OK FOLKS,.....THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION ALONE ARE WORTH MY ASKING PRICE....PLUS OFFY  INTAKE...AND TBI PARTS....ETC....SO, IF YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR ONE....NOW IS YOUR CHANCE....THIS ONE HAS DONE A PERSONAL BEST OF 16MPG SO FAR, AND SHE CAN ONLY DO BETTER IF YOU WANT TO FINISH OFF WHAT I STARTED :)...IF YOU WANT IT....NOW IS THE TIME...SERIOUS BUYERS INQUIRE AS NEEDED,THANKS.

THIS IS "BETSY"....SHE HAS BEEN MY BABY FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS, BUT RECENTLY HAS WORN OUT HER WELCOME WITH ME, AND I HAVE REPLACED HER WITH A K5, SO IT'S TIME FOR THIS R20 TO FIND A NEW HOME. THIS IS A 1988 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN R20 TOWING PACKAGE MODEL, THIS IS ONE OF THE LAST "TRUE ORIGINAL SUV", FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO REMEMBER THE GOOD OLD DAYS, THESE ARE FAMILIAR TO YOU. WHEN I WAS A YOUNG LADD,  WE SAW MANY OF THESE TOWING THE FINEST TRAVEL TRAILERS OF THE DAY, THIS WAS "THE" TRUCK TO HAVE IF YOU OWNED AN AIRSTREAM, OR BASICALLY ANY GOOD SIZED TRAILER BACK THEN.

I ACQUIRED "BETSY" FROM A GUY WHO USED TO HAVE A MARINE BUSINESS, AND HE USED HER TO TOW 20-40 FOOT PLEASURE BOATS WITH WHEN HE DID DELIVERIES, THE REST OF THE TIME SHE SAT UNDER A POLE BARN.  FROM WHAT I CAN RECALL, THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN IN FLORIDA FOR THE BETTER PART OF 20 YEARS OR MORE. SHE MUST HAVE ORIGINALLY COME FROM THE NORTH, AS SHE IS A VERY RARE FACTORY "HEATER ONLY"MODEL, MEANING SHE WAS ORDERED WITHOUT A/C TO BEGIN WITH, JUST SEE THE FIREWALL FOR LACK OF AN EVAPORATOR HOLE.  HOWEVER, SOMEONE HAD FACTORY AIR INSTALLED AT SOME POINT, AS I DISCOVERED THE EVAPORATOR IN DASH UNIT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL A NEW STEREO SYSTEM. THE CONTROLS ARE STILL IN THE DASH TOO, AND SEEM TO WORK THE BLEND DOORS PROPERLY. APPEARS AS THOUGH SHE ORIGINALLY HAD CRUISE CONTROL TOO, BUT I NEVER DID DECODE THE RPO TO CONFIRM THAT OR NOT.

THIS IS A VERY RARE UNIT, IT NOT ONLY HAS THE 454 WITH TH 400 TRANS BEHIND IT, BUT IT HAS THE LARGEST REAR END CORPORATE GM EVER INSTALLED...THIS IS BASICALLY THE SAME REAR YOU WILL FIND IN THE MILITARY VERSIONS. IT APPEARS TO STILL HAVE THE 4.56 GEAR, BUT I NEVER DID CONFIRM THAT, I WAS TOLD IT WAS CHANGED TO 4.11, BUT FROM WHAT I CAN TELL, IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS NEVER CHANGED. I'VE NEVER EVEN HAD THE WHEELS OFF, NEVER HAD A REASON TO, SHE STOPPED FINE AND WAS BEING DRIVEN A FEW DAYS A WEEK UNTIL A COUPLE MONTHS AGO. THIS IS A SOLID TRUCK, YOU WILL BE HARD PRESSED TO FIND ANOTHER SUBURBAN THAT IS AS CLEAN UNDERNEATH AS THIS ONE, YOU WILL NOT FIND THE DREADED ROCKER PANEL ROT UNDER THIS ONE.
THE PICS SAY A LOT, BUT SHE IS NO WHERE NEAR AS SHINEY AS I HAD HER EARLIER THIS SUMMER, BUT SITTING IN THE DRIVE WAY HAS STARTED TO DULL HER AGAIN, TIME FOR YOU TO COME RESCUE HER AND GIVE HER A NEW LEASE ON LIFE :)

I'VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME, SWEAT, BLOOD, MONEY, AND SOME TEARS ON THIS ONE OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, BUT SHE HAS FINALLY PUSHED MY LAST BUTTON, NOW I JUST WANT HER GONE. SHE IS NOT CURRENTLY RUNNING, AND I BELIEVE A JUMPED TIMING CHAIN IS THE CULPRIT, BUT I COULD BE WRONG. RECENTLY I'VE INSTALLED A NEW DISTRIBUTOR, WITH MODULE, COIL, WIRES, CAP,  ROTOR, PLUGS, YES MSD, WITH CARDONE DISTRIBUTOR, SHE HAS A NEW ALTERNATOR, NEW AC DELCO IN-TANK FUEL PUMP, NEW GAS TANK, NEW GAS TANK STRAPS AND HOSES INCLUDING THE FILLER HOSE. NEW POWER STEERING PUMP AND HOSES WITHIN THE LAST FEW YEARS. RECENTLY NEW WINDOW MOTORS, INSIDE DOOR HANDLES, TRIM, LOCK SWITCHES, WINDOW SWITCHES, AND SEALS ON THE RIGHT SIDE PASSENGER DOORS. I ORIGINALLY INTENDED TO DO A MINOR RESTORATION ON THIS SUBURBAN, BUT THAT TURNED INTO A NEVER ENDING PROJECT AS I WAS TRYING TO DRIVE HER AND USE HER FOR WORK AT THE SAME TIME. AS SUCH, SHE IS A WORK IN PROGRESS THAT I HAVE SPENT OVER $3500 ON TO DATE, INCLUDING HAVING THE TH400 REBUILT LESS THAN SIX MONTHS AGO.

SHE STILL NEEDS THE WINDOW MOTORS AND SWITCHES AND SEALS DONE WITH THE SAME CARE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE TO MAKE THAT STUFF RIGHT, STILL NEEDS A DECENT STEREO INSTALLED, COULD STAND TO HAVE THE FRONT SEATS RE-DONE, AND ONE CUSHION ON THE BACK SEAT, DASH PAD, ETC, MICKEY MOUSE STUFF BASICALLY. IF YOU WANT TO INSTALL A/C, THAT IS ON YOU, I NEVER NEEDED IT, WAS GOING TO JUST ADD OSCILLATING FANS INSIDE, AS THE VENTS HAVE ALWAYS WORKED GREAT, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT DURING THE COOL SEASONS. RIGHT NOW THE DASH IS PARTLY DISASSEMBLED, BUT ALL THE PARTS, INCLUDING THE GM RADIO WILL BE INCLUDED. I EVEN HAVE THE FOUR, NICE, ORIGINAL FACTORY HUB CAPS THAT WILL BE INCLUDED. ONCE I GET MY STUFF OUT OF THE INTERIOR, I WILL TRY TO POST A FEW MORE PICS OF THE INSIDE. THE HEAD LINER WAS REPLACED JUST BEFORE I BOUGHT THE TRUCK, AND I ALSO REPLACED THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR WHEN I DID THE WINDOW MOTORS. THE UPPER METALLIC GREY  PART OF THE TRUCK WAS REPAINTED ABOUT FIVE TO SEVEN YEARS AGO FROM WHAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER TOLD ME, BUT THE REST OF THE PAINT IS MUCH OLDER, THE LOWER GREY APPEARS TO BE ORIGINAL.

THE FRONT GRILLE WAS ALSO ANOTHER PROJECT I DID WHEN I ADDED THE TRANSMISSION COOLER AND ELECTRIC FAN, THAT I NEVER DID GET WIRED IN, BUT IT FREE WHEELS AND COOLS JUST THE SAME. THE RADIATOR IS THE ORIGINAL HEAVY DUTY BRASS FOUR CORE AND IS IN GOOD SHAPE, THE FAN CLUTCH HAS BEEN REPLACED TOO. THE GRILL WAS A PROJECT UNTO ITSELF, LOTS OF TRIM PIECES, PAINTING, FITTING, ETC, AND I ADDED CHROME HEADLIGHT BEZELS, ALL FOUR HEADLIGHT BULBS ARE NEW AS WELL.

SHE HAS A VINTAGE OFFENHAUSER HIGH RISE DUAL PLANE INTAKE MANIFOLD NOW, THAT MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE, AND ALL OF THE TBI FUEL SYSTEM HAS BEEN REBUILT OR REPLACED WITHIN THE LAST TWO+ YEARS, INCLUDING A CUSTOM PROGRAMMED PROM FOR THE ECM, ALSO NEWER. I'VE TUNED AND TWEAKED THIS BABY FROM A LOUSY "9 MILES PER GALLON" WHEN I GOT HER, TO THE 16 MPG SHE CAN NOW ACHIEVE WHEN DRIVEN PROPERLY.  YES, THAT IS CORRECT, I'VE MADE THIS TRUCK DO 16 MILES PER GALLON, THAT HAS BEEN TESTED REPEATEDLY OVER A 60 MILE ROUTE THAT I TOOK ROUTINELY, TRAVELING AN AVERAGE OF 55-60 MPH AS CONSISTENTLY AS POSSIBLE. DO NOT EXPECT TO GET THAT IN TOWN, I'VE SEEN AS LITTLE AS 10 MPG, AND AS MUCH AS 12 MPG IN TOWN. HOWEVER, I ALSO HAVE A 3.42 RING AND PINION BRAND NEW IN THE BOX, WITH BEARINGS AND PARTS TO REBUILD THE REAR INTO A MPG HIGHWAY MINDED UNIT,  BUT NEVER GOT AROUND TO INSTALLING THEM, THEY WILL ALSO BE INCLUDED WITH THE TRUCK.

ALSO FORGOT TO MENTION SHE NOW HAS 1.73 ROLLER TIPPED ROCKERS ON THE DRIVER SIDE HEAD, BUT NEVER GOT TO FINISH THE OTHER SIDE, THE REST OF THE COMP CAMS ROCKERS WILL ALSO BE INCLUDED WITH THE TRUCK.

SO, IF YOU ARE FEELING FRISKY, AND ARE READY TO TOW-HAUL HER HOME, AND TAKE THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE APART AND DO A TIMING SET ON HER, BE MY GUEST, I AM OFFERING THIS SUBURBAN AT LESS THAN HALF OF WHAT I HAVE INVESTED, JUST TO GET HER OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. I'VE GOT TOO MANY PROJECTS, NOT ENOUGH TIME, NEED THE SPACE,.etc..TIME FOR HER TO FIND A NEW HOME....SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE, THANKS.

2022 Genesis GV70, raging at VW ID.4 tech and thoughts on a new Lexus LFA | Autoblog Podcast #696

Fri, Sep 17 2021

In this episode of the Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Senior Editor James Riswick. This week, they talk about driving the Genesis GV70, VW ID.4 and VW Taos. They talk about ways Chevy could "fix" the Camaro. James ranked all the James Bond films based solely on their starring cars. Next, they reach in the mailbag and discuss the question, "Do you think Lexus will make a successor to the LFA and, if so, what do you guys think it would be like?" After ruminating on that query, they dip into the mailbag a second time to recommend a sporty crossover to a listener in this week's Spend My Money segment. Here are a few of our automotive guilty pleasures

Tue, Jun 23 2020

It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway. The world is full of cars, and just about as many of them are bad as are good. It's pretty easy to pick which fall into each category after giving them a thorough walkaround and, more important, driving them. But every once in a while, an automobile straddles the line somehow between good and bad — it may be hideously overpriced and therefore a marketplace failure, it may be stupid quick in a straight line but handles like a drunken noodle, or it may have an interior that looks like it was made of a mess of injection-molded Legos. Heck, maybe all three. Yet there's something special about some bad cars that actually makes them likable. The idea for this list came to me while I was browsing classified ads for cars within a few hundred miles of my house. I ran across a few oddballs and shared them with the rest of the team in our online chat room. It turns out several of us have a few automotive guilty pleasures that we're willing to admit to. We'll call a few of 'em out here. Feel free to share some of your own in the comments below. Dodge Neon SRT4 and Caliber SRT4: The Neon was a passably good and plucky little city car when it debuted for the 1995 model year. The Caliber, which replaced the aging Neon and sought to replace its friendly marketing campaign with something more sinister, was panned from the very outset for its cheap interior furnishings, but at least offered some decent utility with its hatchback shape. What the two little front-wheel-drive Dodge models have in common are their rip-roarin' SRT variants, each powered by turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines. Known for their propensity to light up their front tires under hard acceleration, the duo were legitimately quick and fun to drive with a fantastic turbo whoosh that called to mind the early days of turbo technology. — Consumer Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski  Chevrolet HHR SS: Chevy's HHR SS came out early in my automotive journalism career, and I have fond memories of the press launch (and having dinner with Bob Lutz) that included plenty of tire-smoking hard launches and demonstrations of the manual transmission's no-lift shift feature. The 260-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder was and still is a spunky little engine that makes the retro-inspired HHR a fun little hot rod that works quite well as a fun little daily driver.

GM opens military discount to 21M veterans and their spouses

Thu, Apr 7 2016

May marks the start of National Military Appreciation Month, and General Motors is getting into the spirit by expanding its military discount program to, well, just about everyone. That includes a total of 21 million military veterans and their spouses, along with the current slate of active duty, reserve, and National Guard members. The discount can slash thousands of dollars off the price of a new Buick, Chevrolet, or GMC vehicles, with Automotive News listing an $1,100 discount on the top gas-powered version of the Malibu, the Premiere. Those that want a bit more spice can get $1,700 off the price of a last-generation 2015 Camaro SS, while truck buyers will enjoy $3,000 off the Chevy Silverado All Star. That's just a start, though, since the military discount can be paired with other GM incentives. The discount doesn't apply to everything, though. Some are understandable – none of Cadillac's vehicles are included in the deal, nor is the Corvette Z06. You'll also be unable to apply the discount to a range of base-level trims, like the Chevy Cruze or Equinox L, the base Colorado, or the entry level GMC Acadia, Canyon, and Terrain. A full list is available at GM's dedicated military discount website. GM's expanded discount plan runs from today through May 31.
