1998 Bmw 740il Sedan 4.4l Project Car With Many Extras Updated With Pictures on 2040-cars

Year:1998 Mileage:125000
Location:

Columbus, Ohio, United States

Columbus, Ohio, United States

Great project car for the bimmer enthusiast.

Do you have a 740 project you need parts for?
Want to pick up a whole bunch of extras all at once?
Want a set of great wheels and some bonus parts to go with them?

Here you go.

The car was in fair running condition when it was parked last year.
I will not part the car out and won't separate any of the pieces, take it all or none. \
I will try to get into the Good, Bad, and Ugly about the car and it's extras.

The bad:
  • The car has approx. 125k miles, the DSC computer needs replaced, so the miles are not updating, so the car was parked. Since the DSC needs replaced, a few things aren't working quite right. Replace the DSC and all these things work right again.
  • The cruise control is out, the cable needs replaced.
  • Front suspension needs work and the tires need replaced.
  • Interior leather is in decent shape, no tears, rips etc, however normal wear for a car this mature. (includes a leather re-dye kit)
IMHO this would be a great parts car, it needs a little work if you wanted it running sweet again.

The good:

Before the car was parked, it was used for multiple, weekly long range commutes; almost all highway miles, to/from MI and KY (sales guy). I'd say the last 60k miles are all highway. I never had a problem on the road and car ran great.

This car has a lot of extras. Some are new or in very good used condition. Many are still wrapped in packaging and I'm not opening most of them. I will post pictures with the description and parts number for you. I DO have more pictures then I'm posting and if you need more pictures, I can take them. I was going to re-do this car myself but got a little sidetracked with another project. My loss, your gain.

Extras:

Set of 4 wheels; BMW Style 32, one is refinished, the others need to be. The one that's already been refinished is in "brilliant finish." *See updated pictures*

This is a "staggered" set, 18x8's front, 18x9's rear:

1 - 18x8 - Curb rash, flaking finish
1 - 18x8 - Curb rash, flaking finish
1 - 18x9 - Flaking finish.
1 - 18x9 - Reconditioned condition. Brilliant finish.

The reconditioned wheel ran ~$280, the others were ~$350 for the three, they are easily worth $500 as a set by themselves and go for that and more on here. There is at least one local place that's already looked at the wheels and are fairly confident they can refinish the 3 to match the one that's already refinished, and there is at least one online place that could as well (the place the reconditioned the one already).

IMHO, the Style 32's are one of the better looking wheels for the e38, and were an originally available wheel for the e38's so fit isn't an issue.

Includes a set of used, but good condition, 99-01 side members (rocker panels) in matching black. These run around $180 ea., I think I paid $300 for them on eBay. They are still in the wrapping from the eBay seller . They are in good used condition. *Updated with pictures.*

There is a used shadowline kit purchased off ebay. I think it's missing one or two pieces and some clips, but still in very usable condition for the DIY folks. I think it was about $200 on eBay. AS IS.

The headline is NOT sagging. This is unusual. There is one small smudge, otherwise the headliner is in great shape.

I have a leather re-dye kit, enough to redo the entire interior. The kit is made by Leatherique and is one of the better known leather treatments.

Many, MANY extra interior trim pieces, eg. the side plastic pieces for the drivers seat because the plastic around the seat controls is scratched up.

The drivers side door spring needs replaced, a new one is included, just needs installed.

The car was owned by a bimmer enthusiast, some well known and widely used DIY updates have been made, eg:
  • DIY chromelined headlights.
  • Retrofitted xenon headlights, 99-01 style, original headlights also with it.
  • Removed the cell phone cradle and replaced with OEM leather cover.
  • Updated with clear side markers, ambers still included
There are 'extras' I have missed. Have more questions? This is a huge lot and worth it. I know I can make more $$$$$ off parting it out, I just want it off my 'to-do' list.

If you have any more questions,or, want more pictures... CONTACT ME!

The pictures are considered part of the description, please review carefully. Please ask any questions you may have. All sales are final.

Please note, the car is for sale locally, I reserve the right to remove the listing in the event it is no longer available.

There have been a few questions, I'll post my answers in case others are interested:

Q: I am confused about the DSC computer not working and "other" things not working quite right. DOES the car run and drive fine as it is even though the miles aren't being added on?
A: The DSC controls a few different things, not only will the miles not update, but the power steering is heavy. If you do a google search on e38 and DSC you'll see it's not uncommon. It's about $150 for a used DSC, it's a simple replacement. The "other" things: there is also no speedometer and the ABS will be off. Replace the DSC, these things all work again. The car DOES drive even with the DSC not working, however since I didn't want a mileage disparity, I parked it. When you ask if the car drives fine; the car does drive, or did when I parked it. It has a pretty bad shudder in the front end, this is due to the tires and the front control arms etc. in the front suspension need replaced. This is really a mechanics special, while I'd like for it to get sold, I'd really think this is best suited for someone who has a 740 already and wants a parts car and the extras, or is looking for a project car.

Q: Are there ANY fluid leaks if so how much of what. Transmission perfectly fine?! A/C blow cold, heat hot, radio, all windows, sunroof and ALL seat positions work fine?
A: Transmission is fine, although 125k is about where everyone recommends doing a transmission service, new fluid etc., but I never had any transmission issues, no leaks etc. A/C is cold, heat is hot. Radio works, all windows and seats work. Or did when it was parked. There is a minor oil leak that I was trying to track down when I parked it. When I say minor, I mean I would find drips under the car after it had been parked...drips, not puddles.

Frankly, the car needs some work before I'd want to drive it every day, which is why I parked it. I'm not a mechanic, and don't have a garage and the car needs more attention than I can put into it. It was driven every day, many times for long range trips into MI, I never ended up on the side of the road. I based the price on; I've always been told a running car, or a car that can be running with a little work, is worth at least $1000, and all the extras I have are easily worth almost $1000 by themselves. Even in the condition they are in, those wheels in that style and size are worth at least $500 by themselves.

Q: any tune up performed recently or does it need new plugs, coils?
A: I performed a self tune up about a year before it was parked, new plugs, air filter, etc, but I'd assume you'd probably want to do that again as part of the project.

Q: What dummy lights are on while it's running?
A: Until the DSC went out, I wasn't getting errors other than a Code 32...this indicates an issue with the catalytic converters. No other error lights.

Q: Will it pass smo/emmissions test?
A: No idea. See the above about the cats. They probably need replaced.

Additional Commentary:
I need to sell the car; however when I parked it I estimated there's about $3-4k that would need to be put into the car to get it back to where I would want it; but that's using all heavy duty replacement parts, top of the line tires, getting the style 32 rims refinished etc., eg; the new heavy duty kit to replace the front end issues is about $800, tires would run about $1k, refinishing the rims would run about $450 and replacing the cats with the ones I would want would be about $1500, although you could replace them for much less than that, I'm just really, really picky about what I use for parts. It's just more than I have time for. This is why I think it's best as a parts car or project for a
mechanic with a garage or someone that wants to part it out. If you have the time, space, and mechanical inclination, you could have a really decent car for fairly cheap, but it is definitely a project car, and I don't want to mislead anyone about that. Car is sold as is.

Thank You!

BMW recalling nearly 570,000 1 Series, 3 Series and Z4 models over electrical issue

Mon, 18 Feb 2013

BMW is recalling roughly 570,000 vehicles in the United States and Canada due to faulty battery cable connectors that can fail, causing the engines in these cars to stall. Of the nearly 570,000 affected vehicles, just over 504,000 are here in the US.
The affected vehicles include 1 Series coupes and convertibles (both 128i and 135i) from the 2008 to 2011 model years; 3 Series sedans, coupes, convertibles and sport wagons (both 328i and 335i) from the 2007 to 2011 model years; and Z4 roadsters from the 2009 to 2011 model years.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "the connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time," which can eventually lead to a break in the electrical connection and a loss of power in the vehicle. If the car loses power, the engine can stall, which could possibly lead to a crash. The Detroit News reports that BMW knows of one minor collision in Canada as a result of this problem, but no injuries.

BMW 1 Series getting a small nose job

Tue, 06 Aug 2013

As BMW prepares to launch its new 2 Series lineup, it appears that the current 1 Series is going to get a little attention for itself. Based on these spy photos, the 1 Series hatchback (F20/F21), which is not offered in the US, will be getting a minor facelift in the near future.
From what we can see in these images, the updated 1 Series will definitely be getting a tweaked front end, with most of the attention focusing on the air intakes and grille. Our shooter tells us that it is possible that the headlights may yet be reworked in some way by the time we see this car in production form. It still isn't clear if we'll ever see this bodystyle or the next-gen 1 Series in the US, but our most recent report seems to indicate that the car's fortunes will depend somewhat on how well the Mercedes CLA-Class and Audi A3 sell.

Audi overtakes BMW as adulterers' favorite car brand

Fri, 14 Jun 2013

As Audi hopes to surpass BMW as the top-selling luxury automaker, sometimes it has to look at the small victories, too. For instance, IllicitEncounters.com - a UK dating site for married folks (also known as adultery) - is reporting that a recent poll shows that more people willing to cheat on their spouses drive an Audi. Last year, this same poll showed that BMW was the car-of-choice for adulterers.
With Audi on top (pun intended) and BMW bumped to number two, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Volkswagen round out the top five car brands owned by unfaithful wives and husbands. Check out the poll over at IllicitEncounters.com, but be sure to clear your browser history afterward. You know, just to make sure your spouse doesn't get the wrong idea about the websites you visit.
