Honda to recall 1.1 million U.S. vehicles to re-replace Takata airbags

Honda said on Tuesday it would recall about 1.1 million Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States to re-replace defective Takata airbags on the driver's side. The company said it was aware of one injury linked to the defect that may have caused the airbag to rupture when it was deployed in a crash. The vehicles involved in the recall were previously repaired using specific Takata desiccated replacement inflators (PSDI-5D) or entire replacement airbag modules containing these inflators. "Those replacement inflators," Honda said in a statement, "are now deemed defective." Free repairs of the recalled cars would begin immediately in the United States with replacement parts made by alternate suppliers, Honda said. Honda became aware of the issue after a Honda Odyssey crash, where the front airbag deployed and injured the driver's arm. An investigation later showed that manufacturing issues at Takata's Mexico facility introduced excessive moisture into the inflator during assembly, leading to the problem. The total number of recalled inflators is now about 21 million in about 12.9 million Honda and Acura vehicles that have been subject to recall for replacing Takata front airbag inflators in the United States, the company said. Woman keys parking officer's car after receiving ticket

Police in Santa Ana, CA, are on the lookout for a local woman who vandalized a parking attendant's vehicle after being issued a parking ticket earlier this month. According to the Orange County Register, a Santa Ana Parking Department enforcement officer ticketed a 1988 Honda Accord for an expired meter just after 2:30pm on February 2. The suspect sat on the hood of the Honda while the officer issued the ticket. Apparently unhappy with the ticket, the woman tore it up on the spot. Then, using her car keys, she proceeded to carve a vulgar message into the hood of the parking enforcement vehicle parked next to her. When the parking officer returned to her vehicle, the unidentified suspect tapped on the enforcement vehicle's windshield, pointed at the damage to the hood, then fled in the Honda. The alleged vandal has not been identified by the Santa Ana Police Department yet since the Honda was recently sold in a lien sale and has not been registered by its new owner. The suspect, shown in surveillance footage from a local business, is described as a white female between 20 and 30 years old, just over five feet tall with a slim build and dark hair. Corporal Anthony Bertanga of the SAPD stated that the woman faces a misdemeanor charge and will probably need to reimburse the city for the cost of repairs to the parking enforcement vehicle. "Right now, it's on the taxpayers to fix the vehicle," said Cpl. Bertanga. The Police are asking Santa Ana residents to contact them with any information on the alleged vandal.

Honda has a new and expanded vision for its plug-in electric vehicles, including more plug-in lawn mowers and construction machines. While things like the Miimo are cool, we'll admit that we're more into the heavy emphasis that Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo just put on pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles. In fact, Hachigo is so confident in these electric options that he said that Honda expects fully two-thirds of its vehicles will fit into one of those three categories by 2030. "We will make a plug-in hybrid type available for our major models" - Takahiro Hachigo Speaking at an annual speech in Japan, Hachigo talked about an electric version of the popular Honda Cub motorcycle, the EV-CUB. This electric two-wheeler could come to Japan in about two year and then to various countries in Southeast Asia. As for four-wheelers, the way that Hachigo sees electrification working is to first emphasize plug-in hybrids as the core of the brand's electrification efforts. Specifically, he said that, "we will make a plug-in hybrid type available for our major models and increase the number of models sequentially." The end result, he said, is that, "we will strive to make two-thirds of our overall unit sales from plug-in hybrid/hybrid vehicles and zero-emissions vehicles such as, FCVs and battery EVs by around 2030." The company's next hydrogen vehicle is the Clarity, which goes on sale in Japan in March. It's next-gen EV and PHEV should arrive in or around 2018. You can watch the speech in the video above. The only other traditional automaker that is willing to put a big number on its upcoming electric vehicle sales is Audi, which said at the LA Auto Show last year that between 20 and 25 percent of its new vehicles sold will have a plug by 2025. If Audi wants to catch Honda's aggressive claims, it'll need to work hard in the five years after 2025. Related Video:
