A Jaguar, most will agree, is an animal that inspires with its awesome beauty. Part of that beauty is the sense of danger associated with the deadly predator. This trait, we believe, has been convincingly translated into automotive terms with Jaguar Cars’ latest offering: the XKR-S GT.

This GT's purpose is to fight, and to win. Based on the already manlyXKR-S and developed by Jaguar's Engineered to Order (ETO) division, the GT receives several chassis and aerodynamic enhancements aimed at increasing its on-track prowess. The standard car’s brakes are swapped out for carbon ceramics that benefit from automatic pre-filling and pressurizing the brake system as the driver lifts off the throttle for quick top-of-pedal response. The new discs measure 15.7 inches up front and 15 inches out back, and are clamped by six- and four-piston calipers. The entire suspension has been revised with a wider front track, increased camber, and revised bushings; the adaptive damping system is height-adjustable, and the steering has been tweaked with a quicker ratio. ETO also fits unique, 20-inch forged-aluminum wheels on Pirelli Corsa tires sized 255/35 front and 305/30 rear.

The XKR-S GT is easily recognizable by the large intakes stretching nearly the length of its hood—if Homer Simpson has taught us anything, it’s that speed-holes make cars go faster—and its huge rear wing. The latter, as well as the rear diffuser, the wheel-arch “spats,” the canards, and the front splitter all are made from carbon fiber. Such exotica on low-hanging body panels will require the utmost care when navigating curbs, driveways, ramps, parking structures, or anything else you might experience driving in Anytown, U.S.A. All XKs are all-aluminum cars, and the GT is no different, and it adds an aluminum undertray for aerodynamic purposes.
The GT’s supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 is rated at 550 horsepower at 6500 rpm, and it produces 502 lb-ft of torque from 2500 rpm—identical levels of output as the mill found in the standard XKR-S. Jaguar promises a 0-to-60 sprint in 3.9 seconds, a conservative claim that we believe can easily be beaten. Top speed, somewhat curiously for a track special, is governed at 186 mph. But at that velocity, the XKR-S GT generates 320 pounds of downforce, and it probably wouldn't go much beyond this marker anyway.

Even in its GT form, the XKR-S retains an aging six-speed automatic, a competent unit to be certain, but one that seems slightly outdated after the adoption of the eight-speed automatic in other Jaguar Land Rover products. While the slushbox fails to generate excitement, we like the fact that the car has been fitted with a louder exhaust system with the ability, as the press release states, to "enunciate the car's aural character." The traction-control system also has been modified, and Jaguar cites the change as one of the reasons for the GT’s improved acceleration times versus the standard XKR-S, leading us to believe there’s a little more wiggle room to be had in the new setup

Jaguar to finish building six remaining Lightweight E-Types

Back in February of 1963, Jaguar set about making a small run of lightweight E-Types. It recrafted the bodywork out of aluminum, shoehorned in a 3.8-liter straight-six with an aluminum block, stripped out the interior, removed the chrome trim and fitted lighter-weight side windows. The result was a 250-pound reduction in curb weight and a commensurate increase in performance, especially evident on the race track. The company originally set about building 18 examples, but only managed 12. The remaining six were allocated chassis numbers, but were never built. That is, until now.
Fifty years since the last of the original 12 lightweight E-Types were completed, Jaguar has announced that it is preparing to resume production and complete the final six examples. The company has assigned its top craftsmen to the job, who will build the half-dozen continuation Lightweights to the same exact specifications as the original dozen. Former sister-company and perennial arch-rival Aston Martin undertook a similar task (or at least authorized Zagato to do so) when it sanctioned four continuation examples of the original DB4 GT Zagato based on original chassis numbers in 1988, and another two based on original body shells and stock DB4 chassis in 1992.
Jaguar has not yet announced pricing and availability for the continuation Lightweights, but the first old-is-new example is set to debut this summer, whereupon Coventry will release further details. You can bet, though, that each one will be snapped up rather quick at just about any price the British automaker cares to put on them.

Was it right for Chevrolet to detune the 1975 Corvette's base engine to 165 horsepower? Was Aston Martin wrong to make the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet? Is BMW crazy to be testing the new 1 Series with three-cylinder engines and front-wheel drive? It seems now, just as in the 1970s and 1980s, that emissions regulations and social considerations are driving some automakers to adopt unbefitting practices to maintain acceptance in the eyes of governments and consumers. Jaguar has jumped on the bandwagon, and is considering development of small, frugal, front-wheel-drive cars to help lower Jaguar Land Rover's average vehicle CO2 levels in light of tightening European emissions regulations, Autocar reports.
By 2020, the European Union expects the model range of every manufacturer to average 95 grams per kilometer, which is a new law passed by the European Parliament in April. Manufacturers who make more than 300,000 vehicles per year must meet these targets, and JLR is expected to be producing up to 700,000 vehicles per year by then. CO2 regulations after 2020 will only get stricter, as EU politicians already are talking about lowering CO2 levels to between 68 g/km and 78 g/km. (To put that in perspective, Autocar posits that driving a fully charged electric vehicle in Europe produces about 75 g/km when factoring in the power-generation infrastructure.)
Jaguar has some choices here, but so far they all have drawbacks. It could develop a new, compact chassis architecture for a line of compact vehicles, but the investment required for such a project could be prohibitively expensive. Jaguar has been looking into using the Land Rover Evoque platform for a small SUV, Autocar reports, but Land Rover brand manager John Edwards raises issue with such a plan, saying it may not be financially feasible.
