PRESENCE POWER PERFORMANCE PROVENANCE PRESTIGE

PRESENCE: This is a car that people notice. Most don't know what it is, but they can't help staring and admiring. Most think it is much newer than it is. Those in the know start drooling and babbling that they haven't seen one this nice in many years.
POWER: An underrated 278HP
PERFORMANCE: How fast do you want to go?
PROVENANCE: Same careful owner since 1996 and now owned by a fussy former Nissan-Infiniti technician. Last year that the Q45T had Super Hicas. Best color combo. 100% Original paint. Low mileage.
PRESTIGE: A really bad, gangster ride that no one else has.

Up for auction is my fantastic 1994 Infiniti Q45t. If you are familiar with this car, you can skip to the next paragraph. When Infiniti first built the Q45, they had BMW squarely in their sights. They were out to build a car of the highest quality, fit and finish, and performance. They certainly succeeded in creating an overbuilt car that cost Nissan more money than they ever made on this model. And they were not cheap, either. This car comes with the original window sticker which shows a MSRP of $51,325. The beauty of a car like this is that with proper care it can last for decades and hundreds of thousands of miles. And when some part is wearing out, it does so with "graceful degradation", meaning that there tends to be warning signs of failure rather than anything sudden happening. The Q45 is capable of top speeds in excess of 155 MPH, and with an ECU modification it can do 170+. Just in case you have access to that kind of road! This is also a Touring model, which came with Super Hicas 4 wheel steering, trunk spoiler and BBS wheels. The BBS wheels are long gone. When the previous owner bought the car from an Infiniti dealer in 1996, he had them trade for a set of chromed turbine wheels. Go figure. Well I sold them so they are gone too. This is the only non original thing on the car.

The car is in incredible shape for being 20 years old. I bought the car last November. I was looking for something else entirely at the time but when I saw it, I had to have it. You see, years ago I owned a black on black 1993 Q45 that I loved dearly. I had that car for 7 years and when I finally sold it (I was traveling the country in my RV and didn't want it to sit), it had 222k miles on it. A friend's teenage daughter managed to get another 2 years out of the car despite poor maintenance. Needless to say, I was sold when I saw this car. It is way nicer than my other car ever was. Well, after searching for eight months, I finally found the car I was originally looking for. I can't keep both so my sweet Q45 is now for sale.

The previous owner garaged it when not driving and did regular maintenance. The paint is completely original and still has a great shine. The interior looks nearly new. The leather seats are in amazing condition. There's no cracks, tears, split seams or excessive wear anywhere.  Never smoked in, there are no funny smells, only the aroma of rich leather. To help preserve the seats' condition, I soaked them with mink oil for 3 days. Nobody's old french fries under these seats! The car drives like a Q45 should and you would be hard pressed to find another one this nice anywhere. Since I got it, I have fully serviced the car including oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, transmission filter service and complete fluid replacement. New wiper blades, clean washer fluid. I did find some oil seepage coming from between the oil filter mounting base and the block. It's not enough to notice any drop on the dipstick so I haven't bothered to fix it. It's not burning any oil either as I haven't added a drop of oil since the last oil change 2000 miles ago and it's still full. I wanted to bring the looks and handling into the 21st century, so I put a new set of 18x8 OEM wheels, not from Infiniti but they sure look it. I will only tell the buyer what they came from as I studied hard to put the package together, and I like the fact that I haven't seen another Q45 with this combo. Combined with the new Sumitomo HTR-ZIII 245/40/18XL tires, the look and handling of this Q45 has been transformed and updated. Tires have around 2k on them.

The car drives like a nearly new car. It is quite fast and moves with authority ( watch the video below!). Everything feels smooth and tight. The cockpit is whisper quiet even at extralegal speeds, save for the ferocious roar of the 4 cam V8 when you step on it. Mechanically, the car is fully functional and needs nothing. Ac and heat work great. Windows, locks, sunroof, mirrors, seats, cruise control are all working. All interior and exterior lighting works except for the trunk light. Bose stereo works great through the front speakers. Both rear speaker amps were making noise so they have been disconnected. Power antenna works great, CD changer does not. If this is significant for you, I might have a line on one for $25. The trim at the base of the driver's seat is cracked. Driver's headrest doesn't move.

There are some door dings that would be removable by paintless dent removal. There are typical rock chips on the front of the hood, small scratches like you might expect to see on a black car that is a few years old. The rear bumper has a flex crack on the right corner. Looks exactly like it did when I got it, so I don't think it will peel. The front bumper has a couple of light, hard to see impressions that did not crack the paint, plus a few small chips. Some careful touch up on the chips and they would all but disappear. I decided to let it be. In  my opinion, the car is near show quality and would score high for originality. It's just hard to believe it is 20 years old!

Included is the owner's manual, all the original keys (2 large medallion keys, 2 smaller keys and a flat wallet key), and 2 keyless remotes. Although I don't think it came with a '94, I am including a cool Infiniti key case that a friend gave me. Also included are some parts that I picked up reasonably since I got the car. The winner will get an excellent used transmission pulled from a clean wreck with 93k miles. I got a deal I couldn't refuse so I figured I would have a spare. Same with a spare cam angle sensor. Also a set of very rare Eibach performance springs mounted to Tokico blue shocks. The rear shocks are in good shape. The fronts have some damage to the mounting and perch, plus they are for 90-93, so I wouldn't use them. I was going to put the springs on to lower the car mainly for looks but in time I decided I like way it looks, as well as the ride quality. I also have a new rack boot that I didn't get around to putting on. The left side is torn but there are no leaks.

This might just be the nicest original Q45 for sale anywhere. All in all, it's a freakin' fantastic car. I would not hesitate to get in this car and drive it to Key West RIGHT NOW! Drive, collect, show. Export it to Japan, you would probably make a killing as they never had these. It's your choice. I can send a copy of the clean Autocheck report if desired. There is a modest reserve, certainly low for a car of this quality. Requests for the reserve will be ignored, please just bid what you are willing to pay. Please review my feedback, I have sold many vehicles on ebay with no complaints. Don't let it get away because you know the old saying "It's only original once!"

Toyota tops Kelley Blue Book's Resale Value Awards

Tue, 27 Nov 2012

Kelley Blue Book announced its annual Best Resale Value Award winners, and we weren't too surprised to see the list dominated by Japanese automakers - mainly Toyota and Honda. KBB hands out the awards based on the projected residual value of mostly all 2013 model year vehicles, and Toyota skated home with a number of awards including 10 of the 22 overall categories and having five of its products in the top 10 for models with best resale value. KBB's Best Resale Value Awards were announced in the same week as the ALG Residual Value Awards, and there were many similarities between both lists, especially when it came to Toyota.
To come up with its winners, KBB measures depreciation over the first five years of ownership, and looks for the cars it expects to hold its value the best after this time; on average, the report says the 2013 model year vehicles will lose 61.8 percent of its value in five years. Of the 22 categories, 15 slots were filled by Toyota, Honda and Nissan products, while the Camaro and Porsche (Cayenne and Panamera) each took home a pair of awards. If Toyota has anything to be upset about in this list of cars, it's that categories for Hybrid/Alternative Energy Car and Electric Vehicle went to the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Volt, respectively.
The overall top 10 models for the best resale value in 2013 are, in alphabetical order:

Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge running prototype driven by Sebastian Vettel

Fri, 04 Apr 2014

Infiniti's high-performance Q50 Eau Rouge concept might be one of the biggest teases in the current automotive world. It was first shown at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show as a body without an engine. Then, the sports sedan arrived at the Geneva Motor Show with a modified version of the turbocharged V6 from the GT-R under the hood, tuned to 560 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, and with all-wheel drive. However, it was still just a concept. Finally, the Japanese luxury automaker is showing us what the Eau Rouge can do on the road - briefly.
The company brought reigning Formula One champ Sebastian Vettel along to get behind the wheel, for this all-too-short video from the Millbrook Proving Ground in the UK. There's more good news too. While Infiniti isn't saying that it's definitely going to build the Eau Rouge, it is "pressing ahead with the evaluation." More info about these tests will be released at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show at the end of April. Scroll down to watch Vettel drive the Q50 Eau Rouge and read a little more about it.

2014 Infiniti Q50's novel drive-by-wire steering system recalled

Mon, 16 Dec 2013

The gradual replacement of mechanical components in automobiles with electronic systems brings with it definite advantages, but also poses certain potential dangers. Just think of the inevitable problems you've encountered with the computer on which you're reading these words and you'll know what we mean. But a computer crashing isn't as problematic as your car going on the fritz when its electronic systems fail.
That's what Infiniti is being reminded of with its new drive-by-wire electronic steering system. The Japanese automaker developed and installed the Direct Adaptive Steering System in its new Q50 sedan, but a small number of those cars on the road are now being recalled due to that system.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, on a small number of examples, the Q50's optional by-wire system may fail if the temperature in the engine compartment drops below freezing. There's a backup mechanical setup in place should the electronic system fail, but NHTSA says that the backup system may also fail to engage in time to avoid a crash.
