Up for auction is my 1955 Imperial Newport.  The listing title is a bit of a misnomer because in 1955 Imperial became its own marque in an effort to better compete with Cadillac and Lincoln in the luxury car market.

It has a 331 ci Hemi rated at 250 hp and a two speed Power Flite transmission.  There is no "Park" on the dash mounted shifter which the Chrysler engineers considered a safety feature!!  To park the car you put it in neutral and engage the parking brake.  The engine is strong and runs nicely while the trans shifts well and gets you where you want to go.

The car still has its original 6 volt electrical system that runs the power seats and power windows.  The interior is pretty clean(please refer to the pictures) but the seat covers, while having the proper pleats, do not have the cloth inserts that repeat the pattern on the door panels.

The body has a couple of rust spots which I have included pictures of but is straight and looks good.  The paint is a 40 year old repaint and is showing its age.  I believe the car was a two tone vehicle originally which was out of style by the time the repaint was done.  This car is virtually complete and only missing a couple of small items.  The first is a clip that covers the joint on the rear window stainless trim.  The other is the power window panel on the drivers side is from a later model.  The other thing is the horn ring is broken but can be fixed by someone who can braze pot metal.

The car sold for almost $6,000 in 1955 so there were not many options.  This car has the "Solex" glass option which are all there in great shape and the Kelsey Hayes wire wheels which are on all tires including the spare!  The main option this car does NOT have is air conditioning.  There was no convertible in 1955 so the 2dr hardtop is the sportiest model available.

I am selling the car because I just don't have the space for it any more.  I collect 60s A and B body Mopar muscle and I grabbed this on a whim thinking I would restore it.  I ended up driving the car now and then and just enjoying it the way it is.  Now I am caught up in other projects and just cannot find the space to keep it.  It is sitting in a very good friend's garage while I try to sell it.  The car has a clear Montana title.

The bottom line on this car is that it is a driver that is a great candidate for restoration or just to remain a driver until you are ready to restore it.

Shipping is the buyer's responsibility but we are very willing to help load the car.  The car is also available to be looked at and driven if you come to Missoula.  Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions and thanks so much for looking!!

NHTSA investigating power modules on Chrysler Group SUVs and minivans

Mon, 29 Sep 2014

The Center for Auto Safety is officially petitioning the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to begin scrutinizing alleged problems with the totally integrated power module (TIPM) on about 24 Chrysler Group SUVs and minivans. The advocacy group claims that the part's failure can cause affected vehicles to stall or not start at all. NHTSA is still looking into the accusations and deciding whether a full investigation is actually warranted.
The CAS petition claims at least 70 TIPM failures, but according to NHTSA, six of the complaints are for models that don't have the modules. In 34 of the reported cases, the vehicles refused to start, and in 17 of them the engine stalled. There were also two allegations of smoke and one of a fire. However, none of these affected airbag deployment or resulted in a crash.
This petition isn't the first TIPM-related problem for Chrysler Group. A recent report in the New York Times alleged that it found 240 complaints potentially related to the issue on NHTSA's website alone. In September, the automaker also recalled 230,760 examples worldwide (188,723 in the US) of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango replace the fuel pump relay circuit inside of the TIPM-7 with one external to the unit. The original part could allegedly cause the models to stall without warning. Even earlier, the company also recalled about 80,000 examples of the Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Nitro in 2007 to have the module reprogrammed.

Chrysler Uconnect gets dealer-activated navigation, new infotainment features

Mon, 07 Jan 2013

Get in just about any mid-level Chrysler product these days, and you'll see a touchscreen head unit that would be perfect for a navigation system. The only thing is that some of these cars equipped with the head unit for Chrysler's Uconnect infotainment system were not optioned up with navigation at the time of purchase, leaving drivers looking for turn-by-turn directions relying on either an aftermarket nav system or a smartphone. Starting on select new Chrysler products, however, customers with Uconnect will now be able to upgrade to navigation as a dealer-activated option.
Announced at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, this new element of Uconnect will allow owners to have an in-dash navigation system installed quickly and easily; Chrysler said that this will be a major benefit for used-car buyers. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like this system will be retroactive on previous Uconnect head units, but it will launch this year on the 2013 Ram 1500, 2013 SRT Viper and the 2014 Fiat 500L. Chrysler did not announce the expected MSRP to have dealers activate the navigation capabilities.
Another infotainment option for Chrysler buyers is the Uconnect Access system that can allow WiFi, voice text messaging, emergency assistance, remote vehicle operation (such as starting the engine or locking/unlocking the doors) and limited POI searches using Bing. Also introduced at CES, the new Uconnect Access via Mobile system builds on this by allowing users to add in-car apps such as iHeart Radio, Pandora and Slacker by connecting to the system via a smartphone. This system will first be offered on the 2013 Ram and Viper.

Chrysler IPO to be filed as early as this week

Mon, 16 Sep 2013

An initial public offering for the Chrysler Group could happen this week, following Sergio Marchionne's comments to Financial Times in London, according to a report from The Detroit News. Fiat, which owns 58.5 percent of Chrysler, has been in a battle with the UAW retiree healthcare trust over its minority stake in the company. While the automotive union recognizes its role as a temporary shareholder, the two couldn't come to an agreement on how the shares should be priced.
As Marchionne explained to FT, a Chrysler IPO allows the market, rather than the two competing sides, to determine the value of the shares. The public offering is a risky move, which could potentially hang one side out to dry - if the shares go high, it's bad news for Fiat, but if they go low, the UAW stands to lose. Regardless of where the stock prices go in an IPO, though, it's a move that's being supported by analysts, who are quick to cite Chrysler's near-constant growth and a product lineup that is getting healthier with each new introduction.
