Alpine White over Black 1997 BMW M3 sedan. In short, I have babied this car for the several years I have owned it. It has been taken care of and been overly pampered. It lives in a garage, but it is driven. It does have 215k miles on the clock, but please read the list of rework below. It has been gone through...very completely. It is a 4 door sedan. Rare for en e36; BMW only produced them in 1997 and 1998. Yes, it is an automatic...but...it has a 3.91LSD diff not the stock 3.38LSD. This is quicker off the line than a stock diff 5 speed...feel free to do the math if you'd like. Sure top end is limited, but seriously...who does 150? I want this car to go to an enthusiast who will treat it right. I already have my other car. This car came from a Dr in SFO around 2005-ish and I know who the local owners have been. I do not know the Dr who was the original owner. I'm just going to provide a list of the mods the car has to keep it easy:

Suspension
- AST 4100 Coilover Suspension
- VM Front Camber Plates
- Rogue Engineering Front Strut Brace
- RTAB Limiters
- Alignment by Texas Track Works (ask Forest, he knows the quality of this car)
- 17x8.5 Kosei K1's Front and Rear (uber rare period wheel)
- Front H&R Wheel Spacers & H&R Extended Bolts

Engine
- Ferrea Valves (50k miles ago)
- Supertech Valve Springs and Ti Retainers (50k miles ago)
- ARP Head Studs (50k miles ago)
- Cometic Head Gasket (50k miles ago)
- DrVANOS Rebuilt Unit Installed (50k miles ago)
- RC Cleaned Injectors (50k miles ago)
- Stewart Water Pump (50k miles ago)
- Silicone Coolant Lines and Intake Tubes
- Custom (well done) Intake and Big K&N Cone
- New OE Oilpump w/Z3 Pick-up Mod and tack welded nut (last year)
- New OE Radiator (last year)
- New OE Coolant Overflow (last year)
- New Bosch Rebuilt Alternator (last year)
- ASC Delete (traction control, reversable)
- ABS Disabled (also reversable)
- NO Check Engine Lights are On!
- Motion Motorsports Front Aluminum Undertray

Body
- Never repainted that I can tell, all VIN tags are there
- No hail damage or anything funky
- Rear (body taped on) Lip Spoiler
- Fog Light Delete (wiring is still there if you must)
- HID 8000k with glass Depo Lenses
- LED License Lights to match hue of HIDs in Front
- I would sand and repaint the front bumper cover if I wasn't going to really drive the car

Interior
- Factory Black Leather
- As a '97, it does not have the ugly door panel airbags (plus in my book)
- It also does not have the '98MY rear headrests (another plus being a driver's car)
- Newer 3 Series Rearview Mirror with Security Beacon (wired and works)
- Lower driver bottom seat side bolster could stand to be recovered
- Headliner needs to be done (I was kicking Alcantara around...just didn't do it)
- Steering wheel is worn (A guy in Germany 'tanik' on eBay sells redone wheels for around $300, your option)
- The light in the clock portion of the OBC looks to have gone out. At an angle, you can see it works. This is only on the little clock part, the main OBC light is perfect.
- Floor mats, are fairly new and in good shape
- Alpine CD Head Unit with XM and iPhone cable in the console
- Hardwired for V1 Detector up by the Mirror
- CD Changer in Trunk (sounds like it works, actually never tried...I have an iPhone)
- Trunk, clean and it does hold things
- Full tool kit including Roadside card are in the trunk

INCLUDED With the Sale
- New A/C Compressor, Expansion Valve, and Dryer (not needed, but I keep extras in case the time comes)
- CV Rebuild Kits for all Four Joints
- Extra Head Gasket (OE style)
- Extra Valve Cover Gasket
- The Bentley Manual (the thick book)
- Misc bits of crap I have collected (clear lenses, spare parts, etc.)

What else? Hell it has even more stuff...this is long enough.

Here is video of the car idling: Copy and paste the link to the left for video

Video shows that there are no check engine lights or ECU codes being thrown. It is from a non-smoking household. The airbag light is on. Had it diagnosed at Autobahn BMW and was told there is some switch under the driver's seat causing this. Had considered switching to a euro wheel, so didn't have them fix it. As for why I'm selling...I have a commuter car, a truck, and a vintage race car. It was this or the vintage race car and the old Datsun won. Just really don't need 4 cars and it would be silly to keep funding that many.

If you are SERIOUS and you know what you are looking at, please contact me. It is rare and should be treated as such, as I did. These are going up in value like the e30 M3's have. Ask questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

BMW says SUVs killed the sports car market

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

In many ways, we're living in a golden age of automotive performance. After all, it's possible to show up at a Dodge dealer, hand over about $60,000 and storm away with a 707-horsepower Challenger Hellcat. Or for those who prefer a touch more luxury, the BMW M4, Mercedes-AMG C63 and latest Cadillac ATS-V offer between 425 and 503 horsepower, depending on your pick, with a bit more poshness. However, none of these powerful vehicles fit the classic definition of a two-place, droptop sports car, and according BMW head of sales Ian Robertson, that's because the segment is very much in the doldrums.
According to Robertson, two factors seriously wounded the classic sports car market. First, the global economic crisis of a few years ago put a serious hurt on sales, according to Bloomberg. Further worsening the situation, the boom in popularity of luxury SUVs and crossovers in the past few years hasn't allowed for much recovery. Even car-hungry China hasn't helped much because of the smog in many cities and preference among some of the very rich there to be chauffeured.
Combined, Audi TT, BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK sales peaked around 114,000 units a year in 2007, but they are only expected to reach 72,000 annually by the end of the decade. Robertson is pretty pessimistic about the market's comeback too. "Post-2008, it just collapsed. I'm not so sure it'll ever fully recover," he said to Bloomberg.

Meet the inventor of the BMW 3 Series wagon

Sat, 11 May 2013

It's hard to imagine, but once upon a time, there were only two BMW 3 Series variants: the coupe and sedan. Back before gran coupes, convertibles and yes, even touring models were available, buyers could only get their 3 Series fix if it came with two or four doors and a fixed roof. Back in the mid '80s, BMW engineer Max Reisbock was having some trouble fitting his whole family into his four door. Rather than suck it up and buy a van, he picked up a wrecked 3 Series and got to cutting in a buddy's garage. Months later, he had the very first 3 Series Touring ever built.
At first, he kept the the car to himself, using it to haul friends and family around, but he eventually showed it off to his friends at work. When the BMW executives found out about his project, they called him up to take a closer look. After putting an eyeball on the car, they took it, copied his design, made a few tweaks and quickly rolled out the first production 3 Series Touring. How's that for validation? Check out the video below for Reisbock's story.

Jay Leno puts focus on some retro-inspired BMW bikes

Mon, 28 Jul 2014

Jay Leno puts eight wheels on display this week for Jay Leno's Garage from a quartet of retro-inspired BMW motorcycles. They are the creations of husband and wife team Larry and Carol Romestant, who build each one in their home garage.
Larry is a former aerospace engineer who loves BMW bikes, especially the K models. Now, he's combining his passion with a real talent for fabrication to build his own cycles with his wife. With Larry and Carol the only ones working on these projects, it takes them six to nine months to build each one. In addition to the old-school looks, the motorcycles are supposed to be a bit more user friendly than stock. For example, one of them ditches the standard five-speed gearbox in favor of a six-speed unit to be a little more comfy when cruising at high speeds.
Since there isn't enough time to take all four of them for a ride, Jay picks his favorite to test out on the open road. Scroll down to see which one he chooses.
