Up for sale is a 1992 Mercedes 190E; I've it a couple months back and love it, but have to part with it to finish work on two other cars. Here's the breakdown...

GOOD:
- Sun roof, airbags, and all the standard late model Mercedes perks in one of their most compact, fuel efficient cars
- Minimal weathering (Body, gaskets, and electrical at 95% condition)
- Interior in near perfect condition (just one small tear in driver's seat)
- Wheels, chassis, and engine compartment in excellent condition
- New windshield, engine mounts, fuel & air filters, water pump, AC compressor, viscous fan, OVP relay and voltage regulator, and glass European headlights
- 167k miles (low for these cars, well maintained they run upwards of 300k)
- Good tires (5-8k miles left)
- Upgraded Alpine head unit/speakers, original MB audio deck in trunk, and XM Radio + iPod docks installed (center panel damaged though)

LESS GOOD:
- Suspension starting to creak (will need replacing within 10k miles, or sooner if you're frequently on rough roads)
- Dent in passenger quarter panel (paint intact, dent is barely visible)
- Idle air control is dirty/damaged or contacts somewhere in the fuel system are weathered (idles low, gets overgassed coming out of neutral, and occasionally stalls at hard stops or when cold-starting)
- Catalytic converter and exhaust hangers rusted (still functional though, and the underbody is otherwise in great shape)

Most problems are straightforward fixes, I just don't have the time to chase them down currently and the car is road-worthy without. Overall, this is a very clean and reliable car; I'll even drive to deliver within 500 miles of Charlottesville, Virginia (ZIP 22902) at a rate of $1.25 per mile.

$500 deposit due within 5 days of auction ending; I take personal and cashier's checks, money orders, cash, and VISA/Mastercard/Paypal (add 3%). Balance due within 14 days of the end of auction. Don't hesitate to contact with questions!

Race Recap: 2013 Japanese Grand Prix flips several scripts [spoilers]

Mon, 14 Oct 2013

Japan's Suzuka circuit is a great track that all the drivers love, but it doesn't usually provide the most thrilling, head-to-head racing. Where it does excel, however, is with surprises and "What just happened there?!" moments, and this year it was no different.
It started with Mark Webber in his Infiniti Red Bull Racing out-qualifying his teammate Sebastian Vettel for the first time this year. They were followed closely by Lewis Hamilton in the first Mercedes-AMG Petronas, the still-solid Romain Grosjean again outdoing teammate Kimi Räikkönen, Felipe Massa racing for another seat in Formula One and putting his Ferrari in fifth, then Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes, Nico Hülkenberg in the first Sauber, Fernando Alonso in the second Ferrari, and Räikkönen continuing to do himself no favors by qualifying tenth.
For the second year in a row, the lights going out was the cue to start the first corner action...

Daimler names Bernd Pischetsrieder to supervisory board

Mon, 14 Apr 2014

Some executives in the automotive industry stay with one company for their entire careers, while others bounce from one to the other, often leaving their indelible mark on each automaker at which they serve. Bob Lutz is certainly an example of the latter. So is Lee Iacocca, having presided over Ford and later charing the Chrysler board. Carlos Tavares was chief operating officer of Renault before being nominated as chief executive at PSA Peugeot Citroën. But as far as the Germans go, nobody's jumped from the leadership of one automaker to the next quite like Bernd Pischetsrieder - especially now that he's been named to the supervisory board of Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler.
An engineer by training, Pischetsrieder started his career at BMW in 1973, eventually rising to the office of CEO after twenty years. There he remained until 1999, only to be dismissed after orchestrating BMW's takeover of the Rover Group (of which only the Mini brand remains in the company's portfolio, the other brands having been sold off after his dismissal).
The next year he was named chairman of Volkswagen's Seat brand, and rose to the chairmanship of the entire Volkswagen Group two years later. Despite a largely successful four-year tenure (that gave birth, incidentally, to the Bugatti Veyron), disagreements with supervisory board chairman Ferdinand Piëch saw him leave the helm at VW AG, focusing his attention on the Scania truck division. He's since been touted as a potential chief executive for Opel and for Continental, but neither potential was apparently realized.

New Mercedes Unimog debuts to the cheers of little boys everywhere [w/video]

Sat, 27 Apr 2013

The Mercedes Unimog, the superhero villain of the off-road world that's just waiting to make the jump to Transformer, has been completely upgraded for its new generation. There are ten models, expanding the range and getting new designations across the traditional all-terrain series and the implement-carrier series. Panoramic cabins get more visibility, multifunction steering wheels and better dash clusters, improved HVAC and a three-mode central tire inflation system. Outside, there are new items like LED headlights and daytime running lamps in the bumper, roof-mounted windshield wipers and a front-camera monitor for the implement carrier.
The new engine lineup is compliant with Euro VI, featuring four- and six-cylinder BlueEfficiency engines putting out anywhere from 156 horsepower to 354 hp. Powerplant placement has also been tweaked, the chassis members getting a revised curve to place the engine a bit further back and lower, maintaining off-road clearance and lowering the Unimog's center of gravity. The new location of the engine means the cabin has more room, and the wheelbase is shorter. Combined with a higher turning angle, the Unimog has a smaller turning radius than before.
The implement carrier gets what's called a "synergistic traveling drive," the bonus being that drivers don't need to stop in order to use an attachment - a hydrostatic transmission works with the regular manual transmission at up to 31 kilometers per hour for seamless switching.
