1977 Lotus Esprit Base Coupe 2-door 2.0l on 2040-cars

Year:1977 Mileage:64000
Location:

New Orleans, Louisiana, United States

New Orleans, Louisiana, United States

Hand built in August 1977 and up for your consideration is number 390 of this iconic, storied automobile lineage. I purchased this car in Seattle from a Montana cowboy in about 1982. I am the third owner. It has never been in an accident of any kind. For the first 22 of our 32-year life together, the car was well maintained, driven daily, reliable despite it's reputation, and garage-stored, in Seattle, Malibu, South Mississippi and New Orleans.

In 2002, as I was selling my New Orleans house with a garage, I posted this Lotus on Ebay. I let the listing expire after I realized that the overheating problem I had recently experienced was a from blown head gasket. The headgasket was repaired in 2004, along with extraneous details to make the car ready for the auction blocks, which it was, but I wasn't. Delays, personal issues, time passed and the car sat outside. Then it had sat for too long, and it has been sitting ever since. The car was in perfect selling condition in 2004 but now it is a different story.

It is non-functioning. Consider it a complete restoration inside and out after not having been driven in 11 years and setting outside. I have the (dusty) engine cover (in photos) the original jack and mechanic's pouch, original spare, original owners' manual. and special order MOMA Lotus steering wheel.

Included in the sale are a portion of the parts manual, a too-large car cover, I have the original "Styled by Giugiaro" side emblem - that the car washers knocked off, and the book "Lotus Esprit" by Jeremy Walton.

I'm in New Orleans, the car is available for viewing except June 18, 19 and 20, and there may be a delay answering questions on those days.

Mississippi title and (expired) registration.

Emissions device is missing from the car.

Low starting price and no reserve.

Please enlarge all photographs. Again, photographs are overly encouraging.

The buyer is responsible for arranging pickup or shipping and cost thereof. I will assist the buyer any way I can.

On Jun-14-14 at 20:05:25 PDT, seller added the following information:

If the car is left uncovered, there is water infiltration during a rain. The carpet will be damp.  The car is missing the chrome-like plastic pieces on each side of the roof, perhaps this is the culprit, or maybe there is a leak around the door gaskets. There is no visible mold but the seat rails are corroded and one is broken.

Lotus suing former CEO Bahar over spending on homes, helicopters and watches

Mon, 03 Dec 2012

More details have come out about the legal suit and countersuit being contested between Lotus cars owner DRB-Hicom and former CEO of Lotus Dany Bahar. Bahar was brought in by Malaysian car company Proton in 2009 to turn Lotus around, and events during his tenure have made just about everyone wonder "What's going on?" That's not unusual - it can take a minute to figure things out when a new leader takes everything in a new direction - but in this case the clouds didn't clear quickly enough.
When the Malaysian government sold Proton to Malaysian auto supplier DRB-Hicom earlier this year, a forensic accounting team from Ernst & Young and The Rothschild Group started going over the books. Not long after, Bahar was suspended in June from his position and then fired. In his countersuit against DRB-Hicom, claims of lavish spending began to surface. Then the stories and leaks and rumors really began, the UK's Financial Mail reporting on more than one million pounds spent on private flights and home renovations, the New Zealand Herald talking about other executives sacked so that DRB could rearrange a 270-million-pound bank loan to Lotus, and rumors on forums about Bahar flying from his home in Norfolk to Hethel HQ and spending 30,000 pounds on motorsports books for his office.
In the latest Bloomberg report it is said that DRB-Hicom seeks 2.5 million pounds ($4 million US) from Bahar "for unauthorized expenses and overpaid salary and bonuses," including the purported expense of 3,000 pounds on watches for company managers. DRB-Hicom also says Bahar made damaging statements to the media, on top of breaching his contractual duties. Bahar's countersuit seeks $10.6 million from DRB-Hicom.

Lotus F1 confirms Grosjean, Maldonado for 2015

Wed, 19 Nov 2014

With the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix now just ten days away, the focus is beginning to shift to next year's Formula One World Championship, with more and more pieces to the puzzle falling into place. And the latest news comes from the Lotus team. The Enstone-based outfit has confirmed that it's keeping both its drivers right where they are for next season, with Romain Grosjean partnering Pastor Maldonado once again.
Swiss driver Grosjean, now 28 years old, made his grand prix debut with the team in 2009, returned as test driver in 2011 while winning the GP2 title, returned to the F1 grid in 2012 and has been driving for the team ever since. He's scored nine podium finishes to date, but has finished no better than his eighth place this season.
Venezuelan pilot Maldonado, 29, won the GP2 the year before his teammate, and moved up to F1 with Williams, for whom he drove for three seasons before switching to Lotus for this one. He shocked the field when he won the Spanish Grand Prix in 2012, but has only finished in the points once this season.

Lotus C-01 motorcycle shows its carbon-fiber face

Thu, 16 Jan 2014

Well, this isn't exactly what we were expecting. The images you see above come from Motorcycle News in the UK and are apparently official renderings of what the upcoming Lotus C-01 motorcycle will look like. As you can see, it's sort of a power cruiser, with a raked-out front end and extremely wide rubber out back.
Power will reportedly come from a liquid-cooled V-twin engine sourced from KTM, similar to the one used in the Austrian's brand's own RC8R, but tuned to produce around 200 horsepower. It appears that the powertrain and all its related necessities will be housed in a carbon fiber monocoque (whether the bodywork serves as a stressed member or not, we can't say) in a traditional-looking black (really, exposed carbon fiber weave) and yellow color scheme.
From the looks of these renderings, the C-01 might be intended as a competitor for the Ducati Diavel and ought to be very quick in a straight line. We're not so sure that's what a motorcycle wearing the Lotus badge should be, even if its builders are only using the marque's name under license, but we're looking forward to seeing the final result in production trim.
