********** BMW X3 XDRIVE 28I **********

THE X3 EFFECTIVELY BLENDS UTILITY WITH SPORTY DYNAMICS AND ENOUGH LUXURY TO KEEP DRIVERS FROM FEELING AS IF “CROSSOVER” EQUALS COMPROMISE. THE TURBO FOUR IN THE XDRIVE28I CHURNS OUT 240 HP AND AMPLE TORQUE THROUGH ALL FOUR WHEELS VIA A STANDARD EIGHT-SPEED AUTOMATIC. SELECTABLE CHASSIS MODES IMPROVE AGILITY WITH MORE AGGRESSIVE THROTTLE MAPPING AND QUICKER STEERING. OPTIONS ARE PRICEY, BUT EVEN THE BASE X3 IS WELL EQUIPPED.
FORTUNATELY, THERE’S HARDLY A BETTER STARTING POINT THAN THE 3 SERIES SPORT-SEDAN, AND THE X3 REALLY PROVES THIS POINT. IT FEELS SOLID, YET SPRITELY AND FEELS FAR MORE CAPABLE THAN ITS SPEC SHEET WOULD HINT AT. FOR 2013 BMW TRANSPLANTED THE 240-HP TURBOCHARGED FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINE OUT OF THE 328I AND PUT IT INTO THE BIGGER UTILITY VEHICLE.

THE ENGINE IS STILL PACKAGED WITH BMW’S EIGHT-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION LIKE LAST YEAR’S MODEL, WHICH DOES DOUBLE DUTY TO HELP KEEP THE ENGINE IN ITS SWEET-SPOT AND FUEL-CONSUMPTION LOW. YES, THE OLDER CAR MADE MORE POWER, BUT THE NEW ENGINE HELPS MAKE MORE TWIST; A TOTAL 49 EXTRA LB-FT OF TORQUE HELPS THE X3 STAY EXCITING. IN FACT, IT’S HARD TO SEE THE NEED FOR THE MORE POWERFUL ENGINE IN THE XDRIVE35I.

BMW-Toyota joint sports car project is on like Donkey Kong

Mon, 30 Dec 2013

It's official - there will be a jointly developed sports car from BMW and Toyota. While the two auto giants signed a Memorandum of Understanding that pledged to pursue "joint development of architecture and components for a future sports vehicle" back in June of 2012, in the interim, it has remained unclear how those plans had been progressing. BMW has finally officially confirmed that the German and Japanese manufacturers will be codeveloping a pair of sports cars in addition to pursuing other disciplines including fuel cell systems and lightweight technologies.
"We have agreed on a joint architecture for a sports car. What is important is that there will be two different vehicles that are authentic to the two brands," BMW Development Chief Herbert Diess told Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Reuters is reporting. This is a very, very big step for both brands, but now the speculation can officially begin as to what the products of this agreement will look like.
There's ample reason to believe that the BMW-Toyota tie up will result in a Supra successor based on comments made by the chief engineer of the GT86/FR-S program, Tatsuya Tada, back in August. Follow that with a rumor from earlier this month that Toyota could debut a Supra concept car at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show later this month, and we could be seeing the fruits of this partnership sooner rather than later.

Jay Leno puts focus on some retro-inspired BMW bikes

Mon, 28 Jul 2014

Jay Leno puts eight wheels on display this week for Jay Leno's Garage from a quartet of retro-inspired BMW motorcycles. They are the creations of husband and wife team Larry and Carol Romestant, who build each one in their home garage.
Larry is a former aerospace engineer who loves BMW bikes, especially the K models. Now, he's combining his passion with a real talent for fabrication to build his own cycles with his wife. With Larry and Carol the only ones working on these projects, it takes them six to nine months to build each one. In addition to the old-school looks, the motorcycles are supposed to be a bit more user friendly than stock. For example, one of them ditches the standard five-speed gearbox in favor of a six-speed unit to be a little more comfy when cruising at high speeds.
Since there isn't enough time to take all four of them for a ride, Jay picks his favorite to test out on the open road. Scroll down to see which one he chooses.

BMW confirms new Mexican plant

Thu, 03 Jul 2014

After over a year of speculation, BMW is finally officially announcing that it's building a factory in Mexico. The new plant will cost the German automaker roughly $1 billion US and will have a capacity of about 150,000 vehicles a year when complete. However, production won't begin there until 2019.
The new factory is being built near the city of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, with plans to employ about 1,500 people. Unfortunately, BMW is still mum about which models it's producing south of the border. Earlier rumors indicated the possibility of the 3 Series, 1 Series and maybe even Mini models there.
BMW says Mexico's multiple free trade agreements are a major factor in the choice of location of the plant. They make it possible for the automaker to ship models more cheaply to North America, parts of South America and the European Union. "The Americas are among the most important growth markets for the BMW Group. We are continuing our strategy of 'production follows the market,'" said Harald Krueger, the board's head of production, in the company's official announcement.
