Up for grabs is one very rare 1979 BMW 635CSi. This car is very rare and desirable because of it's unique body work and euro instrumentation. The European bumpers are very difficult to find and were not available in the US. The 635 model was not sold in the US for 1979 making this grey market import very rare. It has a very low 123k miles on it.

A little history about the car... I bought this car while it was in the midst of restoration. The original engine had failed and was being replaced with a very low mileage engine and 5-speed overdrive manual transmission from a wrecked late model 635. The engine is installed in the engine bay, but needs to be wired with it's included harness and computer. The transmission is not installed. This is basically the remaining work to be done to have a running, driving car. I have extensive documentation that came with the donor car stating the fantastic condition of the engine and transmission.

The body of the car is in surprisingly good condition with some minor rust in the usual places around the rear wheel wells. The euro cars always have an amount of rust, this one being one of the least rusty euro BMW's I have seen. The nose does have a dent, but a replacement piece in excellent condition is included, along with the very nice kidney grills. It is very solid overall. The doors open and close with that excellent feel one expects from BMW. Very tight and quiet. The wheels are very rare as well, I will not sell them separately.

The interior is in fair condition. The door panels are very nice as are the rear seats and carpet. The front seat leather is deteriorated but intact, the seats are solid with no degradation of the foam or structure. The headliner is excellent. The dash is cracked in the typical fashion of most 635 BMW's, replacement covers are readily available. The instrumentation is all euro, very unique and in great condition. The rear seats and panels are also very nice.

MANY extra parts are included with the car including but not limited to rear seats, rear center console with climate controls and beverage chiller (rare!), instrument cluster, various engine sensors and parts, wheels, E28 rear subframe with sway bar that will allow the use of larger brakes, and a wide variety of gearing options with the use of a later model differential. A 3.73 limited slip differential is included. Extra tail lights in excellent condition, grills, lenses, nose piece with kidney grills, short shifter, strut tower brace, and much more.

I am aware that this car could be parted out for a sum much greater than my asking price. The wheels, differential and bumpers alone could easily be sold for my asking price, but I would like to see this car go to someone who is willing to restore it. It is an amazing car that should remain on the road. I have seen the European bumpers sell in excess of half of my asking price alone. To the BMW enthusiasts out there, you will recognize the value in this car. Look up the cost of a strut tower brace for a 635 just to give you an idea of the parts value!

Please feel free to ask questions and request pictures. I am available to show the car most any time. I will be posting more pictures later today.

Thanks for looking!

Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo burns all the midnight oil

Wed, 11 Sep 2013

We've got good news and bad news for you, boys and girls, from the floor of the Frankfurt Motor Show. The good news is that the BMW M3 has come early, with a diesel, in wagon form - albeit with a different name. The bad news is that it will in all likelihood never make it to America. Which is a shame, because it's awesome.
What we're talking about, of course, is the new Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo. BMW's wickedly talented but lesser know stepchild has created a 3 Series with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo diesel six packing 345 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. You - and by "you," we mean overseas buyers - can choose between sedan or wagon, as well as rear- or all-wheel drive. But the bottom line is a 4.6-second 0-62 time and a 173-mph top speed... from a diesel.
We scoped out the rear-drive wagon Alpina brought to the show, decked out in its signature blue. And you can, too, in the gallery of live shots above, along with the freshly assembled stock photos of both sedan and wagon versions in the gallery below.

Xcar checks if BMW's i8 offers moves as electrifying as its looks

Sat, 02 Aug 2014

If you were to plot the general opinion about hybrids since their introduction among auto enthusiasts, the resulting graph would likely be shaped somewhat like a "V." In the beginning interest was high, simply due the novelty of these new powertrains, then the line would gradually fall as the models got the stereotype of being boring commuters. Today, though, things might be back on the upswing. Vehicles like the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and BMW i8 are showing that a hybrid doesn't have to be synonymous for dull. In its latest video, Xcar Films aims to find out if BMW's electrified sports coupe actually earns the brand's old moniker as the ultimate driving machine.
While the focus here is on what the i8 is like behind the wheel, one of the main highlights for the viewer is the interesting ways that Xcar shoots the BMW. It's not necessarily a beautiful vehicle, but seeing it in motion reveals all sorts of little intricacies that still photos don't pick up. For example, our eye catches the flying buttresses and little crevices scooped out of the corners when we get a look at the rear. It's just a fun car to look at.
With its 1.5-liter, turbocharged, three-cylinder engine and electric motor, the i8 positions itself as the future of automotive performance. But its intriguing looks and cutting-edge use of carbon fiber would be wasted if the coupe didn't drive well. We won't spoil the final verdict, though, you'll have to watch the video above.

BMW is the US auto industry's leading exporter

Fri, 18 Jul 2014

Which automaker do you think ships the most cars out of North America, one of the Detroit Three or perhaps one of the Japanese automakers? Nope. It turns out the BMW's Spartanburg, SC, factory is the biggest automotive exporter from the continent in the United States. According to a recent profile by Bloomberg looking at the plant's 20th anniversary, Bimmer's southern ops sends out more vehicles than all of Michigan combined.
When the Spartanburg factory opened up in 1994, its success was hardly assured, largely because of South Carolina's relatively small economy at the time. However, BMW picked the site because of its proximity to East Coast shipping that made it easier to move engines and transmission in from Germany and export vehicles back to Europe, according to Bloomberg. The Bavarians clearly made the right choice.
Today, the plant has developed into an absolute powerhouse. The factory currently assembles the X3, X4, X5 and X6 and exports about 70 percent of the vehicles built there. Things are only getting better. BMW is investing $1 billion through 2016 to boost annual production from the current 300,000 units up to 450,000 and to build a new flagship crossover called X7. The expansion also adds a further 800 jobs there to take total employment up to about 8,800. Including the latest financing, BMW has put over $7.3 billion into the factory since it opened, notes Bloomberg.
