For sale is a 1999 Mazda Protege ES (1.8L 4-Cyl engine) with manual transmission. Overall it is in fair condition.
The bad: The body has some rust (primarily around rear wheel wells) and couple small dents and scratches. The passenger sideview mirror can't be adjusted. The engine leaks some oil (which then falls onto a hot part of the engine and gets burnt up and kinda smells). The check engine light is on. There is a rattling noise when you go over bumps. The clutch slips at high rpms. The good: The car has low miles for a 15 yr old car. The engine runs well. The car drives well. Within the past few years the exhaust has been replaced, the starter has been replaced, the clutch has been replaced (though has some slippage issues), the transmission was replaced with a used transmission, and the battery is just a few months old. There have been other minor repairs but I don't remember what was fixed. This car is good for getting around town. I wouldn't recommend taking any long road trips with it though unless you get some work done on it, like getting the clutch fixed. It would make a good first car for someone or for someone to use until they can save up to get a better car. I have owned the car since 2010, I bought it used from a Honda dealership in Syracuse, NY. I am currently located in Champaign, IL. The title for the car is clean but is from NY state so keep in mind that when you purchase it you will have to transfer the title to IL. The Kelly Blue Book value is $1,353. I am asking for $1,200. |

Will the new Mazda Miata be available with multiple engines?
Mon, 01 Sep 2014At this point, the countdown until the launch of the all-new, fourth-generation 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata can be measured in hours until its September 3 unveiling as easily as it can in days. With the debut of such a highly anticipated model so close, the rumors about the new sports car are starting to boil over.
We recently heard that the new Miata would likely get a 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder with a six-speed manual, plus a decent drop in weight compared to the current gen. There's even the rumored possibility of a fastback coupe version sometime in the future.
Now, Australia's GoAuto is adding another dollop of speculation into the mix with the claim that there could be "potentially more engine options," according to Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders to the website. The more potent option would still be the 2.0-liter Skyactiv with a power bump from its current 167 hp to closer to 200 ponies. The other possible powerplant option would be a 1.5-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder taken from the upcoming Mazda2 replacement. This version would also ditch some of the MX-5's more premium features to cut the weight and the price slightly.
Mazda6 Skyactiv-D Racecar ready to bring diesel to Grand-Am
Tue, 15 Jan 2013It may not be quite as radical as some of the company's past rotary racers, but the new Mazda6 Skyactiv-D racecar does have a notable powertrain underhood: the automaker's brand-new clean diesel four-cylinder engine.
Three of these new diesel-powered Mazda6 racers will take to the track in the Grand-Am GX class of the upcoming 2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 26, with five drivers on each team. The car you see above, number 70, is sponsored by Mazda's longtime motorsports partner, SpeedSource.

China's FAW now building all three Mazda6 generations
Tue, 13 May 2014The Chinese auto market is one of the most interesting in the world to look at. Its automakers appear to still be figuring things out and remain open to experimentation. For example, at this moment, you can buy new copies of all three generations of the Mazda6 from showrooms there.
Mazda joint-venture partner FAW recently introduced the latest generation to China as the Mazda6 Atenza, according to Just Auto. Yet buyers still have the option of getting the previous generation as well, which is sold as the Mazda6 Ruiyi. Obviously, that isn't too remarkable - companies in the US have briefly sold two generations of the same nameplate simultaneously for brief points in the past, and the practice is much more common in developing markets. However, Chinese consumers still have the third choice, too - the first-generation model that dates back to the early 2000s, is still on offer, known simply as Mazda6.
While it would be hard to imagine selling three generations of the same models at once in the US, the idea is an interesting one. We enjoyed our long-term test of the latest generation, and the previous models weren't bad cars either, so provided there's a healthy difference in pricing and marketplace confusion is limited by differing names, we can see it working. If nothing else, it's a fascinating illustration of how broad China's developing auto market really is.
