Up for auction is my 1953 Dodge Pilothouse B4B pickup.  This truck is still mostly all original, including most of the paint.  It has a great patina that is hard to see in the photos.  I bought the truck 4 years ago from the second owner.  He had it for over 5 years, but I don't believe he ever drove it.  When I got it I had to rebuild all 4 brake assemblies, replace the water pump and thermostat, had the radiator cleand and cored, removed gas tank and had it cleaned and sealed and replaced the fuel sending unit.  All gauges work except the temp. gauge.  I installed an aftermarket temp gauge so I could drive it and monitor the temp.  All the lights work except for the aftermarket turn signals that were installed by the second owner.  Don't think it would take much to fix them, I just never bothered.  The truck starts easily, still has the original 6 volt system.  It runs quietly and does not smoke.  Interior:  seat cover has been replaced and is in excellent condition, as is the the headliner and the door panels.  Dash is in great shape other than where someone cut a radio mounting hole in it.  Been looking for a radio plate cover but haven't found one yet.  Clutch is solid, and tranny shifts easily.  I think the glass is all original.  It is showing signs of cloudiness around the edges, more of that great patina.  The thing needing the most attention on this truck is the wooden bed.  Someone painted it white after putting some type of wood filler in a couple of the corners.  Replacement bed floor kits are readily available.  Truck is solid nderneath with very little rust showing anywhere.  I'm selling this truck because I bought a 50 Chevy and I can't drive them both. I'll be happy to answer any questions.  If you want to talk, send me an email with your phone number and I'll call you back.  Thanks for looking, Rob

Dodge Dart Registry helps you crowdsource money for your next ride [w/video]

Wed, 23 Jan 2013

To be honest, we're surprised something like this didn't pop up sooner. Chrysler is riffing on gift registries for couples getting married or expecting babies and cross-pollinating it with a social media funding website like Kickstarter to help customers buy its 2013 Dodge Dart. The Dodge Dart Registry allows people to build and customize a new Dart exactly how they want it, then let other people purchase some or all of the components as gifts.
The registry lets you add features like dark headlights, dual exhaust, various wheels and even interior options without choosing a specific trim level. This sounds a lot like the system Scion uses to let its customers configure cars, and this could be a great idea for Dodge. Of course, this system has the added benefit of being a social media affair for you to share with your friends... you know, so they can help pay for some of the parts, too.
The best thing about the registry is that you can configure your dream Dart from the comfort of your home computer, which strikes us as much better than walking around Bed, Bath and Beyond for the better part of an afternoon with an electronic scanner. The one thing that Dodge doesn't offer? "Thank You" cards. Those are on you.

How fracking is causing Chrysler minivans to sit on Detroit's riverfront

Fri, 25 Apr 2014

It's fascinating the way that one change to a complex system can have all sorts of unintended consequences. For instance, there are hundreds of new Chrysler Town and County and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans built in Windsor, Ontario, sitting in lots on the Detroit waterfront because of the energy boom in the Bakken oil field in the northern US and parts of Canada.
The huge amount of crude oil coming from these sites mostly use freight trains for transport, and that supply boom has resulted in a shortage of railcars to carry other goods. According to The Windsor Star, North American crude oil transport by train has gone from 9,500 carloads in 2008 to 434,032 carloads in 2013. Making matters worse, some North American rail infrastructure is still damaged because of this year's harsh winter, and that's slowing things down even further.
Chrysler admits to The Star that it has had some delivery delays due to the freight train shortage. In the meantime, it's using more trucks to deliver its vehicles. Trucking is a far less economical solution, partially because a train can carry so many more units at one time, but alternatives are slim. The Windsor plant alone has a deal for 33 trucks to distribute the minivans around Canada and the Midwestern US.

Chrysler's Jefferson North plant builds 5-millionth SUV [w/video]

Thu, 15 Aug 2013

Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant opened in 1992 for production of the first Jeep Grand Cherokee, but in the subsequent years, the Detroit plant has gone on to produce some of the company's biggest SUVs including the Jeep Commander and Dodge Durango. Earlier this week, the plant produced its five-millionth SUV, which, fittingly, was a Grand Cherokee.
Celebrating the plant's five-millionth unit, the silver 2014 Grand Cherokee was promptly donated to the USO. In addition to this milestone SUV, Chrysler also had a near-perfect 1993-95 ZJ Grand Cherokee on hand for the photo op. Scroll down for the Chrysler press release as well as a video showing some of the speeches from the celebration.
