mercedes F1 team (or another Benz-powered outfit) this year before spring-boarding back into grand prix racing in the future. At 27 years old, he may not have been the youngest driver on the grid this year, but he's still got a good few years ahead of him.

2017 Aston Marin Lagonda could live on Mercedes M-Class platform

Tue, 29 Oct 2013

A few weeks ago, we brought you news from the launch of the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante that the British brand, which is formally known as Aston Martin Lagonda, was still planning on going ahead with a Lagonda-badged crossover. Now comes word that that vehicle could very well be based on a Mercedes-Benz M-Class.
When the first Lagonda Concept debuted at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, it sat on a Mercedes-Benz GL-Class platform, some four years before Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG deal was inked. And with that partnership, which will see Aston Martin gain access to AMG electrics and "bespoke, V8 powertrains," the opportunities for platform sharing are many.
Dr. Ulrich Bez, the boss of Aston Martin, told the UK's AutoCar, "I look at what Porsche is doing with the 911 as its core business and then it is able to do models like the Cayenne based on the Volkswagen Touareg. It is good business." We've said many times that we'll tolerate exotic CUVs and SUVs if it means keeping the beloved core models alive, which has been the case with Porsche. We see no reason Aston Martin wouldn't be able to do the same.
