A review of the new for 2006 BMW M5 at the time puts together the follwing assesment of the cars ability to produce supercar performance in a 4 door sedan package. How does the M5 do it? Horsepower: 507 to be exact, generated by a silky-smooth 5.0-liter V-10 that loves to rev (redline is 8200 rpm) and, when combined with BMW's third-generation 7-speed sequential M gearbox (SMG), serves up instant acceleration with the flick of a steering-wheel-mounted paddle. Yet like the V-8-powered car it replaces, this fourth-generation M5 effortlessly blends sports-car performance with commuter-car comfort. Naturally, as the only sedan on earth to feature a V-10 and a 7-speed sequential transmission, much attention focuses on the M5's high-tech powertrain. As well it should because they work exceedingly well together. The 90-degree V-10 is a clean-sheet design, engineered specifically for this car (and the M6) and not based on any existing BMW powerplant, including the BMW Formula 1 engine. It's also normally aspirated, unlike the competing Audi RS 6 and Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG powerplants, meaning it generates power through high engine rpm and its 10 cylinders rather than turbos or superchargers. Accomplishing such output without forced induction is no small feat, requiring some sophisticated engineering, especially in a V-10 that revs so freely. Like the M3, the M5's engine employs individual throttle valves for each of its 10 cylinders. They're tied to an electronically controlled throttle-by-wire system that ensures immediate response and adjusts each throttle butterfly individually in as little as 120 milliseconds. This works in concert with BMW's bi-VANOS variable valve timing for seamless power delivery anywhere in the rev range. To cope with the extreme heat and combustion pressure associated with high-rpm loads, the crankcase utilizes a racing-derived bedplate design that integrates cast-iron inserts into the aluminum casing for improved stiffness. Also helping produce those 507 horses and 384 lb.-ft. of torque is enough computing power to put an M5 on the moon. The ECU alone contains three 32-bit processors that perform a staggering 200 million calculations per second, controlling anything and everything related to engine performance. This includes, among other things, the throttle valves, bi-VANOS, fuel mixture, emissions and spark. Plus it acts as the central portal for all information traveling between the engine and smaller control units managing systems like SMG, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), ABS and Electronic Damper Control (EDC). An added benefit of all this computerized wizardry is the console-mounted Power button, which serves up three settings: P400 for just 400 bhp, P500 for the M5's full 507 bhp or P500 Sport for 507 bhp accompanied by noticeably quicker throttle response. 2013 BMW R1200GS and HP4 duel at Circuito de Almeria
Wed, 05 Jun 2013The 2013 BMW HP4 is the track-ready version of the manufacturer's already mighty S1000RR, which puts the bike at the very tip top of the two-wheeled BMW food chain. The R1200GS, meanwhile, is intended to be a somewhat more utilitarian machine. Capable of conveying both rider and gear over vast distances and uncertain terrain, the big-boy GS is the Swiss army knife to the HP4's rapier. Or at least that's what we've always been led to believe. BMW recently rolled out some footage during a press launch that showed the R1200GS is actually no slouch when it comes time to sling around a road course.
The company threw both bikes on Spain's Circuito de Almeria for a little sparring match, and miraculously, the HP4 didn't just up and walk away from the R1200GS. From from it. Instead, the two stay tightly matched through most of the course before something surprising happens. We won't spoil the ending for you. Is it possible the rider on the HP4 still had some in reserve? Sure, but from the sound and look of things, neither bike was giving an inch. Check out all the video action below for yourself.
BMW i8 fully revealed ahead of Frankfurt debut
Tue, 10 Sep 2013It may be early in the morning here in the US, but in Germany, the first day of the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show is in full swing. BMW took advantage of the early start and showed off its long-awaited i8 plug-in hybrid sportscar, a two-plus-two, swan-wing-doored coupe, to the Frankfurt crowd.
We drove a BMW i8 prototype back in August, so many of the things we're reading today are clarifications on our initial suspicions or speculations. Underhood sits a 1.5-liter, turbocharged, three-cylinder engine. On its own, it churns out a respectable 231 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, which is then channeled to the rear wheels by way of a six-speed automatic transmission. An electric motor, meanwhile, sends 131 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque through a two-speed automatic to the front wheels.
With all-wheel drive at its disposal, the total system power sits at 362 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque, and allows the i8 to scamper to 62 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds. That excellent performance is offset by an estimated fuel economy figure of 94 miles per gallon, though, making this a fast and efficient vehicle. Charging is impressively fast on the i8, with a full charge coming from a 110-volt outlet in under four hours. A BMW Charging Station will trim the charge time down to 1.5 hours.
BMW suing Saab Automobile Parts for $3.2M
Fri, 24 Aug 2012Saab might be all but dead, but that's not stopping automakers that were once involved with the Swedish brand from attempting to reclaim losses. According to a Fox Business report, BMW has filed a 2.6 million Euro suit ($3.2 million USD) with a Swedish district court against Saab Automobile Parts for deliveries that went unpaid.
In 2012, Saab Automobile AB signed an agreement BMW that would see the German automaker deliver four-cylinder gas engines for its 9-3 range.
The suit also asserts that Saab ordered a large number of spare parts, and no payments were made to BMW. At the time, Saab was far from liquid, and filed for bankruptcy in December of last year.
