1983 BMW 320i E21 TRANSPLANTED TO MASSACHUSETTS PRISTINE ORIGINAL CONDITION I AM AN HONEST EBAY BUYER AND SELLER AND A LONG TIME BMW ENTHUSIAST. I HAVE ALSO BEEN A LONG TIME MEMBER OF THE BIMMERFORUMS WEB SITE I HAVE OWNED MANY E21'S OVER THE YEARS BUT HAVE NEVER RUN ACROSS ONE AS CLEAN AND ORIGINAL AS "BINKY" (NAMED BY ORIGINAL WOMAN OWNER FROM GROVER BEACH,CA) IT WAS BROUGHT TO MASSACHUSETTS BY ME LAST YEAR. THIS CAR IS ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE. IT WAS BABIED BY ITS ORIGINAL OWNER FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS. THIS CAR WAS GARAGED IT'S ENTIRE LIFE. THE CAR WAS DELIVERED TO SANTA MARIA BMW ON 2/25/83 AND I HAVE EVERY RECEIPT AND REPAIR FROM 1983 UNTIL 2014 IN A NEAT FOLDER. A COLOR COPY OF THE ORIGINAL STICKER IS ON THE WINDOW (SEE PICTURE). THE ORIGINAL IS IN THE ORIGINAL FOLDER MARKED "BINKY" ORIGINAL SAPHIRE BLUE SINGLE STAGE METALLIC PAINT THAT SHINES LIKE IT JUST CAME OFF THE SHOWROOM FLOOR. ABSOLUTELY ZERO RUST. ALL BODY PANELS ARE ORIGINAL AND DAMAGE FREE. NO DENTS - NO DINGS (AND I MEAN NO DINGS) AT MOST JUST A FEW TINY STONE NICKS AND A FEW TINY SCRATCHES THAT WERE TOUCHED UP (TOUCH UP PAINT INCLUDED). THE ORIGINAL EXTERIOR IS AS CLOSE TO SHOWROOM QUALITY AS I HAVE EVER SEEN FOR A 1983 BMW. ALL RUBBER AND SEALS ON DOORS-TRUNK-HOOD ARE TIGHT. NO WATER LEAKS ANYWHERE. INTERIOR IS NEAR PERFECT. THE INTERIOR IS CLOTH AND NOT THE CHEAP BMW "LEATHERETTE" THAT WAS HORRIBLE. IT IS HARD TO SEE BUT THE MIDDLE SEAM OF DRIVERS SEAT BOTTOM HAS A LOOSE THREAD. THE REMAINDER OF THE INTERIOR IS PERFECT. NO RIPS-NO TEARS-NO CRACKS. THE HEADLINER IS BEAUTIFUL. THE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT (BEING 30+ YEARS OLD) IS WORN BUT I WILL NOT REPLACE IT. AS YOU CAN SEE I SWAPPED THE ORIGINAL STEERING WHEEL FOR ONE FROM AN S PACKAGE. I STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL STEERING WHEEL IN THE TRUNK. NOT ONE DASH CRACK FACTORY AIR CONDITIONING THAT BLOWS ICE COLD (NO SYSTEM LEAKS) ALL VENTS (HEATER , DEFROST AND FRESH AIR) WORK PERFECTLY WITH NO STICKING. HEATER AND DEFROST BLOW NICE AND HOT (SYSTEM RECENTLY FLUSHED WITH NO BLOCKAGE) SUNROOF OPERATES PERFECTLY IN BOTH FULL OPEN AND FRESH AIR POSITIONS. THE SUNROOF DRAINS ARE NOT CLOGGED AND DRAIN TO THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE ALL ELECTRICAL ITEMS FUNCTION PERFECTLY INCLUDING REAR DEFROSTER AND CIGARETTE LIGHTER (THAT I ONLY USE TO CHARGE MY CELL PHONE) THE RADIO AND CASSETTE WORK FINE - NOT THE GREATEST SOUND QUALITY BUT AGAIN, ALL ORIGINAL AND I HAVE NO INTENTION OF REPLACING. THE POWER ANTENNA SOMETIMES STICKS 1/2 WAY ON THE WAY UP BUT A QUICK ON/OFF RESOLVES THE ISSUE. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS A DEALER INSTALLED OPTION THAT IS NOT CURRENTLY OPERATIONAL. THE CAR STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL BMW GLOVE BOX FLASH LIGHT THAT STILL WORKS AND HOLDS A CHARGE. MECHANICALLY THE CAR RUNS BEAUTIFULLY. IDLES RIGHT AT 1100 RPM. THE 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION SHIFTS SMOOTHLY WITH NO OUT OF SINC ISSUES OR GRINDING. ABSOLUTELY NO FLUID LEAKS (AND I MEAN NO FLUID LEAKS OF ANY KIND) ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKE ON STRONG ACCELERATION AND ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKE ON DOWN HILL DECELERATION AND HARD BRAKING. Porsche 911 Turbo and Nissan GT-R Nismo star in World's Greatest Drag Race 4
Fri, 26 Sep 2014We love Motor Trend's annual World's Greatest Drag Race video. Now back for its fourth appearance, the idea of lining some of the world's fastest cars up for a ten-wide, straight-line, full-throttle run is, well... it's pretty freaking badass.
The lineup this year boasts some impressively fast cars to be sure. The group of ten includes the following darlings: Alfa Romeo 4C, BMW i8, BMW M4, Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, Ford Fiesta ST, Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, Nissan GT-R Nismo, Porsche 911 Turbo S, Subaru WRX STI and, last but not least, the Volkswagen GTI. Give us any one of those for the weekend, and we're happy to take the keys.
It must be said though, that for a publication that draws as much water as Motor Trend does, there are some big cars that we might expect to be here instead. The Lamborghini Huracán or Ferrari 458 Speciale would have added some exotic flare to the list, and the omissions of the Chevy Corvette Stingray (for the second year in a row) and the Dodge Challenger Hellcat are real head-scratchers.
BMW takes 30th Anniversary Edition M5 out to drift
Thu, 04 Sep 2014If you only look at the videos from BMW, it appears that the best way to celebrate the 30th birthday of the M5 is some smoky drifting, and it sure looks like a great way to mark the occasion to us. Now that the Bavarian brand's new 30th anniversary special edition is all set to hit the road, the most powerful M5 ever is getting it own chance to roast its tires on video, as well.
The M5 30th Anniversary Edition shouldn't have any problem hanging its rear end out, really. Under the hood, its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 is turned up to 600 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque and can allegedly sprint to 60 miles per hour in a scant 3.7 seconds. That's pretty impressive for any sports car but especially for a sedan that can still carry four passengers comfortably cosseted in leather and Alcantara upholstery.
BMW is making just 300 of these celebratory models worldwide, and appropriately for the anniversary, only 30 of them are going to be available in the US. If the special M5 doesn't make your heart race, the video basks in a little nostalgia, as well, by showing off the original model for some historical context.
BMW invests in carbon fiber for use beyond i and M models
Tue, 13 May 2014The immense amount of resources BMW has poured into its i brand program hasn't stopped, and recent developments indicate it's likely to pay off for BMW and BMW buyers outside the i brand. The i8 has already sold out its first year run, the i3 racked up 10,000 orders before it even went on sale and is already the subject of public discussion about being stretched into an i5, and a new investment in carbon fiber production has the automaker talking about CFRP use in non-i and non-M models.
BMW and SGL Group got together to form SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers (ACF), and the joint venture produces all of the CFRP for the i3 and i8 on two production lines at its plant in Moses Lake, Washington. After already investing $100 million to increase capacity, BMW has announced that another $200 million will add four more production lines, tripling production from 3,000 tons per year to 9,000 tons. When the expansion is complete in 2015, BMW says the Moses Lake facility will be the world's largest carbon fiber plant.
That's a lot of weave and the long view is that it will find its way into core models, with BMW exec Dr. Klaus Draeger saying, "As part of an intelligent mix of materials, we will apply carbon also beyond our BMW i and BMW M models in the future," and be able to do so "at competitive costs and in large quantities."
