1983 Datsun 280zx, Automatic, to drive or restore, $2,900

I'm only the 2nd owner of this gray, 1983 Datsun 280ZX. It has 207,000 miles but is in mechanically great shape. It still has the original engine, an in-line 6 cylinder. This is the non-turbo version. New battery and tires and the brakes are in great shape. The car has never in an accident. A bike rack with hitch is included. Body has only a few dings but there is some rust and the paint is faded. The leather upholstery is in great shape. This car could be restored. It has a clear title and it passed smog back in March. I'm hoping to get $2,900 but please bid with abandon.

Here is some information about this car from a Classic Car Magazine:

History of the 1978-1983 Datsun 280ZX

The Datsun 240Z was a game changer when in debuted in late 1969. Reliable, fast, and a bargain, the Z instantly redefined what a sports car could be. For British and Italian competition, it was like the comet that killed the dinosaurs. Like anything else, however, all good things must come to an end and by the late 1970s the original concept was beginning to run its course. The 280Z was essentially a 240Z with big impact bumpers and fuel injection. Datsun needed something newer and flashier.

Enter the Datsun 280ZX in 1978. Sports car purists who watched the Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE) Datsuns clean up were horrified. The ZX was a GT for the disco era with two-tone paints, T-tops, velour seats, and fancy stereos. It was certainly softer and less sporting, but it filled a niche well and like the 260Z and 280Z was available in a 2+2 body, which the ZX seemed to fill out better than the previous cars. Ironically, the 280ZX was raced successfully too in some cases by actor Paul Newman.

With added weight, performance predictably suffered. In order to deal with this, Nissan offered a turbocharger option starting in 1981 that raised power output from about 140 hp to 180 hp. Brakes and suspension were subsequently improved in 1982 making the last two model years of the turbo the most performance oriented of the 280ZX.

As of yet, collectors have had trouble seeing beyond the 240Z in terms of collectability, which has made the barrier to ownership low. Very nice examples of the 280ZX still turn up for sale (often at big collector car auctions) for very affordable prices. The last two years of the turbo in particular can be terrific cars for the money.

First new Datsun in decade sketched, set for Indian reveal

Mon, 01 Jul 2013

Nissan's Datsun nameplate revival will begin with two models bound for the Indian market. Nissan has released sketches of a five-door hatchback based on the Micra (codenamed K2) and a top-down view of a hood that could potentially be from a sedan.
The company's press release says all will be revealed on July 15 in New Delhi, India. The Datsun lineup will be first offered in 2014 to that country's ride-deprived residents as well as Indonesia and Russia. Later in 2014, South Africa will join the list.
We've heard Nissan plans for Datsuns to share platforms with company-owned Lada. In January, we heard the projected price tag could be around $3,000 USD to compete with Chinese imports. The official press release (which can be read in full below) says nothing about either of these reports, however.

Fiat contemplating sub-brand to compete with Dacia, Datsun

Tue, 05 Feb 2013

You can add Fiat to the admittedly short list of automakers considering a low-cost brand to rival Dacia. The inexpensive Eastern European brand from Renault-Nissan has performed on the balance sheet like a premium model line, and the money the alliance is taking off the table is encouraging other players to deal themselves in. Pretty soon Nissan's Datsun sub-brand will join the Dacia party, going on sale in Russia, Indonesia and India and will claim even more rubles, rupiahs and rupees for the parent company. Volkswagen recently said it will make a decision this year on a budget line for the Chinese market. With the euthanasia of Lancia and plans to move the Fiat brand upmarket, company CEO Sergio Marchionne wonders aloud to Automotive News Europe whether there could be room for a new budget brand underneath Fiat.
We're told that the initiative has been in the idea box for five years and even moved to the stage of name considerations, like Innocenti, but worries about profit kept it from realization. If such a range were to be developed, Marchionne says it couldn't be built in Italy and stay within budget, and the company is "analyzing its manufacturing capacity outside of Europe to see if a low-cost brand is viable."

Datsun previews new budget sedan for Russia [w/video]

Thu, 13 Mar 2014

Nobody does cars on the cheap quite like the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The former part of the equation already has its Dacia brand of cost-effective, no-frills vehicles that have become a favorite of Top Gear co-host James May, and last summer, the latter revived its Datsun nameplate for a budget brand of its own.
The reborn Datsun launched in India this past July with its Go hatchback, returned in September with the Go+ minivan and revealed the Redi-Go concept just last month. And now it's given us our first look at an upcoming budget sedan developed specifically for the Russian market.
The as-yet unnamed vehicle (which we'll bet will incorporate the word "go" into its nameplate somehow) is set to debut on April 4, where it will launch the Datsun brand in Russia. Few details are available at this point, but the low-cost sedan was designed in Japan to offer Russian drivers "an engaging driving experience, peace of mind ownership and accessibility at the right and transparent price, with a competitive Total Cost of Ownership."
