BMW maintenance plan no longer transferrable to 2nd owner

One of the best innovations in car buying in recent years is the rise of no-cost scheduled maintenance programs. Many people feel really anxious about taking their car in for service, and these deals help mitigate that somewhat. Obviously, it's not free for automakers to implement the offers, and now BMW is altering the way its four-year, 50,000-mile Maintenance Program works for some owners. "To keep such an offer sustainable we had to make a change," said Kenn Sparks, Manager of Business Communications at BMW North America, to Autoblog via email.
The original person to buy or lease the model isn't going to see any difference, but the program is no longer transferable to a second owner, unless that person is in the owners household. Those people include includes parents, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren, in addition to someone like a spouse or children. The original owner just has to advise BMW of new user. "The program change will affect 2nd owners and for them BMW is introducing an optional full-maintenance product that covers the vehicle up to 100,000 miles," said Sparks. BMW recalling all 2000-06 3 Series models over airbags in US, 1.6M globally

We just can't seem to get away from recalls involving the faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata. There are already millions of vehicles in need of repair as a result of these ever-expanding campaigns, and BMW is adding another 1.6 million worldwide. The Bavarian automaker is issuing a recall for certain 3 Series models, including 574,000 of them in the US, to replace the passenger-side, front airbag inflator.
Specifically, the campaign covers 3 Series models from the 2000 through 2006 model years built between May 1999 and August 2006. "It's only the E46" generation of cars that are affected, which are now two model revisions old, according to BMW of North America spokesperson Matt Russell, speaking to Autoblog.
These models suffer the same problem as the rest of the vehicles with the faulty inflators. It's possible for the part to rupture during airbag deployment and possibly spray shrapnel at the occupant. However, according to BMW, the automaker isn't aware of any actual cases of this happening in any of its vehicles.

Are you the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe?

Thanks to Austrian website Autofilou (via Jalopnik), we now have our first look at what appears to be the upcoming BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe - the four-door version of the new 4 Series coupe, which itself is based on the 3 Series sedan. Makes total sense, right?
Nevertheless, in our First Drive of the 4 Series coupe, we found it to be a much more engaging experience than the 3 Series on which its based. And if this new 4GC follows in those footsteps, it could prove to be a better 3 Series sedan than, well, the 3 Series sedan.
Expect the 4 Series Gran Coupe to come in 428i and 435i flavors, with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four in the base car and a 3.0-liter turbo-six in the higher-end model. Of course, BMW will likely bring a range-topping M4 Gran Coupe to market not long thereafter.
